Описание: This book proposes a way of understanding human movement and its forms of deterioration and preservation in older people. The author presents a method to diagnose motor problems, to implement effective both preventive and therapeutic measures, and to compare the results with those of other clinicians and health centres.  It is a conceptual and practical book at the same time. From the redefinition of the classic geriatric syndrome of Immobility, a concept of deep clinical interest is developed: Dysmobility. Moreover, a specially developed methodology is delivered to maximise the benefits for the patient, clinicians, and caregivers. Both the concepts and the methodology are discussed in a clear, precise, and practical manner to be applied in the daily clinical practice in Geriatrics. Dysmobility is defined in its three diagnostic axes, including the official updated version of D-STAGING (known as ETADI in Spanish), the motor continuum staging that revolutionised the clinic with its advent. Additionally, the requirements and criteria necessary for its correct application and use are explained conceptually step by step, and practically with clinical cases. Along with this, the new possibilities that arise from this conceptualisation and methodology are addressed, particularly in the field of comparative medicine and clinical research. Finally, the bases of a new theory of aging, the Movement-Time theory or theory of Dysmobility, are presented. This work will support physicians from different medical specialties, such as geriatricians, physiatrists, family doctors, geriatric dentists, and health professionals from the interdisciplinary team like gerontologists, nurses, kinesiologists/physiotherapists, psychologists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, nutritionists and social workers. It will also be of interest to students of health-related professions, resident physicians for different specialties, and researchers in mobility and rehabilitation.
Дополнительное описание: 1. Human movement What is it.- 2. The Great Geriatric Syndromes and The Immobility Syndrome.- 3. Reconceptualisation of Immobility Dysmobility.- 4. Diagnosis of Dysmobility.- 5. Concepts of D-Staging and stability.- 6. Application of the Triaxial Method.-

Описание: This book offers a concise and updated guide for all readers (physicians and non-physicians) interested in gaining a comprehensive and precise understanding of sarcopenia. Over the last several years, sarcopenia has increasingly developed from being a concept known only in research settings to one that is commonly explored in journals and scientific meetings for various disciplines, such as geriatrics, rheumatology and rehabilitation medicine. Thus, all domains of sarcopenia, from molecular aspects to clinical management, represent highly active areas of research and clinical practice for health professionals in a variety of fields, including geriatric medicine, nutrition, and epidemiology.

Despite being a relatively new concept in medicine, sarcopenia is increasingly being recognized as an important determinant of other health conditions, including mortality and disability. This book, written by experts from around the globe, covers several core aspects of sarcopenia management, from molecular mechanisms to genetics, epidemiology, diagnosis and finally treatment, including the clinical impact of sarcopenia as a risk factor, the known genetic and molecular aspects that can aid in predicting sarcopenia, and selected treatment and therapy concepts, including indications for nutrition and physical exercise. Sharing data from the latest studies, it will be of considerable interest not only for geriatricians, but also for a wide range of other readers.

Описание:

In recent years, a tremendous amount of effort has been focused on better understanding the fundamentals of Alzheimer's disease (AD) to facilitate early and accurate diagnosis and appropriately targeted therapeutic treatments. Alzheimer's Disease: Targets for New Clinical, Diagnostic, and Therapeutic Strategies provides a detailed synopsis of the current state of the art of diagnostics and therapeutics and identifies emerging technologies and molecules that show promise in the management and treatment of AD.

With contributions from experts drawn from academia, clinical practice, and the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries, the book explores:

  • The basis of AD and the role of Aβ oligomers in development of disease
  • Existing and emerging in vitro biomarker-based methodologies for the diagnosis of AD, focusing on genetic, biochemical, and conformational strategies
  • In vivo imaging diagnostic approaches
  • Evolving diagnostic criteria, health regulatory guidelines, biomarkers in clinical trials, and available and emerging therapies
  • Recent progress in small-molecule disease-modifier drug discovery efforts for AD, specifically in the areas of Aβ, tau, and emerging neuroprotective/neurorepair approaches
  • How a case study of AD raises issues regarding clinical and pathologic criteria, risk factors, and the amyloid hypothesis
  • The molecular conformational factors that govern the pathogenicity of aggregating proteins, and how these factors could represent new targets for disease-modifying therapies
  • The latest epidemiological, pathological, biochemical, and behavioral studies that may shed some light on the risk of developing AD and similar dementias after traumatic brain injury

Examining current hypotheses and suggesting possible new approaches to therapeutic clinical applications, this volume paves the way for a robust pipeline of therapeutics to combat not only AD, but a whole host of other neurodegenerative diseases.

