9788866480259 Vercelloni Matteo Minimum Design: Achille e Pier Giacomo Castiglioni ACC-distribution titles
Pier Giacomo Castiglioni (1913-1968) and Achille (1918-2002) are the eldest and the youngest of the three Castiglioni brothers who all studied architecture at the Milan Polytechnic. The two Castiglioni brothers were interested in both technology and art and in the 1940s began their original professional partnership, "Castiglioni brothers". The company was especially successful with their lamps for Arredoluce, Flos, and Artemide. The brothers worked from the viewpoint that design must restructure an object's function, form and production process, a philosophy they applied to every work they produced. Published in the same style as the successful 'Minimum Architects' series, the 'Minimum Design' series includes books about the major figures in the field of design, creators of objects that have become a part of our daily lives. The lamp on our desk, the chair we are sitting on or the glasses we are wearing have a genius behind to be discovered. These volumes will introduce in a practical manner the personalities and the works of the world's major designers by way of an historical-critical introduction to the work and life of each individual designer. An accurate selection of the designer's most famous objects arranged in chronological order and a critique of his or her work summarising the most significant reviews published in magazines and newspapers will complete the subject.

9781419704291 Star Trek: The Next Generation 36 Abrams
September 1987. With the launch of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Gene Roddenberry somehow managed to recapture lightning in a bottle. The strange magic that for more than two decades had sustained Star Trek, the cancelled space fantasy that refused to take a curtain call, had apparently blessed its successor as well. It was off network syndication that had transformed the original Star Trek from a qualified flop to an undeniable success story, and it was first run syndication that made this new incarnation a full fledged hit on the small screen; in fact, it was the highest rated dramatic series in syndication during much of its seven year run, and its popularity inspired four feature films and two spin off series. Now, timed to publish on the occasion of the series' twenty fifth anniversary, Star Trek: The Next Generation 365 will celebrate the show that introduced a whole new generation to the wonders of space exploration. Featuring new and rarely seen photographs and illustrations, as well as now classic set photography, development art and newly restored frame grabs from key episodes, Star Trek: The Next Generation 365 provides a fresh, accessible overview of the entire series, including an authorised guide to all 178 episodes. A visual celebration of the voyages of officers Picard, Riker, Data, Worf, Troi and more, the book's behind thescenes anecdotes and in depth episode analysis are sure to appeal to casual and longtime fans of the award winning show alike.

In spite of medical advances and the increasing number of severely brain-injured patients, the assessment and treatment of patients recovering from coma remain challenging. For over 10 years now, the Coma Science Group has been working on the scientific exploration of disorders of consciousness, with both scientific and clinical research agendas. This book is the result of all this work. The aim is to offer both clinicians and researchers an opportunity to acquire expertise in a field which is constantly developing.Besides diagnostic, prognostic and ethical issues, this book includes well-established findings on assessment techniques (i.e., behavioral scales, electrophysiological explorations and structural/functional neuroimaging) and treatment procedures, but also techniques under development (i.e., the use of classifiers, brain-computer interfaces, transcranial magnetic stimulation or deep brain stimulation) which will stimulate ideas for future research. The Coma Science Group presents here a comprehensive book for readers, regardless of whether they are already familiar with the difficult but exciting field of disorders of consciousness.

9783791346441 Magnum Revolution: 65 Years of Fighting for Freedom Prestel Publishing Limited
Culled from the archives of the prestigious 65-year-old photo agency founded by Henri Cartier Bresson, this collection of images from internationally renowned photographers is a compelling record of the recent decades of worldwide revolution.
The history of revolution is as old as humanity; yet it is only since the invention of photography that we have been able to discern the realities of these conflicts from the distance of time. Starting with the Hungarian uprising in 1956 and culminating with the most recent triumphs and tragedies of the »Arab Spring«, this book brings together hundreds of color and black-and-white images that depict historic events from a human perspective. Iconic images from revolutions in Prague, Nicaragua, Tiananmen Square, Romania, Ukraine, Poland, Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, and other locations are introduced in double-page spreads featuring the images of Magnum photographers such as Raymond Depardon, Burt Glinn, Rene Burri, Josef Koudelka, Susan Meiselas, and many more. Introduced by renowned »New Yorker« journalist Jon Lee Anderson, and featuring texts and interviews by Paul Watson, this uplifting and important book offers, for the first time, a collective understanding of the universal dream of freedom and the inevitability of change.

