FLYING
There's a scene in Peter Pan where Peter teaches the kids to fly. And the way he does it is, he tells them to think their happiest thoughts. And they do it, and they just start flying. I mean, it tells you right in the book how to do it So I thought - if they can fly, I bet I can too. So I just started thinking about all the things that made me the happiest. Like the day we picked up my new dog, Rex, from the kennel. And the day I beat my dad at chess - which is also known in my house as the day my dad let me beat him at chess. Or the time my sister gave me a birthday present, when it wasn't even my birthday. Or when my mom says she loves me. And by the time I was finished, even though I was still lying in my bed, I was flying so high I thought I'd never touch the ground again. And I could look down and see everyone and everything in my life and they were all looking up and smiling and waving back at me . . . I don't know if there really is a Peter Pan or an island filled with lost boys and pirates and Indians, but it doesn't matter. Because I know one thing for sure . . . I know how to fly.
PAIL OF WATER
(Your character is either Jack or Jill from the well-known nursery rhyme.)
You make one mistake and people never forget it. Seriously. I mean, yeah, Jack or Jill] and me went up the hill to fetch a pail of water. And, yes, one of us fell down and broke his crown and yeah, yeah, the other one came tumbling after. And no - we did not bring back any water. We did not succeed in our mission. And, if I was to be totally honest, we also lost the bucket. But come on. It wasn't like we went up the hill to save the planet from an alien invasion. There wasn't a baby up there about to be eaten by a bear. It was water. We fell down. We didn't come back with a pail of water. Someone else got up out of their chair, got a bucket, climbed up the hill and fetched a pail of water. Big deal. Life will go on. And just to set the record straight, I am perfectly capable of fetching water. I personally have fetched hundreds of pails of water, both before that incident and after. So has Jack or Jill]. It was one time. Sheesh. Maybe it's time we all moved on.
Автор: Mary E. Weems Название: Blackeyed: Plays and Monologues ISBN: 9462099162 ISBN-13(EAN): 9789462099166 Издательство: Brill Рейтинг: Цена: 119540.00 T Наличие на складе: Невозможна поставка. Описание: Winner! Emerging Artist Award (Literature) from the 2015 Cleveland Arts Prize (May 2015) Blackeyed is a collection of plays and monologues. The topics covered in the book include housing and foreclosure, suicide, assault, mental health, the Black male experience, and more. The book intersects with critical race theory because the majority of this work positions race at the center of the experiences of the fictional or fictionalized characters. Embedded in these chapters are the interweaving of personal and ancestral stories, news reports, informal conversations, observations, interviews, and online research expressed in language unapologetically Black, critical, reflexive, and proud. Blackeyed can be used as a class text in theatre, education, creative writing, communication, women’s studies, sociology, and African American studies undergraduate and graduate courses. It can also be used by theatre practitioners, including actors and directors, working in community, regional and national theatre settings. Individuals including qualitative researchers interested in exploring more affective possibilities or arts-based researchers can also read this collection as an example of methodological exemplar. Finally, anyone interested in the Black experience as well as the specific topics covered in this book can read this collection of plays as one might read a collection of short stories. "Weems’ resonant poetic voice shines through the characters in bursts of dialect and nuance. Human conflict, racial undertones and the struggle for civil and human rights reverberate. If one were to attempt to connect with a glimpse of the lives of African Americans in this country absent from classroom history books and the limited cinematic mainstream depictions, Blackeyed is perfect starting point. In all of its admitted “messiness”, it provides context, perspective, form and substance. Through it all, the spirit of cultural authenticity is woven through the fabric of these narratives, perhaps unbeknownst to its author, connecting the DNA of the ancestors who planted the seeds of exposition in a griot long before her awareness of their existence. In the Now, they are undoubtedly marveling at the flower that blooms much to the delight of those exposed to its hauntingly tragic beauty." -- Vince Robinson “Dr. Mary Weems exhibits her best