Описание: Brideshead Revisited is Evelyn Waugh's stunning novel of duty and desire set amongst the decadent, faded glory of the English aristocracy in the run-up to the Second World War. The most nostalgic and reflective of Evelyn Waugh's novels, Brideshead Revisited looks back to the golden age before the Second World War. It tells the story of Charles Ryder's infatuation with the Marchmains and the rapidly disappearing world of privilege they inhabit.
Enchanted first by Sebastian Flyte at Oxford, then by his doomed Catholic family, in particular his remote sister, Julia, Charles comes finally to recognise his spiritual and social distance from them. Evelyn Waugh (1903-66) was born in Hampstead, second son of Arthur Waugh, publisher and literary critic, and brother of Alec Waugh, the popular novelist. In 1928 he published his first work, a life of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and his first novel, Decline and Fall, which was soon followed by Vile Bodies (1930), A Handful of Dust (1934) and Scoop (1938).
In 1939 he was commissioned in the Royal Marines and later transferred to the Royal Horse Guards, serving in the Middle East and in Yugoslavia. In 1942 he published Put Out More Flags and then in 1945 Brideshead Revisited. Men at Arms (1952) was the first volume of 'The Sword of Honour' trilogy, and won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize; the other volumes, Officers and Gentlemen and Unconditional Surrender, followed in 1955 and 1961.

Описание: "Only sixty candidates were to be selected from more than fifty thousand boys who had written the Qualifying examination. One hundred and twenty candidates who got the highest marks in the examination would be called for interview in Bombay out of which sixty unfortunate boys would have to return home. Two seats were booked for boys from Ceylon - Sri Lanka. Our state of Travancore - Cochin of those days, later named Kerala, had a quota of six cadets". In 1957, author Augustine Varghese was one of those boys chosen for a career in the Indian Merchant Marine. His life from the time of getting selected on the merchant training ship Dufferin covers his life through the ranks from apprenticeship as officer cadet, to getting certificates of competency, passing the final master (Foreign going) Certificate, working on merchant ships as junior officer, senior officer, and finally as master (captain). The ship Dufferin was named in honour of Lord Dufferin, who had been a highly respected viceroy of the British Government to India. After being chosen from those fifty thousand applicants so many years ago, the author says, "It was almost miraculous that I stepped on that ship." Here then is his exciting story of his life spent at sea.

Sally Tompkins was a very wealthy young woman who was a nurse that owned and ran her own private hospital in Richmond, Virginia during the American Civil War. The hospital had the highest survival rate of any hospital north or south. This statistic was even more remarkable considering that the worst cases were sent to her. She was also commissioned as Captain in the Confederate Cavalry because, by law, all hospitals had to be under military rule to be able to receive medical supplies. She took her rank seriously. She was adored by the Confederate troops and received probably hundreds of marriage proposals, all of which she declined. It was said that "her strength of mind and character took the place of more frivolous charms." Capt. Sally Tompkins demonstrated that women were capable of doing so many things that, in this time period, women were thought incapable of doing. As a hospital administrator, she challenged gender expectations and helped to expand the role of women in all management positions.

Capt. Charley's second novel examines life at sea through the eyes of his crew Capt. Louis Gladding and his cockpit ace, Crafty. With his nearly fifty years as a professional tournament and charter fishing mate and captain, the author will take the reader throught the intrigue of an unfinished piracy at sea. The story now moves into Florida's battle cry for clean water and more transparent, improved environmental protections. Decades of suspect state and federal water management practices have been wreaking havoc and destruction on virtually all of the states waters; fresh, brackish and salt.
WATER WARS is a story of an unresolved piracy off the shores of Cuba and an evil plot only partially achieved. It is a perspective of how politicians, land owners and developers have relied on greed and backdoor politics to amass incredible power and wealth at the expense of its citizens.