9781935202967 Lubell, Sam Never Built Los Angeles Thames & Hudson
Never Built Los Angeles explores the what if Los Angeles, investigating the values and untapped potential of a city still in search of itself. A treasure trove of buildings, master plans, parks, follies and mass-transit proposals that only saw the drawing board, the book asks: why is Los Angeles a mecca for great architects, yet so lacking in urban innovation? Featured are more than 100 visionary works that could have transformed both the physical reality and the collective perception of the metropolis, from Olmsted Brothers and Bartholomews groundbreaking 1930 Plan for the Los Angeles Region, which would have increased the amount of green space in the notoriously park-poor city fivefold; to John Lautners Alto Capistrano, a series of spaceship-like apartments hovering above a mixeduse development; to Jean Nouvels 2008 Green Blade, a condominium tower clad entirely in cascading plants. Through text and more than 400 colour and black-and-white illustrations drawn from archives around the U.S., Sam Lubell and Greg Goldin explore the visceral (and sometimes misleading) power of architectural ideas conveyed through sketches, renderings, blueprints, models and the now waning art of hand drawing. Many of these schemes promoting a denser, more vibrant city are still relevant today and could inspire future designs. Never Built Los Angeles will set the stage for a renewed interest in visionary projects in this, one of the worlds great cities.

9781780974002 Borzillo Carrie Kurt Cobain: The Nirvana Years Carlton Books
This unique telling of the story of Kurt Cobain's years with Nirvana is made up of quotes and interviews from the people who were there as the story was unfolding. Illustrated throughout with over 150 photographs, it's as near as possible to a day-by-day log of every significant event from the band's inception right through to Kurt Cobain's tragic early death. Spawned in the intensely fertile music scene that blossomed in and around Seattle in the late 1980s, Nirvana instantly distinguished itself by virtue of the singular passion that drove its leader, Kurt Cobain. The singer was imbued with incredible personal magnetism, as well as an uncommon gift for articulating the chaotic emotions of what has been called a lost generation, but his extreme distaste for the attention attracted by those talents proved overwhelming. Nirvana's influence is certain to be felt for many years to come, and this book looks for the reasons behind their seismic impact.

The 700 islands, cays and islets of the Bahamas are scattered across over 96,000 square miles of the Atlantic Ocean. Only 23 of the islands are inhabited, and amongst these, visitors will find an intriguing blend of the old and new, the expected and unexpected. The character of each island is different: there is San Salvador, with its turquoise waters that are perfect for diving, Inagua with its untamed wilderness and renowned wildlife, Grand Bahama with its glitz and glamour and New Providence with the bustling cosmopolitan capital, Nassau. Sustainable architecture is one of the most popular trends today. With dense urban living and less green space available, green walls and roofs are helping to fill that gap. These living structures can be created with vegetation, which helps to absorb rainwater, provide insulation, and lower temperatures while creating a habitat for natural flora and fauna. 'Green Walls Green Roofs' features projects from all over the world, showing how these elements work in various climates. Ranging from the tropical houses in Singapore to inner-city buildings in North America, this richly illustrated book will show you how living architecture can enrich our world.

9781447259350 Helen Rappaport Four Sisters Pan Macmillan
Award-winning and critically acclaimed historian Helen Rappaport turns to the tragic story of the daughters of the last Tsar of all the Russias, slaughtered with their parents at Ekaterinburg. On 17 July 1918, four young women walked down twenty-three steps into the cellar of a house in Ekaterinburg. The eldest was twenty-two, the youngest only seventeen. Together with their parents and their thirteen-year-old brother, they were all brutally murdered. Their crime: to be the daughters of the last Tsar and Tsaritsa of All the Russias. Much has been written about Nicholas II, his wife Alexandra and their tragic fate, as it has about the Russian Revolutions of 1917, but little attention has been paid to the Romanov princesses, who - perhaps inevitably - have been seen as minor players in the drama. In Four Sisters, however, acclaimed biographer Helen Rappaport, puts them centre stage and offers readers the most authoritative account yet of the Grand Duchesses Olga, Tatiana, Maria and Anastasia. Drawing on their own letters and diaries and other hitherto unexamined primary sources, she paints a vivid picture of their lives in the dying days of the Romanov dynasty. We see, almost for the first time, their journey from a childhood of enormous privilege, throughout which they led a very sheltered and largely simple life, to young womanhood - their first romantic crushes, their hopes and dreams, the difficulty of coping with a mother who was a chronic invalid and a haeomophiliac brother, and, latterly, the trauma of the revolution and its terrible consequences. Compellingly readable, meticulously researched and deeply moving, Four Sisters gives these young women a voice, and allows their story to resonate for readers almost a century after their death.

London is the royal capital of the world. Nowhere else is steeped in such regal riches. Royalty can be read about in history books, watched in colourful ceremonies and wondered at in lively gossip columns. But most of all, the royal city can be seen and understood in its wonderful, diverse architecture. Using his own unique method of turning photographs into works of art, the highly creative architectural photographer John Cleave continues Editions Didier Millets innovative Sketchbook series by focusing on the citys royal buildings. Here, dating back many centuries, are the glorious palaces of kings and queens, their places of worship and repose, the parks they laid out and the institutions they patronised. Whether in public spaces or in private corners, royalty has stamped its mark right across the city. This isnt just the London of tourists. It is the place Londoners know and love, too, and John Cleaves beautiful pictures evoke Royal Londons finest details, its quiet confidence and its enduring majesty.

