9783897900257 Ildar Galeev Max Penson: Photographer of the Uzbek Avantgarde ACC-distribution titles
From 1924 the Russian photojournalist Max Penson (1893 - 1959) travelled through his adoptive homeland of Uzbekistan as a reporter. His photographs offer insight into a time when the country was loosening its centuries-old traditions and was confronted with a new political and social structure. These photographs, discovered three years ago in an attic and shown for the first time in this publication, come from the photographer's so far unseen legacy. They portray a country that in the early 20th century was a largely unknown part of mysterious and magical Central Asia. The awakening from this fairytale began just at the time when Max Penson was on the road with his camera, transmitting the upheaval of this ancient culture in fascinating photo reportages. Like no other photographer of his generation Max Penson documented the radical changes of a country that was only just being liberated from medieval social structures. Max Penson, a contemporary of the artist Alexander Rodtschenko and a friend of the film director Sergej Eisenstein, left behind a unique documentation of these changes. Max Penson was a photographer between tradition and revolution. This publication presents, by means of recently rediscovered works, the extraordinary documentary achievement of the Russian photojournalist, who portrayed in gripping photo reportages Uzbekistan's transformation from a medieval social structure to a Soviet Socialist Republic.

Publication Date: 13 Mar 2012 The exhibition and its accompanying catalogue explore the abiding themes of still life across the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries: the fruit piece, the game piece, kitchen and banquet still lifes, the flower painting, musical instruments, the cabinet of curiosities, and the trompe-l'oeil. The diversity of artistic treatment of these themes in different countries will be shown through related works, such as the fruit still lifes of the female artists Louise Moillon and Fede Galizia or the kitchen scenes by Jean-Simeon Chardin and Luis Melendez. Other artists who cultivated this genre and who are also represented in the exhibition and in the catalogue include Juan Sanchez Cotan, Juan van der Hamen, Pieter Claesz, Juan Zurbaran, Rembrandt van Rijn, Antonio de Pereda, Nicolas Largillierre, Jean-Baptiste Oudry, Luis de Melendez and Francisco de Goya. The exhibition has been made possible due to the commitment of the many lending institutions, private collectors and museums, such as the National Gallery of Art in Washington, The Metropolitam Museum in New York, The Louvre Museum, The Prado Museum, The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, The Mauritshuis in The Hague, The National Gallery in London and the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, among so many others. This volume allows an insight into the theme, through the essays and the individual studies of all paintings, written by such scholars as Peter Cherry, John Loughman and Lesley Stevenson. Volume II, devoted to still-life painting in the 19th and 20th centuries, is due for publication in October 2011.

9780847837854 Colacello Bob Andy Warhol: Liz Rizzoli
Frequently hailed as the greatest movie star of all time, Elizabeth Taylor was a friend of Warhols in the 1970s and 1980s. The personification of charisma whose highly public life charged with drama, tragedy, and romance, this iconic muse was a perfect vehicle for Warhols vivid silkscreen portraiture derived from press clippings, publicity shots, and film stills. Warhol made over fifty portraits of her in all her incarnations-- from the ethereally beautiful child-actress (National Velvet, 1963) to the commanding, voluptuous screen goddess (Blue Liz as Cleopatra, 1962). Brought together for the first time, each portrait captures and amplifies the intensity, the extravagance, the carnality, and the resilience that were the unique hallmarks of Elizabeth Taylors notorious and beloved character. Andy Warhol (1928-1987) is widely regarded as a defining figure not only of the Pop Art movement of the 1960s but of an entire cultural era. He worked prodigiously across a vast range of media, including painting, photography, print-making, drawing, sculpture, film (sixty experimental films between 1963 and 1968), television ("Andy Warhol's TV," 1982 and "Andy Warhol's Fifteen Minutes," 1986), publishing (Interview magazine and various books), happenings, and performances.

