Islamic societies of the past have often been characterized as urban, with rural and other extra-urban landscapes cast in a lesser or supporting role in the studies of Islamic history and archaeology. Yet throughout history, the countryside was frequently an engine of economic activity, the setting for agricultural and technological innovation, and its inhabitants were frequently agents of social and political change. The Islamic city is increasingly viewed in the context of long and complex processes of urban development. Archaeological evidence calls for an equally nuanced reading of shifting cultural and religious practices in rural areas after the middle of the seventh century. Landscapes of the Islamic World presents new work by twelve authors on the archaeology, history, and ethnography of the Islamic world in the Middle East, the Arabian Peninsula, and Central Asia. The collection looks beyond the city to engage with the predominantly rural and pastoral character of premodern Islamic society. Editors Stephen McPhillips and Paul D. Wordsworth group the essays into four thematic sections: harnessing and living with water; agriculture, pastoralism, and rural subsistence; commerce, production, and the rural economy; and movement and memory in the rural landscape. Drawing out a range of sites at which representation and experience interact, Weston's argument is twofold: first, interaction between traditions of landscape writing and direct experience of landscapes are mutually influential; and second, writers increasingly deploy style, form, and descriptive aesthetics to recover the experience of place in the poetics of the text itself. As Weston shows, emergent landscape writing shuttles across generic boundaries, reflecting the fact that the landscapes traversed are built out of a combination of real and imaginary sources.

In The Chinese Atlantic, Sean Metzger breaks new ground in the study of the global exchange of culture across the Atlantic, exploring how the seascape is portrayed in theater, film, and installation art that explores the Chinese experience of migration. Metzger traces the flow of money, art, and culture through traditional trade routes and shows how Chinese migrants' arrival by boat influenced the communities they met and the communities they formed. With a particular focus on the Caribbean, Metzger demonstrates how this flow had a direct impact on the artistic culture of the communities which found themselves as the recipients of these waves of Chinese migrants and entrepreneurs. He interrogates central issues in the study of similar migrations from Africa and Ireland and encourages us to see that the Chinese played a similarly significant part in the shaping of globalization as we experience it today. Analyzing art that interacts directly with the sites in which it is located, Metzger explores how Chinese migrant laborers did the same to shape--both physically and culturally--the new communities in which they found themselves.
