The subject of Industrial Organic Chemistry covers such a wide range of topics and considers the utilization Of such a variety of raw materials of both animal and vegetable origin, and the production of such a multi tude of useful and valuable substances, that a thorough survey of the ground is a laborious undertaking. Nevertheless, the lapse of five years since the appearance of the previous edition of this work makes such a survey neces sary, as notable advances have been made in many of the chemical industries during that time.

Every chapter, therefore, has been revised and new matter added, while Older and less important portions have been stricken out. The chapters on Natural and Artificial Dye-colors have been largely rewritten, because of the rapid progress in discovery in these lines during the last few years. It has been sought to incorporate in the book all of this advance in our knowledge that is definitely accepted by chemists. Several new tabular statements have also been incorporated in these chapters, which it is hoped will prove of value.

The chapters on Fatty Oils, Essential Oils, Fermentation, Tanning, Textile Fibres, and Destructive Distillation have had important additions made to them.

The Bibliography has in all chapters been brought down to date, and the Statistics are the most recent attainable. The author desires to acknow ledge his indebtedness to numerous friends and correspondents for items of valuable information not readily accessible.