Paul Gauguin created some of the most advanced art in a brilliant generation of artists all of whom struggled against the stifling conformity of the late 19th century's artistic mainstream. He created paintings whose radically simplified lines and colours echoed the unschooled art of the rustic and native cultures he loved. After his famously disastrous stay with Vincent van Gogh in southern France, Gauguin escaped European civilization for the Polynesian islands. Immersing himself in the culture, he produced a series of radiant canvases and powerful sculptures his last great works. From his childhood in Peru to his experiences in Tahiti, the story of Gauguin's life is recounted in authoritative text by an expert on the Post-Impressionists and powerful imagery by an award-winning illustrator.
9780099909408 Hemingway Moveable Feast Random House
'If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life, it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast' Hemingway's memories of his life as an unknown wrer living in Paris in the 1920s are deeply personal, warmly affectionate and full of wit. Looking back not only at his own much younger self, but also at the other writers who shared Paris with him - literary 'stars' like James Joyce, Wyndham Lewis, Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, Ezra Pound and Gertrude Stein - he recalls the time when, poor, happy and writing in cafes, he discovered his vocation.
9780143122487 Nikolai Gogol The Night Before Christmas Random House (USA)
Gogol's classic, uproarious folktale, presented in a beautiful hardcover edition perfect for giving as a gift.
Written in 1831, this dark tale relates the adventures of Vakula, the blacksmith, in his fight against the devil, who has stolen the moon above the village of Dikanka and is wreaking havoc on its inhabitants, all to win the love of the most beautiful girl in town. The basis for many film and opera adaptations, and still a story traditionally read aloud to children on Christmas Eve in Ukraine and Russia, The Night Before Christmas is the best holiday tale by the man whom Vladimir Nabokov called 'the greatest writer Russia has yet produced'.
Nikolai Gogol (1809-1852) was the son of a Ukrainian gentleman farmer. He attended a variety of boarding schools, where he proved an indifferent student but was admired for his theatrical abilities. In 1828 he moved to St. Petersburg and began to publish stories, and by the mid-1830s he had established himself in the literary world and been warmly praised by Pushkin. In 1836, his play The Inspector-General was attacked as immoral, and he left Russia, remaining abroad for most of the next dozen years. During that time he wrote two of his best-known stories, 'The Nose' and 'The Overcoat,' and in 1842 he published the first section of his masterpiece Dead Souls. Gogol became increasingly religious as the years passed, and in 1847 he became the disciple of an Orthodox priest who influenced him to burn the second part of Dead Souls and then abandon writing altogether. After undertaking an extreme fast, he died at the age of forty-two.

Their function as a link between two or more places over otherwise impassable obstacles distinguishes bridges from all the other types of structures or buildings. In the history of mankind, they evolved with a great variety of profiles and construction methods. Today, new technologies allow the implementation of projects with previously unattain - able shapes and sizes. Because bridges are very often particularly prominent and symbolic ventures, architects and engineers have to find the best balance possible between statics and design. From gigantic constructions that cross over huge bodies of water and delicate bridges as part of skyscrapers, to expressive arches in urban environments and minimalist structures in natural settings: This volume presents works that represent contemporary cutting-edge engineering as well as the esthetic highlights of recent years.

In the six months since Anthony, Lucy, and George survived a night in the most haunted house in England, Lockwood & Co. hasn't made much progress. Quill Kipps and his team of Fittes agents keep swooping in on Lockwood's investigations. Finally, in a fit of anger, Anthony challenges his rival to a contest: the next time the two agencies compete on a job, the losing side will have to admit defeat in the "Times" newspaper.
Things look up when a new client, Mr. Saunders, hires Lockwood & Co. to be present at the excavation of Edmund Bickerstaff, a Victorian doctor who reportedly tried to communicate with the dead. Saunders needs the coffin sealed with silver to prevent any supernatural trouble. All goes well-until George's curiosity attracts a horrible phantom.
Back home at Portland Row, Lockwood accuses George of making too many careless mistakes. Lucy is distracted by urgent whispers coming from the skull in the ghost jar. Then the team is summoned to DEPRAC headquarters. Kipps is there too, much to Lockwood's annoyance. Bickerstaff's coffin was raided and a strange glass object buried with the corpse has vanished. Inspector Barnes believes the relic to be highly dangerous, and he wants it found. The author of the blockbuster Bartimaeus series delivers another amusing, chilling, and ingeniously plotted entry in the critically acclaimed Lockwood & Co. series.Praise for The Screaming Staircase
"This story will keep you reading late into the night, but you'll want to leave the lights on. Stroud is a genius at inventing an utterly believable world which is very much like ours, but so creepily different. Put "The Screaming Staircase" on your 'need to read' list " -Rick Riordan"A pleasure from tip to tail, this is the book you hand the advanced readers that claim they'd rather read Paradise Lost than Harry Potter. Smart as a whip, funny, witty, and honestly frightening at times, Stroud lets loose and gives readers exactly what they want. Ghosts, kids on their own without adult supervision, and loads of delicious cookies." -Elizabeth Bird, "School Library Journal"
"Stroud shows his customary flair for blending deadpan humor with thrilling action, and the fiery interplay among the three agents of Lockwood & Co. invigorates the story (along with no shortage of creepy moments)." -Publishers Weekly"A heartily satisfying string of entertaining near-catastrophes, replete with narrow squeaks and spectral howls." -Kirkus Reviews

