The picture here reproduced is from the wall-painting of the se. Corner of the Kort-do (the Golden Hall). The subject is Cakra-varti Cinta-mani Avalokitesvara (see notes under the Avalokitesvaras of To-ii and ro-san-jl, Vol. I: he is called in japan, Nio-i-rin and is said to have been painted by Don-ch , a Corean priest, who was renowned as being versed in Buddhism and Confucianism, but especially for his skill in coloured paintingg. He together with a priest called Ho'iio was sent by the king of Corea to the Japanese court during the reign of sui-ito (610 and arrived in Nara. Just as the monastery of H -riu-ii was being completed, and before interior decorations and furnishings 'were in place. This was the time and occasion for him to exhibit his powers, and his magnificent paintings may still be seen on the walls of the Kori-do. These paintings seem to have-greatly attracted the attention of foreigners. Dr: Anderson, 'f0r instance, says that they are in their design and colouring mudh like the productions of ancient Itarian artists and that they are far superior to those of later artists. He has not only supplied the model of sacred pictures for the Kasuga school by these wall-paintings but also taught us how to manufacture paper and ink and how to use the mill stone. We are much indebted to him in both sacred and secular matters.

Of the brozne images of Buddhas, made during the time of the Six dynasties. In Count Tanaka's collection, we have shown four in the twelfth volume. We now add five more to Our series of reproductions; these being smaller in size, but more excellent in workman ship and more attractive in every way. The middle three (nos. 2 to 4 inclusive) bear inscriptions. The second one. Two Buddhas sitting side by side in one screen, represents Sakyamuni and Prabhiitamtna, and on the pedestal there is a legend running thus: On the zud day, 7th year of Tien l'ao, this image Ls prepared to secure the happiness of my deemed father and mother, by Li Ta T'ung, a follower of Buddha. T'i n Pa'o is the eponym of Weh Hsfian Ti, of the Northern Ch'i dynasty: the 7th year of that period corresponds to 556, Western calendar. When the Western gei'dynas'ty came to an end in the 3rd year of Kung T: of that dynasty; also to the year of the end of the Liang dynasty of the south, in thg lst year of Tai P'ing of Ching Ti of that-same dynasty It also corresponds to the 7th year of Emperor Kimmel of our coun'try. The third figure, Maitreya Bodhisattda, is very attractive in the decorative design of the screen, while the attitude of tlfifigure is quite different from that of other images of the same Bodhisattva commonly seen in after times', he has a water-jar in the rigffi'fhand. The inscfiption'ofthe pedestal runs thus: On the roth day, 6th month, 2nd year of Shen Kuei, this image of M'aitreya Bodhisattva is prepared from my ardent devotion for the sake of peace in the country and for the happiness of my Six kindred families, by Lin Shih Te, a native of Tung-wu. This Slten Kuei is the eponym of Hsiao Ming T1 of the Northern Vl'ei dynasty. The 2nd year of that period corresponds to 519, to the t8th year of Tien Chien of Wu Ti of the Southern Liang dynasty, and to the I3 Year Of Emperor Keitai Of our country. The fourth image, shows that it is the figure of Avalokitesvara with a lotus - bud in the right-hand and a water-jar in the left. The inscription On the pedestal is as follows: On the 4th day. Loth month, 16th year of Tai Ho. This image is cast by Bhikshu Fui Chiao in memory of my deceased parents and for the sake of the young and old members of my family who are protected by a great number Buddhas. Tai H0 is the eponym of Hsiao Wen Ti of the Northern Wei dynasty; its r6th year'corresponds to 49-2, to the roth year of Ying Ming of Wu Ti, Southern Empire of Ch 1, and to the sth year of Emperor Ninken of our country. The firstjimage has a waiter-iar in the right-hand and a pinda in the left. The fifth image has the Chamara in the right hand (the left hand is missing); from the small' sitting images in the upper part of the screen, we readily understand that this figure of Avalokitesvara is in very old style. The first image, which has protruding busts, is like a female and this leads us to suppose that it shows this deity as a transformation of some female deity of Brahmanism. These two images (first and fifth) were probably cast at the same time as the remaining three. Perhaps during the Northern dynasty.

