Описание: Book by Samuel Johnson, published in 1775. The Journey was the result of a three-month trip to Scotland that Johnson took with James Boswell in 1773. It contains Johnson's descriptions of the customs, religion, education, trade, and agriculture of a society that was new to him.
The account in Boswell's diary, published after Johnson's death as The Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides, with Samuel Johnson, LL.D. (1785), offers an intimate personal record of Johnson's behavior and conversation during the trip.
Critically examines influential novels in English by eminent black female writers
Studying these writers' key engagements with nationalism, race and gender during apartheid and the transition to democracy, Barbara Boswell traces the ways in which black women's fiction criticality interrogates narrow ideas of nationalism. She examines who is included and excluded, while producing alternative visions for a more just South African society. This is an erudite analysis of ten well-known South African writers, spanning the apartheid and post-apartheid era: Miriam Tlali, Lauretta Ngcobo, Farida Karodia, Agnes Sam, Sindiwe Magona, Zo Wicomb, Rayda Jacobs, Yvette Christians , Kagiso Lesego Molope, and Zukiswa Wanner. Boswell argues that black women's fiction could and should be read as a subversive site of knowledge production in a setting, which, for centuries, denied black women's voices and intellects. Reading their fiction as theory, for the first time these writers' works are placed in sustained conversation with each other, producing an arc of feminist criticism that speaks forcefully back to the abuse of a racist, white-dominated, patriarchal power.

Описание: Excerpt from Detailed Report of the Inspector of Insurance and Registrar of Friendly Societies: Transactions for the Year 1911 C. Registered Friendly Societies: being Societies registered by the Province of Ontario, for the transaction of insurance therein. Of these divisions, the Companies comprised in Division B (provincial Licensees) are-alone inspected by the Province, and are here reported on in the usual form and with the usual financial details pursuant to the provisions of the Ontario Insurance Act. All of the Companies in Division A, except Ocean Marine Companies, make financial statements annually to the Dominion of Canada; and those statements, as revised by the Dominion Superintendent, can be found in the Superintendent's Annual Report. The balance sheets, therefore, printed here, under Division A, are limited to those of Ocean Marine Companies. The report upon Division C. (friendly Societies) made on the 26th of January, 1893, related to their mode and place of incorporation; the statutes and instruments under which the Societies were constituted, and those by which they are now governed; the kind of insurance or insurance benefits undertaken; that report also showed inter alia whether or not the certificate holders generally are secured by a surplus fund; and, if a surplus, fund is maintained, whether any of this surplus is held in Ontario, if anyhow much, how invested, and by whom held and controlled. In recent decades, a small but growing number of historians have dedicated their tireless attention to analyzing the role of women in Texas history. Each contribution--and there have been many--represents a brick in the wall of new Texas history. From early Native societies to astronauts, Women in Texas History assembles those bricks into a carefully crafted structure as the first book to cover the full scope of Texas women's history.
By emphasizing the differences between race and ethnicity, Angela Boswell uses three broad themes to tie together the narrative of women in Texas history. First, the physical and geographic challenges of Texas as a place significantly affected women's lives, from the struggles of isolated frontier farming to the opportunities and problems of increased urbanization. Second, the changing landscape of legal and political power continued to shape women's lives and opportunities, from the ballot box to the courthouse and beyond. Finally, Boswell demonstrates the powerful influence of social and cultural forces on the identity, agency, and everyday life of women in Texas. In challenging male-dominated legal and political systems, Texan women shaped (and were shaped by) class, religion, community organizations, literary and artistic endeavors, and more.
Women in Texas History is the first book to narrate the entire span of Texas women's history and marks a major achievement in telling the full story of the Lone Star State. Historians and general readers alike will find this book an informative and enjoyable read for anyone interested in the history of Texas or the history of women.

A young boy's body is found in his cell at the St. Aloysius Gonzaga Youth Home located in a small town in Texas in 1953. Dana Greer, private investigator under contract by the Catholic Church, is brought in to solve the case. While attempting to find the murderer, Dana realizes nothing is as it appears: the prison, run by a group of abusive Franciscan brothers, is a circus of horrors; the southern town of Punkerton is a cesspool of corruption and intolerance; and the Ku Klux Klan, lurking in the shadows, is eager to seek revenge even against the innocent.
SILENT BETRAYAL explores the effects of betrayal when people are not who they claim to be but, rather, hide behind masks of deception and lies. SILENT BETRAYAL revolves around a theme of good versus evil where no one is exempt from falling off a pedestal of grace into sin's darkness.
