Infrastructure, Environment, and Life in the Anthropocene explores life in the age of climate change through a series of infrastructural puzzles—sites at which it has become impossible to disentangle the natural from the built environment. With topics ranging from breakwaters built of oysters, underground rivers made by leaky pipes, and architecture gone weedy to neighborhoods partially submerged by rising tides, the contributors explore situations that destabilize the concepts we once relied on to address environmental challenges. They take up the challenge that the Anthropocene poses both to life on the planet and to our social-scientific understanding of it by showing how past conceptions of environment and progress have become unmoored and what this means for how we imagine the future.

Epistemology: The Key Thinkers tells the story of how our thinking about knowledge has developed, introducing you to some of the problems and forces that have dominated the history of philosophy.
Beginning with Plato, Aristotle, ancient sceptics, and the medievals, before moving to Descartes, the British empiricists, Kant, American pragmatism, and twentieth-century thinkers such as Ludwig Wittgenstein, W. V. O. Quine, Alvin Goldman, and beyond, each chapter guides you through the ideas, contribution, and legacy of a leading philosopher or movement. This second edition includes:
- A new chapter covering medieval epistemology - Extended guides to further reading and future directions for epistemology
The final chapter looks to the future, highlighting some of the very latest debates that energise philosophical writing today about knowledge and how we know what we know.

Описание: The Philosophy of Knowledge: A History presents the history of one of Western philosophy’s greatest challenges: understanding the nature of knowledge. Divided chronologically into four volumes, it follows conceptions of knowledge that have been proposed, defended, replaced, and proposed anew by ancient, medieval, modern and contemporary philosophers. Each volume centers around three key questions: what conceptions of knowledge have been offered? Which have shaped epistemology in particular and philosophy in general? How is knowledge conceived by philosophers now? Together these volumes trace the historical development of knowledge for the first time, covering: - Presocratics, Sophists and treatments of knowledge offered by Socrates and Plato - The influence of Aristotle and Augustine during the Middle Ages - Questions of science and religion in the 17th, 18th and 19th century and the work of Descartes, Hobbes, Kant and Leibniz - Contemporary discussions about scientific, social and self-knowledge and attempts to understand knowledge naturalistically, contextually and normatively. With original insights into the vast sweep of ways in which philosophers have sought to understand knowledge, The Philosophy of Knowledge: A History embraces what is vital and evolving within contemporary epistemology. Overseen by an international team of leading philosophers and featuring 50 specially-commissioned chapters, this is a major collection on one of philosophy’s defining topics.

Описание: Andrew Hetherington's engaging work answers the question, who is Paul? Who is this relentless and zealous persecutor of the church, this attack dog of the Pharisees, this privileged Greek-educated erudite and intrepid Jew who was both a rabbi and a Roman citizen? What power could possibly transform this man into the champion of Christianity, the apostle of the free spirit, the bastion of the early church, the crusading advocate of truth, and the conduit through which the gospel of grace would flow to the Gentile world? Paul's influence on humanity and its history, cannot be overestimated or ignored. His influence was inestimable, his impact incalculable and his legacy indisputable. Perhaps there are no more suitable words to describe the man or his life and ministry than his own words taken from his epistle to the Philippians two thousand years ago "for me to live is Christ, to die is gain". These words would not only define his extraordinary life, but would also exemplify the service of one who wholly and completely embraced the message of free grace. His was a life, that when transformed by God, became a catalyst for a cause that in the centuries to come would not only turn the world upside down, but impact all eternity for the Kingdom of God. Andrew D. Hetherington, (M.A. Multnomah University and Biblical Seminary), is Executive Director of OnPoint Ministries International in Los Angeles, CA and the author of Personal Evangelism: A Practical Guide to Sharing Your Faith. A frequent conference speaker, he also conducts personal evangelism seminars throughout the US.

Twenty-two chilling tales recommended by critics of supernatural fiction
Anthologies of ghost stories are perennially popular. Sometimes the raison d'etre for a collection might be that the stories embrace a particular theme or that the fame or authority of the compiler imbues a special appeal or credibility. However, it occurred to the Leonaur editors that the principal concern of anyone buying such an anthology must surely be that the stories included will be of the highest order as examples of originally plotted fine writing, guaranteed to deliver the required thrills and chills. In consideration of how that outcome might best be achieved and offered to readers we decided to research as many lists of 'the best ghost stories' as we could find, compiled by critics, informed journalists and authorities of supernatural fiction, to determine which stories those people--based on as much consensus as possible--believed were, indeed, the finest ghostly tales written during the 'golden age' of the genre. Sometimes their lists included well-known stories that would be familiar to most ghost story enthusiasts, so these were removed from consideration. What remained were 42 stories which had received deservedly high praise and these we have divided between two Leonaur volumes. These collections are also available as Leonaur 'Christmas Books' since they make ideal gifts, but are here offered in the familiar Leonaur 'Supernatural and Weird Fiction' cover for both a general readership and series collectors.
In volume two can be found the anonymous story 'Pichon & Sons of the Croix Rousse', 'The Story of Mary Ancel' by William Makepeace Thackeray, 'At Crighton Abbey' by Mary Braddon, 'The Miniature' by J. Y. Akerton, 'The Tapestried Chamber' by Sir Walter Scott and sixteen other creepy tales.
Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Описание: Another brilliant collection of tales from beyond the veil Tales of ghosts and horror can be found in every age, country and culture on earth; they have been passed down orally for millennia and in written form have existed for almost as long as literature itself. Although there have been notable novels of spine chilling hauntings there can be little doubt that the ghost story is a form ideally suited to short stories or novellas. The story that frightens can be explicitly so, with screaming phantoms, a morality tale or humorous, it can be subtly menacing with creeping horror, and can be set almost anywhere. Such stories have never waned in their popularity with the reading public and it is for this reason that so many authors have applied their talents to creating them. Essentially we love to be thrilled and chilled simultaneously. Some of the finest exponents of the ghost story have been specialists who became masters of the genre, while others wrote scary stories to the same high standard as all their work. In the middle of the 19th century the appetite for tales of terror burgeoned and a golden age was born that lasted until the outbreak of Great War. It is probably fair to say that the finest works of the genre were created during this period and it is principally from those that the twenty-nine stories in this substantial anthology have been drawn. This bumper collection of some of the best stories of the ghostly and horrific has been gathered together by Eunice Hetherington. In 'The Second Leonaur Book of Great Ghost and Horror Stories are 'The Yellow Cat' by Wilbur Steele, 'A Witches Den' by Mme Helena Blavatsky, 'The Box With Iron Clamps' by Florence Marryat, 'The Clavecin, Bruges' by George Wharton Edwards, 'The Lost Room' by Fitz-James O'Brien, 'The Sin Eater' by Fiona MacLeod and many more fine tales of the chilling and weird. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.