9783775738637 Kuster Ulf Gustave Courbet Hatje Cantz
A splendid volume featuring the work of Gustave Courbet, the great reviver of French nineteenth-century art, whose lifelike images continue to fascinate a diverse audience. The life and works of Gustave Courbet (1819 1877) widely considered one of the most outstanding advocates of Realism represent a revolt against the academic tradition of painting and conservative politics. Technically masterful, his captivating paintings contrasted the idealization of nature with realistic representation, often triggering downright scandal among his contemporaries. By examining Courbet s major works self-portraits, portraits, genre paintings, landscapes, nudes, hunting scenes, still lifes this splendid volume spans the Frenchman s entire artistic career and his involvement with politics. Renowned experts shed light on his development of a realistic, critical style, describe his great influence on both contemporaries and later generations, and consider his works in their own art-historical context, as well as his relationship to early photography, which also strove to create a faithful reproduction of reality
9781780975580 Elliott Paul Black Sabbath Carlton Books
One of the most successful, influential and provocative bands of all time, Black Sabbath - dubbed "The Beatles of Heavy Metal" by Rolling Stone magazine - changed the landscape of popular music forever. Their current reunion has been one of the most talked-about twists in rock's recent narrative. Having sold over 70 million albums worldwide (including 15 million in the US) since their early 1970s breakthrough, their comeback album 13 raced to the top of the charts across the globe. A mammoth world tour is now underway. Fronted by irrepressible, idiosyncratic and frequently death-defying singer Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath began their bumpy road to fame with a sound that rocked harder, deeper and "uglier" than anybody else's. Albums like Black Sabbath and Paranoid warped the sensibilities of several generations and are regarded as two of the finest rock records ever made. The years since their ascent have seen fights and reconciliations, crazy excess and bouts of self-destruction, but their popularity has always proven as vast and durable as their mythological status. The reunion sees them back at the forefront of fame, now straddling both the mainstream and the counter-culture. Written by a leading music journalist and illustrated throughout with rare and previously unpublished photographs, Black Sabbath: The Vault is the ultimate interactive celebration of the iconic rock group. Featuring 20 items of removable facsimile memorabilia, including posters, tickets, flyers and signed photographs, Black Sabbath: The Vault gives the reader a front-row seat (and backstage access as well) to the career of these true legends of rock.

9780300208351 Foa Michelle Georges Seurat: The Art of Vision Yale University Press
This revelatory study of Georges Seurat (1859-1891) explores the artist's profound interest in theories of visual perception and analyzes how they influenced his celebrated seascape, urban, and suburban scenes. While Seurat is known for his innovative use of color theory to develop his pointillist technique, this book is the first to underscore the centrality of diverse ideas about vision to his seascapes, figural paintings, and drawings. Michelle Foa highlights the importance of the scientist Hermann von Helmholtz, whose work on the physiology of vision directly shaped the artist's approach. Foa contends that Seurat's body of work constitutes a far-reaching investigation into various modes of visual engagement with the world and into the different states of mind that visual experiences can produce. Foa's analysis also brings to light Seurat's sustained exploration of long-standing and new forms of illusionism in art. Beautifully illustrated with more than 140 paintings and drawings, this book serves as an essential reference on Seurat.

Piet Mondrian's rigorously geometric paintings in primary colours are icons of the 20th century that had a powerful impact on popular taste in art and design. This volume brings together more than 240 superb paintings with documentary images from the artist's life. The less-well-known work that Mondrian did in the 30 years before his breakthrough to abstraction--especially his landscape and flower paintings--is remarkably beautiful, and to see it arranged chronologically is to enter the mind of an artist who is constantly looking for the next step that will take him from traditional realism to a universal vision of colour and form. The book includes rare photographs of Mondrian's studios in Paris and New York City as well as reproductions of more than 1,200 known works of Mondrian's in black-and-white.

9780993191114 Syutkin, Olga CCCP Cook Book Thames & Hudson
As the Soviet Union struggled along the path to communism, food shortages were commonplace, and both Party authorities and Soviet citizens had to apply every ounce of ingenuity to maximize often-inadequate resources. The stories and recipes contained in the CCCP Cook Book reflect these turbulent times: from basic subsistence meals consumed by the average citizen (like okroshka, a cold soup made with the fermented beverage kvass) to extravagant banquets held by the political elite (suckling pig with buckwheat), with a scattering of classics (beef stroganoff) in between. Each recipe is introduced with a historical story or anecdote from the period, and illustrated using images sourced from original Soviet recipe books collected by the authors, food historians Olga and Pavel Syutkin.
Many of the sometimes extraordinary-looking pictures depict dishes whose recipes used unobtainable ingredients, placing them firmly in the realm of "aspirational" fantasy for the average Soviet household. In their content and presentation, the recipes and illustrations act as windows into the cuisine and culture of the era.
CCCP Cook Book offers an illustrated history of Soviet cuisine told through the stories and popular recipes from the period. The book contains 60 recipes from the Soviet period, including such delicacies as aspic, borscht, caviar and herring, by way of bird's milk cake and pelmeni.