From posters for punk-rock bands and indie filmmakers to fanzines and other independent publications, the art of the punk movement revolutionized design in ways whose influence is still felt today, and reflected the consciousness of a counterculture with a clarity seldom seen since. Drawing on private and public archives of rare material from around the world, this heavily illustrated book presents an unrivaled collection of punk art and ephemera that incorporates every aspect of the movement, from the earliest occurrences of punk symbolism in posters and flyers for underground bands to the explosion of fanzines and Xerox culture, and from rare photographs of musicians such as the Sex Pistols and the Screamers to the artwork of Crass, Jamie Reid, John Holmstrom, and the contemporary street artist Banksy. With more than three hundred images and accompanying essays by Johan Kugelberg, Jon Savage, and William Gibson, this definitive visual narrative illustrates how the DIY ethic of the punk era inspired a movement in graphic arts and design whose influence is still felt among the most significant figures in the fields today.

9788866480549 Minimum Design: Eero Saarinen ACC-distribution titles
Eero Saarinen was born in Finland in 1910. After his family moved to the United States in 1923 Eero graduated from Yale University where he subsequently completed post-graduate work at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. This famous school of architecture and design was directed by his father Eliel and, it was here that Eero met Charles Eames and Florence Schust Knoll. The three became close friends and worked together on some of the most remarkable projects in the history of American and international design.Throughout his career Saarinen divided his time between architecture and design. He designed some of the most important post-Second World War buildings in America (the General Motors Technical Center, the MIT chapel and auditorium, the TWA Terminal at J.F.K. Airport in New York), and his objects, most of which manufactured by Knoll, are absolute icons of contemporary design. He died prematurely at the age of 51 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Published in the same style as the successful 'Minimum Architects' series, the 'Minimum Design' series includes books about the major figures in the field of design, creators of objects that have become a part of our daily lives. The lamp on our desk, the chair we are sitting on or the glasses we are wearing have a genius behind them to be discovered. These volumes introduce in a practical manner the personalities and the works of the world's major designers by way of an historical-critical introduction to the work and life of each individual designer. An accurate selection of the designer's most famous objects arranged in chronological order and a critique of his or her work summarising the most significant reviews published in magazines and newspapers completes the subject.

We could tell you the year is 1944, that the main character is called Tyrone Slothrop and that he has a problem because bombs are falling across Europe and crashing to earth at the exact locations of his sexual conquests. But that doesn't really begin to cover it. Reading this book is like falling down a rabbit hole into an outlandish, sinister, mysterious, absurd, compulsive netherworld. As the "Financial Times" said, 'you must forget earlier notions about life and letters and even the Novel.' Forty years since publication, "Gravity's Rainbow" has lost none of its power to enthral.

9783836549974 Jane & Serge. A Family Album Taschen
The Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg family album The highly public love affair of French singer-songwriter Serge Gainsbourg and British actress Jane Birkin captured the hearts and imaginations of a generation. The moment Jane and Serge met on a movie set in 1968, sparks flew. They would spend the next 12 years together, a passionate union that produced the controversial duet Je taime... moi non plus (whose explicit lyrics and orgasmic moans caused so much fuss that the Vatican declared it offensive) and, in 1971, the legendary album Melody Nelson as well as a daughter, Charlotte, who has become a successful actress in her own right. From the earliest days of Jane and Serge's romance until their split in 1980, Janes brother Andrew Birkin was a frequent presence in their lives; an avid photographer, he snapped thousands of candid family photos during those years. Birkins picturesvery few of which have ever been publishedoffer a rare view of daily life for the couple, bringing us back to a place and time we have long idolized. Though more than 30 years have passed since the two parted ways, and over two decades since Serge parted from this world, the passion for Jane and Serge has endured. This treasure trove is sure to fan the flames of its undying embers.
9783836539357 Michelangelo. Complete Works (1 Volume Slipcase) Taschen
Il divino. This is a glorious exploration of Michelangelo's works. Before reaching the tender age of thirty, Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564) had already sculpted "David" and "Pieta", two of the most famous sculptures in the entire history of art. His achievements as a sculptor, painter, draughtsman, and architect are unique - no artist before or after him has ever produced such a vast, multi-faceted, and wide-ranging oeuvre. This is demonstrated not only by the frescoes of the Sistine Chapel but also by Michelangelo's monumental sculptures and his unconventional architectural designs, whose forms went far beyond the accepted vocabulary of his day. Such was his renown that Michelangelo was the subject of two biographics during his lifetime. TASCHEN brings you this comprehensive two-volume edition that explores Michelangelo's life and work in more depth and detail than ever before. The first volume concentrates on the life of Michelangelo via an extensive and copiously illustrated biographical essay; the main body of the book presents his work in four parts providing a complete analytical inventory of Michelangelo's paintings, sculptures, buildings and drawings. Gorgeous, full page reproductions and enlarged details bring readers up close to the works. This sumptuous book also takes account, to a previously unseen extent, of Michelangelo's more personal traits and circumstances, such as his solitary nature, his thirst for money and commissions, his miserliness, his immense wealth, and his skill as a property investor. In addition, the book tackles the controversial issue of the attribution of Michelangelo drawings, an area in which decisions continue to be steered by the interests of the art market and the major collections. This is the definitive work about Michelangelo for generations to come

