Описание: During the Cold War, more than 36,000 individuals entering Canada claimed Czechoslovakia as their country of citizenship. A defining characteristic of this migration of predominantly political refugees was the prevalence of anti-communist and democratic values. Diplomats, industrialists, politicians, professionals, workers, and students fled to the West in search of freedom, security, and economic opportunity.Jan Raska's Czech Refugees in Cold War Canada explores how these newcomers joined or formed ethnocultural organizations to help in their attempts to affect developments in Czechoslovakia and Canadian foreign policy towards their homeland. Canadian authorities further legitimized the Czech refugees' anti-communist agenda and increased their influence in Czechoslovak institutions. In turn, these organizations supported Canada's Cold War agenda of securing the state from communist infiltration. Ultimately, an adherence to anti-communism, the promotion of Canadian citizenship, and the cultivation of a Czechoslovak ethnocultural heritage accelerated Czech refugees' socioeconomic and political integration in Cold War Canada.By analyzing oral histories, government files, ethnic newspapers, and community archival records, Raska reveals how Czech refugees secured admission as desirable immigrants and navigated existing social, cultural, and political norms in Cold War Canada.

Описание: As the roaring twenties turned into the depressed thirties, southern farmers, far removed from theurban prosperity Americans had enjoyed during the 1920s heyday, found already difficult farmingconditions greatly intensified by the onset of the Great Depression. Agricultural incompetenceplagued the rural South through the misuse of land, depletion of natural resources, and a systemof single-crop farming that failed to adequately provide for growing families on small farms, especiallyin the cotton-producing Southeast. Poverty and desperation came to define the farmingcommunities of the rural South, both in reality and in Americans’ collective conscious. In The Farm Security Administration and Rural Rehabilitation in the South, Charles KennethRoberts traces the administrative and political history of the Farm Security Administration(FSA) and reconciles the administration’s goals with Franklin D. Roosevelt’s overall vision for theNew Deal. Roberts takes a grassroots approach to dissecting the FSA’s history. While other studieshave focused on FSA photography or community building, or even policy making in terms oftop-down government directives, Roberts focuses on the people and state governments who facedan immediate need to aid southern farmers within their own borders and to boost their states’crumbling agricultural economic bases. Roberts focuses on rural rehabilitation as a key aspect ofthe FSA and defines the agency’s legacy not in terms of its failures but rather in terms of an idealisticprogram whose modest successes were ultimately too few to effect real change for southernfarmers.Though Roosevelt failed to adequately recognize the plight of the southern farmer and politicalinfighting hindered many of the administration’s goals, the creation of the FSA stands as one ofthe first efforts to provide sustained relief to struggling southern farmers. In light of other federalprograms of the era, the FSA may seem like a mere footnote to the New Deal outside of its smallbut revered photography program. But, as Roberts shows, the FSA’s legacy has endured to thepresent day.

Patterson and the White South`s Dilemma: Evolving Resistance to Black Advancement ISBN: 1496809556 ISBN-13(EAN): 9781496809551 Издательство: Mare Nostrum (Eurospan) Рейтинг: Цена: 29260.00 T Наличие на складе: Есть у поставщика Поставка под заказ. Описание: As Mississippi's attorney general from 1956 to 1969, Joe T. Patterson led the legal defense for Jim Crow in the state. He was inaugurated for his first term two months before the launch of the Sovereignty Commission - charged ""to protect the sovereignty of Mississippi from encroachment thereon by the federal government"" - which made manifest a century-old states' rights ideology couched in the rhetoric of massive resistance. Despite the dubious legal foundations of that agenda, Patterson supported the organization's mission from the start and served as an ex-officio leader on its board for the rest of his life.Patterson was also a card-carrying member of the segregationist Citizens' Council and, in his own words, had ""spent many hours and driven many miles advocating the basic principles for which the Citizens' Councils were originally organized."" Few ever doubted his Jim Crow credentials. That is until September 1962 and the integration of the University of Mississippi by James Meredith. That fall Patterson stepped out of his entrenchment by defying a circle of white power brokers, but only to a point. His seeming acquiescence came at the height of the biggest crisis for Mississippi's racist order. Yet even after the Supreme Court decreed that Meredith must enter the university, Patterson opposed any further desegregation and despised the federal intervention at Ole Miss. Still he faced a dilemma that confronted all white southerners: how to maintain an artificially elevated position for whites in southern society without resorting to violence or intimidation. Once the Supreme Court handed down its decision in Meredith v. Fair, the state attorney general walked a strategic tightrope, looking to temper the ruling's impact without inciting the mob and without retreating any further. Patterson and others sought pragmatic answers to the dilemma of white southerners, not in the name of civil rights but to offer a more durable version of white power. His finesse paved the way for future tactics employing duplicity and barely yielding social change while deferring many dreams.