writing through monologic and poetic forms in this intriguing collection of short dramatic works about African American experiences. Multiple voices showcase their characters’ struggles, humor, and triumphs through realistic and expressionistic modes. You don’t just “read” her dialogue; you hear it on the page. Weems’ writing styles are fluid, haunting, angry, poignant, and arresting. This is exciting theatrical work by one of qualitative inquiry’s most notable and important voices.” – Johnny Saldana, Professor Emeritus, Arizona State University, Author of Ethnotheatre: Research from Page to Stage “Mary Weems exemplifies literary arts-based inquiry practice in her new collection of plays, monologues and poems on the Black experience. She mines memory, history and auto/ethnography to craft pieces that are equal parts affective and effective. Affective in terms of their emotional impact and as acts of deep empathy. Effective in the ongoing struggle for social justice, equality and freedom. Weems shows us what risk-taking looks like in creative analytic practice: herwork embodies what Jonathan Lear calls “radical hope” as she insistson an ethical and caring stance in the face of cultural devastation. Read and learn.” – Monica Prendergast, University of Victoria, CoEditor, Poetic Inquiry: Vibrant Voices in the Social Sciences “In this rare and precious work, Mary Weems takes the reader into the lives of myriad human, abstract and material others, who capture our attention and imagination, pulling us into their personal-political worlds. We feel their breath and their blood, their passions and their longings; we know their disappointments, their anger, their love. Weems’s writing does this for us. Tackling urgent social and political issues through/with finely-wrought characters, Weems’ book, in its power and its craft, leaves us changed. Something shifts.” – Jonathan Wyatt, The University of Edinburgh, Author of Always in thresholds, Departures in Critical Qualitative Research, 3, 1, 8-17 “It was fantastic, powerful, and intellectually rich. I love the way it connected disciplines; humanities, social sciences. It was a very liberal arts performance with a multidisciplinary perspective.” -- Denison University President Adam Weinberg, on Dr Mary Weems' performance of Black Notes at the DU campus on Martin Luther King Day 2016. (Black Notes is Dr Weems' one-woman play, which features several excerpts from her book Blackeyed).

The Angina Monologues speeds from the transporting of a donor's heart up the motorway hard shoulder, to cautionary stories of excessive intervention gone awry in US hospitals, to a traumatic trip to bring advanced cardiac surgery to the Palestinian West Bank. Nashef tells heart-stopping stories of transplants, coronary artery bypasses, aorta repair, and cardiac arrest. He also delivers humane advice about medical realities rarely observed: the futility of obsessing over diet, the necessity of calculating risks, the role of decision making, the resilience of doctor and patient alike, and the threadbare brilliance of the NHS.
Nashef is a magnificently warm and likeable doctor and writer; and he has the best imaginable bedside manner.

Описание: This unique book of 100 monologues invites elementary school students to explore a wide range of emotions, developing empathy as well as acting skills. Divided into three sections, each part utilises a different technique to help children learn more about feelings. Part I contains 20 monologues that each have two contrasting scenarios which alter the feel of the selection (eg: You just learned your family is moving out of state. Are you excited or sad?). Part II has 30 pairs of monologues that present the same situation from different points of view (eg: You are insulted that you and your younger sister have the same bedtime. Your sister is glad that the two of you are treated equally). Part III includes 20 monologues that provide situations without identifying emotions in order to encourage discussion (eg: Your mum finally made it to one of your baseball games, but you hit a foul ball through her windscreen). All the monologues in this exciting collection are between one and two minutes long, and a comprehensive list of emotions in the appendix will help kids better clarify their own feelings and empathise with others. Most of the selections are gender neutral, with the rest divided evenly between boys and girls. Elementary-aged students will enjoy the many pieces from their own perspective and will be challenged by others from an older or younger point of view. Not just for the young actor, this book can help any child build stronger relationships with their peers, parents, siblings, and teachers.