ANSEL ADAMS' 400 PHOTOGRAPHS is intended as a must-have gift and reference book for anyone who appreciates photography and the allure of the natural world. Few artists or photographers of any era can claim to have produced four hundred images of lasting beauty and significance. It is a testament to Ansel's vision and his prodigious output that a book of this scale can be justified, and it is a point of pride for Little, Brown to publish a comprehensive overview of the work of Ansel Adams in a single well-packaged volume.

In his book, An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth, Chris Hadfield takes readers deep into his years of training and space exploration to show how to make the impossible possible. Through eye-opening, entertaining stories filled with the adrenaline of launch, the mesmerizing wonder of spacewalks and the measured, calm responses mandated by crises, he explains how conventional wisdom can get in the way of achievement - and happiness. His own extraordinary education in space has taught him some counterintuitive lessons: don't visualize success, do care what others think, and always sweat the small stuff. You might never be able to build a robot, pilot a spacecraft, make a music video or perform basic surgery in zero gravity like Colonel Hadfield. But his vivid and refreshing insights in this book will teach you how to think like an astronaut, and will change, completely, the way you view life on Earth - especially your own.

Their function as a link between two or more places over otherwise impassable obstacles distinguishes bridges from all the other types of structures or buildings. In the history of mankind, they evolved with a great variety of profiles and construction methods. Today, new technologies allow the implementation of projects with previously unattain - able shapes and sizes. Because bridges are very often particularly prominent and symbolic ventures, architects and engineers have to find the best balance possible between statics and design. From gigantic constructions that cross over huge bodies of water and delicate bridges as part of skyscrapers, to expressive arches in urban environments and minimalist structures in natural settings: This volume presents works that represent contemporary cutting-edge engineering as well as the esthetic highlights of recent years.

Paul Gauguin created some of the most advanced art in a brilliant generation of artists all of whom struggled against the stifling conformity of the late 19th century's artistic mainstream. He created paintings whose radically simplified lines and colours echoed the unschooled art of the rustic and native cultures he loved. After his famously disastrous stay with Vincent van Gogh in southern France, Gauguin escaped European civilization for the Polynesian islands. Immersing himself in the culture, he produced a series of radiant canvases and powerful sculptures his last great works. From his childhood in Peru to his experiences in Tahiti, the story of Gauguin's life is recounted in authoritative text by an expert on the Post-Impressionists and powerful imagery by an award-winning illustrator.

9780714867762 Alfred Hitchcock (Masters of Cinema) Phaidon Press Ltd.
Alfred Hitchcock (UK, 1899-1980) is undeniably the world's most famous film director. His name has become synonymous with the cinema, and each new generation takes the same pleasure in rediscovering his films, which are now treasures of our artistic heritage. Hitchcock started out in the British silent cinema of the 1920s, which reached its peak with successful thrillers such as The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934), Sabotage (1936) and The Lady Vanishes (1938). Recognized as a 'young genius', Hitchcock moved to Hollywood and set about reinventing cinematic tradition, combining the modern with the classic in films such as Vertigo (1957), North by Northwest (1959) and The Birds (1963). Hitchcock gave talented actors such as James Stewart and Cary Grant the chance to play enduring antiheroes and imprinted the public imagination with the myth of the 'blonde', as embodied by Grace Kelly, Kim Novak and Tippi Hedren.

