Описание: This volume presents a selection of 200 extraordinary images that reflect the central role played by the genre of the nude in the history of photography. Ever since the invention of photography in 1839 the nude has constituted a favorite subject among the practitioners of the medium. The development of photography in the first half of the 20th century ran in parallel to the evolution of the various creative movements in other artistic media: painting, sculpture and drawing. Dadaism, surrealism, futurism, constructivism and above all the Neue Sachlichkeit movement all found a congenial means of expression in photography that could be used alongside painting. In the second half of the 20th century, artists working with the medium of photography responded to the ever more insistent use of the nude in marketing, in advertising and in public life in general by adopting conceptual positions. Photographers sought, with growing intensity, to come up with new strategies: from the investigation and creation of the image itself to the use of blowups to produce pictures reminiscent of paintings and the combination of image and text: strategies that have led to an ever closer and more indissoluble interweaving of photography with painting and vice versa. Through numerous extraordinary examples the volume documents the historical and stylistic development of the nude from its origins with the first daguerreotypes to the provocative images of contemporary photographers from Nadar, Stieglitz, Man Ray and Weston to Arbus, Mapplethorpe, Araki and Goldin.