An inside look at a fascinating culture and a perfect entry point into an art form as old as civilisation, THE ART OF LANGUAGE INVENTION is a wild linguistic adventure that will have readers ready to rub shoulders with horse lords and dark elves.

9783836560108 Aalto (Basic Arch) Taschen
Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) made a unique modernist mark. Influenced by both the landscape and the political independence of his native Finland, he designed warm, curving, compassionate buildings, wholly set apart from the slick, mechanistic, geometric designs that characterized much contemporary European practice.
Whether a church, a villa, a sauna, or a public library, Aalto s organic structures tended to replace plaster and steel with brick and wood, often incorporating undulating, wave-like forms, which would also appear in his chair, glassware, and lamp designs.
An adherent to detail, Aalto insisted upon the humanity and societal role of architecture, stating: Modern architecture does not mean using immature new materials; the main thing is to work with materials towards a more human line. Many of his public buildings such as Saynatsalo Town Hall, the lecture theatre at Otaniemi Technical University, the Helsinki National Pensions Institute and the Helsinki House of Culture may be seen as psychological as well as physical landmarks in the rebuilding of Finland after the ravages of war.
This book brings together Aalto s key works to introduce the architect hailed as a champion of environmentally sound, progressive design, with a deep-rooted sense of home.
9783836560009 Dali (Basic Art) Taschen
Painter, sculptor, writer, film-maker, and all-round showman Salvador Dali (1904 1989)was one of the twentieth century s greatest exhibitionists and eccentrics. One of the first artists to apply the insights of Freudian psychoanalysis to art, he is celebrated in particular for his surrealist practice, with such conceits as the soft watches or the lobster telephone, now hallmarks of the surrealist enterprise, and of modernism in general.
Dali frequently described his paintings as hand-painted dream photographs. Their tantalizing tension and interest resides in the precise rendering of bizarre elements and incongruous arrangements. As Dali himself explained, he painted with the most imperialist fury of precision, but only to systematize confusion and thus to help discredit completely the world of reality.
Revolutionizing the role of the artist, the mustache-twirling Dali also had the intuition to parade a controversial persona in the public arena and, through printmaking, fashion, advertising, writing, and film, to create work that could be consumed and not just contemplated on a gallery wall.
This book explores both the painting and the personality of Dali, introducing his technical skill as well as his provocative compositions and challenging themes of death, decay, and eroticism.
9783836500852 Kahlo (Basic Art) Taschen
The arresting pictures of Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) were in many ways expressions of trauma. Through a near-fatal road accident at the age of 18, failing health, a turbulent marriage, miscarriage and childlessness, she transformed the afflictions into revolutionary art.
In literal or metaphorical self-portraiture, Kahlo looks out at the viewer with an audacious glare, rejecting her destiny as a passive victim and rather intertwining expressions of her experience into a hybrid surreal-real language of living: hair, roots, veins, vines, tendrils and fallopian tubes. Many of her works also explore the Communist political ideals which Kahlo shared with her husband Diego Rivera. The artist described her paintings as the most sincere and real thing that I could do in order to express what I felt inside and outside of myself.
This book introduces a rich body of Kahlo s work to explore her unremitting determination as an artist, and her significance as a painter, feminist icon, and a pioneer of Latin American culture.
9783836507462 Kandinsky (Basic Art) Taschen
The Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944), who later lived in Germany and France, is one of the pioneers of 20th-century art. Nowadays he is regarded as the founder of abstract art and is, moreover, the chief theoretician of this type of painting. Together with Franz Marc and others he founded the group of artists known as the "Blane Reiter" in Munich. His art then freed itself more and more from the object, eventually culminating in the First Abstract Watercolor of 1910. In his theoretical writings Kandinsky repeatedly sought the proximity of music; and just as in music, where the individual notes constitute the medium whose effect stems from harmony and euphony, Kandinsky was aiming for a pure concord of color the rough the interplay of various shades. Gauguin had demanded that everything "must be sacrificed to pure colors." Kandinsky was the first to realize this and thus to influence a whole range of artists.
9783836504133 Rivera (Basic Art) Taschen
Diego Rivera (1886 1957) is a loud presence on the art historical stage. With devout political principles and a turbulent romantic history, he was at once husband and paladin of Frida Kahlo, advocate and adversary of Stalin s Soviet Union, and liberator and traitor of Leon Trotsky.
Vibrant, graphic, and often monumental, Rivera s paintings carry the same live political and passionate charge as his personal biography. Fusing European influences such as Cubism with a socialist ideology and an exaltation of Mexico s indigenous and popular heritage, he created a new iconography for art history and for his country. He became one of the most important figures in the Mexican mural movement and won international acclaim for his public wall paintings, in which he presented a utopian yet accessible vision of a post-revolutionary Mexico. In 1931, Rivera was the subject of MoMA s second ever monographic exhibition.
This book explores the unique blend of influence and ideology which secure Rivera s place as both a unique and a universal painter, bound to the particular turbulent experience of early 20th century Mexico, and yet preoccupied with subjects such as revolution and class inequity which continue to speak to us today.
9783836504263 Rothko (Basic Art) Taschen
Resisting interpretation or classification, Mark Rothko (1903 1970) was a prominent advocate for the artist s consummate freedom of expression. Although identified as a key protagonist of the Abstract Expressionist movement, first formed in New York City, Rothko rejected the label and insisted instead on a consummated experience between picture and onlooker.
Following a repertoire of figurative works, Rothko developed his now iconic canvases of bold color blocks in red, yellow, ochre, maroon, black, green. With these shimmering, pulsating color masses, Rothko stressed that he had not removed the human figure but rather put symbols or shapes in its place. These intense color forms contained all the tragedy of the human condition. At the same time, Rothko explicitly empowered the viewer in the expressive potential of his work. He believed A picture lives by companionship, expanding and quickening in the eyes of the sensitive observer.
From his early development through to his most famous color fields, this book introduces the intellect and influence of Rothko s dramatic, intimate, and revolutionary work.