9780300208351 Foa Michelle Georges Seurat: The Art of Vision Yale University Press
This revelatory study of Georges Seurat (1859-1891) explores the artist's profound interest in theories of visual perception and analyzes how they influenced his celebrated seascape, urban, and suburban scenes. While Seurat is known for his innovative use of color theory to develop his pointillist technique, this book is the first to underscore the centrality of diverse ideas about vision to his seascapes, figural paintings, and drawings. Michelle Foa highlights the importance of the scientist Hermann von Helmholtz, whose work on the physiology of vision directly shaped the artist's approach. Foa contends that Seurat's body of work constitutes a far-reaching investigation into various modes of visual engagement with the world and into the different states of mind that visual experiences can produce. Foa's analysis also brings to light Seurat's sustained exploration of long-standing and new forms of illusionism in art. Beautifully illustrated with more than 140 paintings and drawings, this book serves as an essential reference on Seurat.

Berlin, the capital city of Germany, can be seen as a 25-year-old city. Following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the city's identity evolved to be modern, tolerant and at times even eccentric. This identity was forged by the reunion of two close but disparate populations. On one side, Berliners lived in a city of right angles: grey, dull, comfortless, with uniformity as dogma. On the other, the architecture was more traditional and eclectic, and the lifestyle much more comfortable. Today, thanks to the successful reunification, Berlin is becoming one of the most visited capitals in Europe. In his Berlin Sketchbook, artist Fabrice Moireau ever passionate about urban architecture captures both the iconic sites and hidden corners of Germany's capital, bringing out the best of the city.

9788866480525 Minimum Design: Stefano Giovannoni ACC-distribution titles
Architect and industrial designer Stefano Giovannoni was born in La Spezia in 1954. He earned a degree from the Faculty of Architecture in Florence in 1978. An unfailing creator of best-selling objects, starting from his first industrial project, the 'Girotondo' series for Alessi, he has designed objects that have become full-fledged mass cults: the Bombo stool, Mami series of pots and Alessi bathroom have all garnered record-breaking sales within the design industry. Convinced that the best proof of a project's validity is its commercial success, Giovannoni succeeded in blending the very high quality of his designs with the product's mass market appeal, interpreting and often anticipating the public's wants. While a designer's work is usually identified with furniture design, Giovannoni's vast output instead ranges from designing cars to ice cream, from small and large electrical appliances to electronic equipment.

9780300169126 Jones, Michael (Author), McFadden, Susanna (Author Art of Empire: The Roman Frescoes and Imperial Cult Chamber in Luxor Temple Yale University Press
The Luxor Temple of Amun-Re, built to commemorate the divine power of the pharaohs, is one of the iconic monuments of New Kingdom Egypt. In the 4th century C.E., the Roman Imperial government, capitalizing on the site's earlier significance, converted the temple into a military camp and constructed a lavishly painted cult chamber dedicated to the four emperors of the Tetrarchy. These frescoes provide fascinating insight into the political landscape of the late Roman Empire and, as the only surviving wall paintings from the tetrarchic period, into the history of Roman art. The culmination of a groundbreaking conservation project, this volume brings together scholars across disciplines for a comprehensive look at the frescoes and their architectural, archaeological, and historical contexts. More than 150 stunning illustrations present the paintings for the first time in their newly conserved state, along with a selection of 19th-century documentary watercolors. This remarkable publication illustrates how physical context, iconography, and style were used to convey ideology throughout Rome's provinces.

Now, without his godly powers, the four-thousand-year-old deity must learn to survive in the modern world until he can somehow find a way to regain Zeus's favor.
But Apollo has many enemies-gods, monsters, and mortals who would love to see the former Olympian permanently destroyed. Apollo needs help, and he can think of only one place to go . . . an enclave of modern demigods known as Camp Half-Blood.