In each of the six panels there was depicted a beautiful lady standing under a tree the locks of her hair and her garments were done with feathers, but the feathers have mostly been torn off and now but little trace of them is to be seen save outlines. Some time ago, when repairing these screens, a paper was found inside of one which contained, in writing, the date 26th day, 6th month. 4th year of tempyo-shoho (august loth. From this, it is to be understood that these panels were made at some time between the 4th and the 8th years of tempyo-shoho. The faces and hands of the persons were painted in c010urs, but wherever feathers had been irsed for decorative purpose, there is nothing now but simple lines. It is probable that the trees and rocks were done in monochrome from the very first. We may distinctly trace the brushwork of these pictures. And hence get a good idea of the character of pictorial art at that time Although it was in an undeveloped state, we are led to suppose, from the method of depicting the complex character of trees and rocks, that probably they were copied from natural obiects: while the manner of representing the fissures in the rocks, suggests the influence of landscape artists of the T'ang dynasty, China. The lady playing with a jewel-shaped ball under a tree, shows the costume of the time: in this respect, it resembles the picture of Suri-devi, reproduced in the second volume of this series, and it is to be supposed that her face shows the ideal type of female beauty during the Nara era: from the suggestion of rouge on the flee, the thin black lines of the artificial high-eyebrows, the garments, and the style of dressing the hair, we get many an interesting glimpse at the customs of that remote time. Besides this: in the catalogue, the screen is described as being made with feathers, with some square Chinese ideographs on the folding-panels, and some Chinese literary compositions, all of the same material.

The artist who painted these pictures copies of copis of the originals, which were destroyed long ago] is Hiro tsura Sumiyoshi, who was otherwise known by the name of Naiki, and he was a son of Hirohisa. In his youth, he had the name of Hirosada. And he died in the 4th year of Bunkyfi (t864), at the age of seventy-one. As this production is strictly copied from fixed patterns handed down from a by-gone age. It cannot be expected to display the excellence of originality; but we must be sat'sfied with looking upon the classical painting. At this time, which has carefully brought down to us the characteristics of the Kwanpei period, renewed by this artist with his forceful and skilful brush; for such representation is extant in these pictures only.

The Detached Palace at Nagoya was formerly used as a castle by a branch of the Tokugawa family, the head of which was the Prince of Owari province. After the Restoration it was assigned to the War Department for sometime, and was occupied by troops until the lst day of June, 26th year of Mefii when it was made an Imperial Detached Palace. We give here a sketch describing something of the history of its construction. Iyeyasu Tokugawa (the, founder of the Tokugawa dynasty of Shoguns) gave the whole province of Owari as a hcf to his ninth son, Yoshitoshi, subsequently renamed Yoshinao, with a view to having him control the administration of its affairs from Nagoya. The Nagoya castle at that time was somewhat small in size, because it had previously belonged to Nobuhid Oda, who governed but one - half of the province in his time, and therefore Iyeyasu determined to rebuild it. On the 2sth day of the ist month. I4th year of Keicho (march zud, Iyeyasu, accompanied by Yoshitoshi, came in person from Sumpu (shizuoka) to Kiyosu (near Nagoya) and in the 10th month (november) he commanded Nagakatsu Maki to examine the strategical features of Nagoya, where, in the lst month of the next year (january-february, 1610) he issued a proclamation announcing that he would build a castle. Kiyomasa Kato, Masanori Fukushima, and several other daimyo. Where instructed to superintend the work of construction. Accordingly, these great retainers of Iyeyasu gathered together at the place and put up temporary buildings in the second intercalary month (march-april, where in two hundred thousand workmen were lodged. These artizans and labourers, working day and night, soon finished the task of construction. Certain portions of the castle were assigned to particular individuals, for the satisfactory condition of which they were held responsible and to which they gave their personal attention: especially the central tower Tenshu kaltu, or donjon) was built solely under the supervision of Kiyomasa Kato, while the main edifice( liommaru, citadel) and the exterior buildings Sotoguruwa) were under the immediate care of other daimyo. In the 9th month of the same year, Yoshitoshi moved into the castle, the external construction of which was completely finished in the 12th month. It is said that one of the minor buildings - called Kuroki-shoin (literally, Black-wood Hall which stands in the ground - used to be in the gardens of Kiyosu castle, and that it was removed to Nagoya, practically intact.
