Описание: Born Charles-Edouard Jeanneret, Le Corbusier (1887-1965) is widely acclaimed as the most influential architect of the 20th century. From private villas to mass social housing projects, his radical ideas, designs, and writings presented a whole-scale reinvention not only of individual structures, but of entire concepts of modern living. Le Corbusier s work made distinct developments over the years, from early vernacular houses in Switzerland through dazzling white, purist villas to dynamic syntheses of art and architecture such as the chapel at Ronchamp and the civic buildings in Chandigarh, India. A hallmark throughout was his ability to combine functionalist aspirations with a strong sense of expressionism, as well as a broader and empathetic understanding of urban planning. He was a founding member of the Congres international d architecture moderne (CIAM), which championed architecture as a social art. This book presents some of Le Corbusier s landmark projects to introduce an architect, thinker, and modern pioneer who, even in his unrealized projects, offered discussion and inspiration for generations to come.

Описание: In June 2013, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, presents the largest exhibition ever produced on Le Corbusiers prolific oeuvre, encompassing his work as architect, interior designer, artist, city planner, writer and photographer. Over a six-decade career, this towering figure of modern culture constantly observed and imagined landscapes using all the artistic techniques at his command, including watercolours, sketches, paintings, photographs and models. This accompanying publication, appearing 25 years after the Centre Pompidou released the seminal catalogue Le Corbusier, une encyclopedie , aspires to become a new sourcebook, giving an account of research developed worldwide in recent decades. Reflecting the geographic extension of his designs and built works as well as his indefatigable wanderlust, the book is structured as an atlas, with topographical entries allowing for the discovery of the major sites and cities where Le Corbusier worked. Featuring essays by an international range of curators, scholars and critics, and a trove of archival images and materials from the Fondation Le Corbusier in Paris, this lavishly illustrated volume presents a wholly unique way to explore the life and work of one of the most important visionaries of our time.

Описание: Le Corbusier (1887-1965) - visionary architect, urban planner and theorist of modernity, and also an accomplished painter and sculptor - made a profound impression on the 20th century in dramatically changing architectural design and the way people lived in it. This new book, coinciding with a major retrospective at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, shows the output of this major figure in modernity through the idea of human proportions, the human body being essential as a universal principle defining all aspects of architecture and spatial composition. Le Corbusier: The Measures of Man offers a fresh journey through his work. While the modernist Le Corbusier who created Purist architecture is often pitted against the post-war Le Corbusier, exponent of a concrete Brutalism and more organic forms, the book demonstrates how his entire approach in fact was perfectly seamless. The essays are arranged in five chapters: The Constants of Eurythmia, The Housed Body, The Dimensions of Anthropometry, The Inexpressible Space, and The Universal Man. They are complemented by five visual sections featuring a wealth of illustrations, showing the entire range of Le Corbusier's unceasing creativity, and include much previously unpublished or little-known material.

Le Corbusier and the Concept of Self

Описание: Although Le Corbusier never explicitly defined his concept of self, Richards finds extensive evidence of it in the urbanist's writings and work. Richards argues that Le Corbusier was indebted to Enlightenment philosopher Blaise Pascal, who believed the individual should withdraw from society and meditate in solitude on the nature of God and self. Le Corbusier's cities were designed accordingly to isolate people in cell-like apartments for the purpose of spiritual self-exploration.

Richards explores Le Corbusier's position in 20th-century intellectual life in the light of this fresh understanding, and he identifies a previously unrecognized alignment between the thought of Le Corbusier and of such figures as Albert Camus and Georges Bataille.

Описание: In his numerous writings, Le Corbusier remained uncharacteristically silent about his early career. This text examines his nascent years as a designer and architect, focusing on the period from 1907 to 1922 - the year he changed his name from Charles Edouard Jeanneret and establis ed his identity as Le Corbusier. The contributors to the book offer an account of Le Corbusier's formative years and the cultural, intellectual and artistic concerns that absorbed him as a young artist in Switzerland and Paris.

From 1907 to 1922 Jeanneret learned the art and craft of architecture and design, and defined his own image as an artist. The volume discusses the cultural climate of his Swiss hometown, La Chaux-de-Fonds; his early mentors, friends and clients; his educational pursuits, including his self-designed Grand Tour; and his first successes as an architect and designer. More than 350 illustrations - including architectural drawings and models, watercolours, sketches, photographs and furniture - show the wide range of young Le Corbusier's work and illuminate the principal themes and issues of his formative years.