9780099549253 Faulks, Sebastian Where My Heart Used to Beat Random House
On a small island off the south coast of France, Robert Hendricks, an English doctor who has seen the best and the worst the twentieth century had to offer, is forced to confront the events that made up his life. His host, and antagonist, is Alexander Pereira, a man whose time is running out, but who seems to know more about his guest than Hendricks himself does. The search for sanity takes us through the war in Italy in 1944, a passionate love that seems to hold out hope, the great days of idealistic work in the 1960s and finally unforgettably back into the trenches of the Western Front. The recurring themes of Sebastian Faulkss fiction are brought together with a new stylistic brilliance as the novel casts a long, baleful light over the century we have left behind but may never fully understand. Daring, ambitious and in the end profoundly moving, this is Faulkss most remarkable book yet.

9780847849727 Burdan Amanda C., Fahlman Betsy, Podmaniczky Chris Rural Modern: American Art Beyond the City Rizzoli
An essential look at American modernism as seen through the landscape painting of Thomas Hart Benton, Charles Demuth, Georgia O Keeffe, Grant Wood, Andrew Wyeth, and many others. Paintings of New England coastlines, small-town Pennsylvania, Southwestern canyons, Midwestern farms, and other evocative landscapes fill the pages of Rural Modern. More than sixty modernist works, created between the wars, present an important and often overlooked history: how American painters adapted avant-garde styles like Cubism and Fauvism to reimagine familiar landscapes and develop a distinctively American modernist vernacular.Richly illustrated and with insightful essays by noted scholars, Rural Modern traces this development through a broad range of works by both lesser-known and widely celebrated artists, including Arthur Dove, Dale Nichols, Grant Wood, N. C. Wyeth, Charles Sheeler, Charles Burchfield, Marsden Hartley, and Stuart Davis. As important as the marvel of the twentieth-century city was to modernist artists such as these, many sought respite and even refuge in quieter, rural areas of the country, and soon helped to confirm modernism s enduring nature."

9783836547499 Bauer Hermann, Prater Andreas Baroque (Basic Art) Taschen
From dramatically-lit paintings to elaborate, gilded interiors, the Baroque era introduced a new dimension to Western art. In place of the harmonious perspectives and elegant proportions of the Renaissance came a world of momentum, energy, and heightened spectacle. The style influenced many forms and disciplines between the 16th and 18th century, infusing painting, sculpture, architecture, and music with a direct, often emotive, appeal to the audience. This TASCHEN Basic Art 2.0 edition focuses on Baroque painting. Through mythological and religious scenes, still-lifes, and beyond, we explore how a vivid vocabulary of deep colors, intense shadows, dramatic gestures, and diagonal lines infiltrated both Northern and Southern schools. Along the way, we meet such leading Baroque practitioners as Nicolas Poussin, Annibale Carraci, Caravaggio, Velazquez, Rubens, and Rembrandt, and examine their particular innovations in composition, narrative, and light to achieve a Baroque sensibility

9782080202697 Servat, Henry-Jean Brigitte Bardot: My Life in Fashion Thames & Hudson
Legendary actress Brigitte Bardot led fashion revolutions throughout her career; this retrospective includes BBs comments on her iconic style in a rare, intimate interview. Brigitte Bardot is a style icon whose legacy has undeniably shaped the face of fashion as we know it. Discovered by a magazine editor at only 14 years old, she found fame and admiration on the big screen in the 1950s, and then became the fiery sex symbol of the groovy and liberated 1960s. Over the course of her career, all of the great French designers?including Christian Dior, Pierre Balmain, and Pierre Cardin?outfitted Bardot on and off screen. In photographs that capture her attending prestigious receptions or on glamorous visits to the United States, in fashion shoots and on film sets, this volume illustrates all the key looks that BB wore and brought to the international spotlight as she invented and edited her own highly imitated style. In an extensive?and extremely rare?interview, accompanied by her personal comments on the photos, Bardot explains the context of the often vanguard fashions she wore, making headlines wherever she went. Evoking French style and the glamor of St. Tropez, her legacy endures?from ballerina slippers with sweeping skirts to figure-hugging knitwear, gingham fabrics and gypsy dresses, kohl eyeliner and tousled hair.