Unleash the unconscious: Provoking the establishment with primal instincts WithSalvador Dalias its figurehead, the great ship of Surrealism traversed the turbulent seas of the early twentieth century with sails billowing withdreams and desires. |9780847848225 Zeiger Mimi Tiny Houses in the City Rizzoli |
How we live in cities-smaller, denser, smarter-is at the heart of Tiny Houses in the City. Urban areas across the globe are experiencing a renaissance, with once forgotten downtowns and neighborhoods becoming increasingly popular for redevelopment. This book looks at the tiny house movement through the lens of metropolitan life. Tiny Houses in the City features an international collection of more than thirty homes that exemplify compact living at its best. The houses, apartments, and multifamily buildings and developments included make great architecture out of challenging locations and narrow sites. Focusing on dwelling spaces all under 1,000 square feet, Tiny Houses in the City illustrates strategies for building tiny in urban areas that include urban infill, adaptive reuse, transforming and flexible living spaces, and micro-unit buildings. The projects range from a 344-square-foot studio apartment in Hong Kong with movable walls, transformable furniture, and hidden storage that can be configured into twenty-four unique scenarios in a single space, to a townhouse-like London residence built in an old alley between two stately homes. Many of the residences chronicled in Tiny Houses in the City are indeed unique in design, but their economical size and ingenious interior spaces are the epitome of practicality and illustrate an acute understanding of compact living and its potential for the urban realm.

Then, into her peaceful landscape comes a documentary crew. Solomon’s skill is sound. He records, he listens, he hears. And when he meets Laura, he discovers that she has an extraordinary talent: an ability to mimic sounds. It’s a gift that earns her the nickname Lyrebird.
From that point, Laura’s life is turned on its head. When the documentary crew offers her a way forward, a bridge to another kind of life, she takes it.
But while Solomon knows the world will love Laura, will it free her to spread her wings – or will it trap her in a gilded cage? Like all wild birds, she needs to fly free…

9780500293072 Peill, James The English Country House Thames & Hudson
Ranging from Kentchurch Court, a former fortified medieval manor house that has been the seat of the Scudamore family for nearly 1,000 years, to a delightful Strawberry Hill-style Gothic house in rural Cornwall and car-crazed Goodwood House, this beautifully illustrated book showcases ten outstanding British country houses, all still in the hands of the original families. James Peill recounts the ups and downs of such deep-rooted clans as the Cracrofts, landowners in Lincolnshire since the 12th century, whose late 18th-century Hackthorn Hall is a perfect example of the kind of house Jane Austen describes in her novels (indeed, she appears on their family tree), as well as the relatively newly arrived Biddulphs, who constructed Rodmarton, an Arts & Crafts masterpiece, in the first decades of the last century. James Fennell has once again provided superb photographs of a wealth of gardens, charming interiors, bygone sporting trophies, fine art collections and fanciful family memorabilia, making The English Country House a delicious treat for Anglophiles and lovers of old houses.

Andrew Wyeth is an essential introduction to the enduring masterworks of this profoundly popular American artist. Published on the occasion of the centennial of the artist s birth, this handsome book highlights works spanning the entirety of the artist s seven-decade career painting the landscapes and people he knew in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, where he lived, and in Maine, where he summered. Many of his most important landscapes and portraits were created in and around his Chadds Ford studio, now part of the Brandywine River Museum of Art, with which Andrew Wyeth was intimately connected since its founding in 1971. A short introduction provides an overview of his life, and descriptive captions contextualize some fifty of the artist s finest and most beloved paintings, including Pennsylvania Landscape (1942), Wind from the Sea (1947), Christina s World (1948), Trodden Weed (1951), Roasted Chestnuts (1956), Braids (1977), and Pentecost (1989). Readers will also be treated to works previously unseen, such as Betsy s Beach (2006) and Crow Tree (2007).

