Описание: On May 13, 1940, Winston Churchill stood before the House of Commons to deliver his first speech as Prime Minister. Europe was in crisis: Three days earlier, Germany had invaded France and the Low Countries. Facing only feeble resistance, Hitlers armies were rapidly sweeping westward. Accused of mishandling the war, Neville Chamberlains government collapsed, and Churchill was chosen to succeed him. Churchill had little support within the new government when he rose to address it on May 13. I have never believed in him, wrote one MP. Another described Churchill as a disaster. In fact, Churchill lacked confidence, both in himself and in his ability to lead his nation to victory, for he recognized far earlier than most the military genius of Adolph Hitler, and the potency of the German military. I hope it is not too late, Churchill had confided to his bodyguard on May 10. I am very much afraid that it is. In Blood, Toil, Tears and Sweat, the eminent historian and master storyteller John Lukacs recreates this pivotal moment in world history, and reveals Churchill as he has rarely been seen before: as a man both unsure of himself and deeply fearful of his nations defeat. Churchill made no promises to his country in his speech, because he knew he had none to make. And yet he rallied England onward in the face of a vicious enemy. For Churchill-and Churchill alone-understood what was at stake: the fate not only of nations, but of civilization itself.

Описание: Georg Lukacs stands as a towering figure in the areas of critical theory, literary criticism, aesthetics, ethical theory and the philosophy of Marxism and German Idealism. Yet, despite his influence throughout the twentieth century, his contributions to the humanities and theoretical social sciences are marked by neglect. What has been lost is a crucial thinker in the tradition of critical theory, but also, by extension, a crucial set of ideas that can be used to shed new light on the major problems of contemporary society. This book reconsiders Lukacs' intellectual contributions in the light of recent intellectual developments in political theory, aesthetics, ethical theory, and social and cultural theory. An international team of contributors contend that Lukacs' ideas and theoretical contributions have much to offer the theoretical paucity of the present. Ultimately the book reintegrates Lukacs as a central thinker, not only in the tradition of critical theory, but also as a major theorist and critic of modernity, of capitalism, and of new trends in political theory, cultural criticism and legal theory.

Описание:

Attila Richard Lukacs is one of the art world's most talented and controversial contemporary artists, best known for his epic paintings that depict masculine, homoerotic imagery, featuring figures such as gay skinheads and military cadets. His work has been exhibited at documenta in Kassel, Germany, as well as in New York, Paris, London, Berlin, and Cologne, among other cities.

A co-publication between Arsenal Pulp Press and three Canadian art galleries, this is the first book to document the work of this important artist, from an unusual perspective--a collection of some 1,200 full-color Polaroid images (twelve per page) taken by Lukacs over the past twenty years as core referents for his paintings, assembled and collaged by Vancouver artist and curator Michael Morris.

Lukacs regularly employs a Polaroid camera as part of his artistic process, using his friends and acquaintances as models; taking advantage of the Polaroid's unique characteristics, his painterly sensibility is evident in the rich hues and romantic sensuality of these photographs, which are strikingly similar to the paintings that resulted from them.

The book is physically enormous, allowing the Polaroid grids to be printed at their full size. It also features essays by award-winning author Michael Turner ("Hard Core Logo"); curator Scott Watson; gay writer Stan Persky; and Vince Aletti, the American curator and photography critic for "The New Yorker."

Stunning and bold, "Polaroids: Attila Richard Lukacs and Michael Morris" is a remarkable visual and written document on one of the most compelling visual artists working today.

Описание: The end of the Soviet period, the vast expansion in the power and influence of capital, and recent developments in social and aesthetic theory, have made the work of Hungarian Marxist philosopher and social critic Georg Lukacs more vital than ever. The very innovations in literary method that, during the 80s and 90s, marginalized him in the West have now made possible new readings of Lukacs, less in thrall to the positions taken by Lukacs himself on political and aesthetic matters. What these developments amount to, this book argues, is an opportunity to liberate Lukacs's thought from its formal and historical limitations, a possibility that was always inherent in Lukacs's own thinking about the paradoxes of form. This collection brings together recent work on Lukacs from the fields of Philosophy, Social and Political Thought, Literary and Cultural Studies. Against the odds, Lukacs's thought has survived: as a critique of late capitalism, as a guide to the contradictions of modernity, and as a model for a temperament that refuses all accommodation with the way things are.
