This was the first time that the disease in humans was recognized as having been caused by the virus of encephalomyelitis of horses. While this disease was extremely prevalent in the summer of 1938, there were only 12 suspicious cases in horses in the summer of 1939 and only 8 in 1940, of which only 2 in 1939 and none in 1940 were proven.