From Ernest Hemingway's Preface: 'There are many kinds of stories in this book. I hope you willnd some that you like... In going where you have to go, and doing what you have to do, and seeing what you have to see, you dull and blunt the instrument you write with. But I would rather have it bent and dulled and know I had to put it on the grindstone and hammer it into shape and put a whetstone to it, and know that I had something to write about, than to have it bright and shining, and nothing to say, or smooth and well-oiled in the closet, but unused.'

9780907462392 Understanding Watercolours ACC-distribution titles
This book acts as a practical introduction to the subject of collecting British watercolour paintings. There is a lot more to collecting than noting just the price, the name of the artist and deciding whether or not one likes the subject. Many watercolours are either not signed or bear false signatures, or perhaps have been saddled with misleading attributions. The text and carefully chosen illustrations take collectors behind the formal signature on the picture and show them what to look for in it, the idiosyncrasies of the artist, his style and his individual methods of working. Yet even when all the technical points are understood there remains the whim of fashion which varies over long periods and has moved round, ignoring or praising each artist in turn. Without an understanding of the movement of fashion, past collections and ideas on collecting, it would be hard to understand the subject.

9780300060133 Kalnein Architecture in France in the 18 Century HB Yale University Press
French architecture of the 18th century - which exhibited great technical ability and refined taste - influenced architectural style throughout Europe. This book is a survey of the French architecture of the period. It begins with the origins of the "style moderne" under the last years of Louis XIV, discusses the end of Rococo and the return to antiquity, and concludes with the Revolutionary architecture and the house of Madame Recamier. Kalnein describes the development of palace and hotel architecture by the two great architects de Cotte and Boffrand, discussing such large urban projects as the reconstruction of Rennes and the Places Royales. He traces the return to antiquity (which began when the scholars of the Academic d'Architecture were sent to Rome), the revolutionary architecture with its grand, but never executed, projects, and the shift from neoclassicism to early romanticism. Kalnein also examines the decorative arts of the period, which became even more important tharchitecture in the Rococo period. Focusing on such architects as Boffrand, Gabriel, and Redoux, he shows how a study of their building decoration illuminates the evolution of "style moderne," the battle between Rococo and Neoclassicism, and the dissemination of French styles throughout Europe.

9780789209016 Larry Silver Hieronymus Bosch Abbeville Press
Four hundred little people frolic au naturel with overgrown songbirds and raspberries; a pudgy blue demon serenades a fashionable young couple with a tune piped through his own elongated nose; a knife-wielding set of disembodied ears stalks the damned through hell. The phantasmagoric imagery of Hieronymus Bosch (d. 1516) has been the source of widespread interest ever since the painterGCOs lifetime, and is still so enigmatic that scholars have theorized that it contains hidden astrological, alchemical, or even heretical meanings. Yet none of these theories has ever seemed to provide an adequate understanding of BoschGCOs work. Moreover, the considerable professional success that the artist enjoyed in his native Hertogenbosch, not to mention his membership in a traditional religious organization, suggests that he pursued not a sinister secret agenda but simply his personal artistic vision. This intriguing new monograph by noted art historian Larry Silver interprets that artistic vision with admirable lucidity: it explains how BoschGCOs understanding of human sin, morality, and punishment, which was conceived in an era of powerful apocalyptic expectation, shaped his dramatic visualizations of hell and of the temptations of even the most steadfast saints. SilverGCOs account of BoschGCOs artistic development is one of the first to benefit from recent technical investigations of the paintings, as well as from the reexamination of the artistGCOs drawings in relation to his paintings. Hieronymus Bosch is also unique in how securely it places its subjectGCOs work in the broader history of painting in the Low Countries: Silver identifies sources of BoschGCOs iconography in a wide range of fifteenth-century panel paintings, manuscript illuminations, and prints, and describes how, despite their own religiousness, BoschGCOs pictures helped inspire the secular landscape and genre scenes of later Netherlandish painters. Augmented by 310 illustrations, most in color, including many dramatic close-ups of BoschGCOs intricately imagined nightmare scenes, this is the definitive book on a perennially fascinating artist.

