It examines how the Arab cultural left has offered a critique of the signifying practices of political hegemonies in the region and argues that though creative expression as constituted in the very language of the Arab uprisings, it has put forward its own alternativesUsing a wide array of texts and sources, both Arab and non-Arab, the opening chapters of the book identify how ethical and radical values pertaining to sociality are co-opted by political leaders in the Middle East and turned into jargon. Later chapters outline resistance to this co-option through a poetics of inter-subjectivity that takes structures of feeling into account, ranging from disappointment, despair and distrust, to dignity, solidarity and reconfigured senses of the sacred. In showing how psychological and affective states relate to signifying practices, the book offers an original conceptual framework for differentiating ‘radicalization’ from the creative radicalism of the Arab avant-garde.

This book is based on fieldwork on Islamists in eight Middle Eastern countries: Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Morocco, Yemen, Jordan, Kuwait and Syria. The contributors trace the transformation of the Islamists' ideology, behaviour, and strategy since the beginning of the Arab Spring. The aim of the book is to show that Islamists necessarily have an interactive and dialectical relationship with the environments in which they find themselves, and that their behaviour and political calculations are based on a wide range of local, regional and global factors. They take into account the impact of the different contexts the groups found themselves in from authoritarian to open and reformist, and contexts of armed conflict and civil war.

An interdisciplinary project, the book captures the ongoing transformation of Islamist parties to explain the reasons why some movements could adapt and make shifts in their discourse and strategy, maintaining organizational coherence and unity, while others fell short and suffered major splits and schisms. The robust theoretical findings update existing literature on Islamism and advance the state of the field.

Описание: Movement discourses construct an analysis of society, critique the power relations that exist, and offer an alternative vision for the population whom the movement promises to liberate. This book examines the resistance discourses within the Moro and Cordillera armed movements in the Philippines. The Moro and Cordillera identity entrepreneurs’ narratives are basically narratives of difference from the Filipino majority population that have been framed around the “Moro” and “Cordillera” identity markers. However, within and among the movement organisations, they differed in articulating the elements of these identities and the bases of their claims to recover homeland, ancestral domain, and autonomy.The book traces the evolution of these organizations in the 1970s to 1990s and how they built on their respective resistance discourses over time, manifesting significant intertextuality in the case of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, which broke away from the Moro National Liberation Front; and a drift to heightened ethnonationalism in the case of the Cordillera Peoples’ Liberation Army, compared to its mother organisation, the national democratic Cordillera People’s Democratic Front. The book reflects on where these mobilisations are now, and the strands of discourses that have remained salient or reemerged in the current decade.