Описание: This book presents a collection of articles on various aspects of current research on aging. These include model systems, cellular, biochemical and molecular aspects of experimental aging research, as well as selected intervention studies on age-related diseases.Aging is a global challenge to human society. Children are always in a hurry to become adults, while adults produce offspring and add to the gene pool. However, after adulthood or the attainment of reproductive maturity, all physiological parameters of the living organism start to undergo the aging process. Old age sets in slowly but surely, and usually continues for a prolonged period. If vigor and vitality are the main advantages of adulthood, old age offers the rewards of experience and maturity.Biologists ask questions such as: Why do we age? How do we become old? Is it possible to slow down, postpone or even prevent aging? In turn, medical experts ask: What are the diseases associated with old age? Are there medicines that can help affected elderly patients? In fact both groups are asking themselves how can we add more health to old age.Healthy aging is the dream of every individual. But to achieve this, it is fundamental that we first understand the cellular, biochemical and molecular basis of the aging process in mammalian cells, tissues and intact living organisms, which can serve as experimental model systems in Biomedical Gerontology. Once the biology of aging is understood at the genetic and molecular levels, interventional approaches to aging and its associated diseases may be easier to plan and implement at the preclinical level.

Описание: The book Sides of the Same Coin is the true story of a one-time social service worker, who lost employment and moved into his mother`s home to help care for her amidst mental deterioration and aging. After a major disagreement between siblings, this once-proud worker, who had serviced clients within all walks of the social service realm, was unceremoniously evicted by people who had relied upon his help countless times in their journeys through adult life. Such assistance was even given to their children more times than imaginable. It was during these times, that this worker was unceremoniously told he was no longer welcome in his mother`s home anymore, and since he assisted clients with their housing needs, he could use his knowledge to find suitable housing for himself. That worker was me. This was the start of a venture I never thought I would ever face. I too was appalled at the little assistance other clients received in the shelter system. This will only become worse due to the pandemic. And for the multitude of those who have fallen behind in rent payments, I believe it will only be a matter of time before the courts evict countless such individuals, and give them no choice but to seek false help from the public shelter systems. Read this book and learn what you never expected to see, face or have to experience in your lifetime. The only suitable name for the New York Shelter System is a living hell.

Описание: There is a growing need for a book on emergency general surgery in the elderly, as adults age 65 and older are the fastest growing segment of the population worldwide, and their number is expected to double to 89 million between now and 2050. Based on these changing demographics, it is expected that there will be a concurrent rise in the demand for a variety of surgical services, including vascular surgery (with a projected growth of 31%) and general surgery (with a projected growth of 18%), as well as in all sub-disciplines of surgery (thoracic, cardiac, oncology, hepatobiliary, transplant, plastic colorectal, orthopedic, gynecologic, urology and neurosurgery). In addition, older surgical patients often require a different level of care than younger patients during the preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative phases. Many of our geriatric population have multiple chronic illnesses beyond the one for which surgery is required, and therefore are prone to developing postoperative complications, functional decline, loss of independence, and other undesirable outcomes. In response, this book offers surgeons, geriatrists and nurses state-of-the-art surgical approaches and essential information on the complex perioperative care of the elderly.

Описание: This book is designed to present the clinical geriatric trends within general internal medicine and family practice, which practitioners often encounter in caring for their older adult patients. Chapters focus on increasingly difficult clinical decisions that practitioners have to make in caring for older adults, who often experience medical complications due to memory loss, physical disability, and multiple chronic conditions. Written by experts in geriatric medicine, each of these chapters start with the most up-to-date clinical geriatric research and provide specific examples or case studies on how to use this information to address the clinical needs of older adult patients. In addition, there is a set of concise “take-home points” for each chapter that are easy to commit to memory and implement in clinical care of aging patients. As the only book to focus on current trends in geriatric research and evidence-based eldercare practice, Clinical Trends in Geriatric Medicine is of great value to internists, family practitioners, geriatricians, nurses, and physician assistants who care for older adults.