William Holman Hunt was one of the major artistic talents of the Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood, founded in 1848. Hunt's work was always characterised by great
seriousness of purpose - he was the only member of that group to remain committed to its principles - and his paintings include many of its most beautiful and powerful images. By any
standards Holman Hunt is one of the major British artists of the nineteenth century, and this catalogue raisonee provides the detailed treatment he merits.
introduction assesses Hunt's life and artistic practice, and devotes a section to his aims, philosophy and religious beliefs. His talent for portraying the natural world with great intensity, his
dramatisation of moments of deep emotion, and his extraordinary effects of light and colour make his oeuvre immediately accessible. But his mature paintings incorporate symbolism that
cannot be fully understood without detailed knowledge.
The catalogue entries thoroughly explore this, drawing extensively on the artist's own writings and correspondence,
much of it unpublished. The main catalogue is divided into two chronologically arranged sections, oils and works on paper. B
9781597110358 Fandomania Thames & Hudson
In Fandomania, photographer Elena Dorfman examines the pop culture phenomenon of "cosplay," in which participants dress up in costumesaand live part of their livesaas characters from video games, animated films, and Japanese graphic novels. This exploding subculture flourishes at convention centers, college dorms, private clubs, and in homes across the country. Dorfman puts herself quietly behind the scenes of these fan-based events to create a remarkable collective portrait. As she describes it, "The theater of cosplay has no boundaries, is unpredictable, open-ended. It includes both the fantastic and the mundane, the sexually aberrant and innocent, female characters who become samurai warriors and brainy scientists, and male characters who magically change their sex." Explorations of identity through portraiture are at the forefront of Dorfman's work, with the blurred lines between fantasy and reality a continuing theme. She allows each individual a spotlight in which to enact their fantasy. The effect is pointedly evocative of this new world of role playing and narrative, one in which scenery is secondary and persona is everything.

Here are the ladies who pioneered and perfected the art of titillating performance in the 1950s, as captured by famous female photographer and pin-up girl Bunny Yeager. Celebrities shown include Dixie Evans, Blaze Starr, Bonnie Bell, Michelle "Toots" LAmour, and Kitten DeVille, and Lana Loy. These women practiced the art of teasing with varying and increasing degrees of nudity, and were billed under many monikers, including stripper, exotic or erotic dancer, burlesque queen, and stripteuse. Though most strip clubs have abandoned the delayed gratification of "teasing" in recent decades, the art of striptease is undergoing revival. Yeagers images embody the mix of sultry and playful that characterized the art during the 1950s. Here famous subjects pose in the spotlight amidst smoky nightclubs, as well as at home or relaxing on the beach. If you love women, youll love this journey back into the era of the 1950s.

9783899553321 Doppelganger: Images of the Human Being Gestalten
The digital age has fundamentally changed traditional notions of who we are and how we wish to be perceived. The music producer Chris Walla puts it this way: Confronted with our significantly more banal everyday life, we re measuring our actual selves against our online selves with hopeful resignation. Doppelganger presents current trends in the depiction of human beings. In today s images and sculptures, personal identities are being intensified, altered, or created through the use of techniques such as deformation and construction/deconstruction as well as the obliteration of classical proportions, visual traditions, and what is generally considered beautiful and fashionable. The book shows permutations of the outer human shell created with costumes and masks as well as photo-technical and artistic manipulation. These take their visual cues from such diverse aesthetics as Dada, surrealism, high tech, cutting-edge fashion design, and the folklore of other cultures. Masquerades and artificial characters are used imaginatively to enhance and obscure true identities. With examples ranging from the intimate to the radical, Doppelganger explores how many or how few effects the depiction of a person can take in order to function as such. In doing so, the book shows that the unique visual appearances being created today often reveal more about the identities of their subjects and creators than their real faces ever could.

Whether they're glowing from a neon sign or scrawled as graffiti on the wall, letters are both meaningful and beautiful. They also seem to pop up where you least expect it, on a bicycle wheel that looks like an 'O' or wooden boards that form an 'E.' With approximately 250 images taken by amateur photographers, Focus: Letters shines a spotlight on the infinite number of ways letters decorate our world, proving that sometimes the vehicle can be even more interesting then the message itself.

9780701185008 Vaughan, Hal Sleeping with the enemy: Coco Chanel, nazi agent Random House
Coco Chanel, high priestess of couture, created the look of the chic modern woman: her simple and elegant designs freed women from their corsets and inspired them to crop their hair. By the 1920s, Chanel employed more than two thousand people in her workrooms, and had amassed a personal fortune. But at the start of the Second World War, Chanel closed down her couture house and went to live quietly at the Ritz, moving to Switzerland after the war. For more than half a century, Chanel’s life from 1941 to 1954 has been shrouded in rumour. Neither Chanel nor her biographers have told the full story, until now.
In this explosive narrative Hal Vaughan pieces together Chanel’s hidden years, from the Nazi occupation of Paris to the aftermath of the Liberation. He uncovers the truth of Chanel’s anti-Semitism and long-whispered collaboration with Hitler’s officials. In particular, Chanel’s long relationship with ‘Spatz’, Baron von Dincklage, previously described as a tennis-playing playboy and German diplomat, and finally exposed here as a Nazi master spy and agent who ran an intelligence ring in the Mediterranean and reported directly to Joseph Goebbels.
Sleeping with the Enemy tells in detail how Chanel became a German intelligence operative, Abwehr agent F-7124; how she was enlisted in spy missions, and why she evaded arrest in France after the war. It reveals the role played by Winston Churchill in her escape from retribution; and how, after a nine-year exile in Switzerland with Dincklage, and despite French investigations into her espionage activities, Coco was able to return to Paris and triumphantly reinvent herself – and rebuild the House of Chanel.
As Hal Vaughan shows, far from being a heroine of France, Chanel was in fact one of its most surprising traitors.