9780500343326 Clevenot, Dominique Ornament and Decoration in Islamic Architecture Thames & Hudson
Surface decoration has always played a fundamental role in Islamic architecture. As human representation is forbidden in Islamic religious monuments, designers employed mosaics, stucco, brickwork and ceramics, and the vigorous use of brilliant colour to reach unparalleled heights of expression. It is this ornamental dimension of Islamic architecture that is explored in this magnificent volume. Rather than limiting itself to an exclusively historical or chronological perspective, Ornament and Decoration in Islamic Architecture presents four successive approaches to its subject. The first part offers an overview of Islamic architecture, discussing the great diversity it contains. Dealing exclusively with techniques, the second part considers the materials most often used as well as the expertise of the builders and Muslim decorative artists, and the third part explores themes in Islamic ornamentation. Section four discusses aesthetics, and studies the relationship between the buildings - the structures or their architectonic components - and their ornamental coverings. Each of these topics is presented through a number of outstanding examples and then through comparable monuments from all over the Islamic world. For anyone in thrall to such great wonders as the Taj Mahal and the Alhambra, and for everyone interested in the world of Islam, this lavish publication will be

9783836559386 Byrne The First Six Books of the Elements of Euclid (Bibliotheca Universalis) Taschen
Nearly a century before Mondrian made geometrical red, yellow, and blue lines famous, 19th-century mathematician Oliver Byrne employed the color scheme for his 1847 edition of Euclid s mathematical and geometric treatise Elements. Byrne s idea was to use color to make learning easier and diffuse permanent knowledge. The result has been described as one of the oddest and most beautiful books of the 19th century. The facsimile of Byrne s vivid publication is now available as part of TASCHEN s Bibliotheca Universalis series. A masterwork of art and science, it is as beautiful in the boldness of its red, yellow, and blue figures and diagrams as it is in the mathematical precision of its theories. In the simplicity of forms and colors, the pages anticipate the vigor of De Stijl and Bauhaus design. In making complex information at once accessible and aesthetically engaging, this work is a forerunner to the information graphics that today define much of our data consumption.

9780300060133 Kalnein Architecture in France in the 18 Century HB Yale University Press
French architecture of the 18th century - which exhibited great technical ability and refined taste - influenced architectural style throughout Europe. This book is a survey of the French architecture of the period. It begins with the origins of the "style moderne" under the last years of Louis XIV, discusses the end of Rococo and the return to antiquity, and concludes with the Revolutionary architecture and the house of Madame Recamier. Kalnein describes the development of palace and hotel architecture by the two great architects de Cotte and Boffrand, discussing such large urban projects as the reconstruction of Rennes and the Places Royales. He traces the return to antiquity (which began when the scholars of the Academic d'Architecture were sent to Rome), the revolutionary architecture with its grand, but never executed, projects, and the shift from neoclassicism to early romanticism. Kalnein also examines the decorative arts of the period, which became even more important tharchitecture in the Rococo period. Focusing on such architects as Boffrand, Gabriel, and Redoux, he shows how a study of their building decoration illuminates the evolution of "style moderne," the battle between Rococo and Neoclassicism, and the dissemination of French styles throughout Europe.

9780521863261 Lisa A. Kirschenbaum The Legacy of the Siege of Leningrad, 19411995: Myth, Memoires, Monuments (hardback) Cambridge Academ
The siege of Leningrad constituted one of the most dramatic episodes of World War II, one that individuals and the state began to commemorate almost immediately. Official representations of 'heroic Leningrad' omitted and distorted a great deal. Nonetheless, survivors struggling to cope with painful memories often internalized, even if they did not completely accept, the state's myths, and they often found their own uses for the state's monuments. Tracing the overlap and interplay of individual memories and fifty years of Soviet mythmaking, this book contributes to understandings of both the power of Soviet identities and the delegitimizing potential of the Soviet Union's chief legitimizing myths. Because besieged Leningrad blurred the boundaries between the largely male battlefront and the predominantly female home front, it offers a unique vantage point for a study of the gendered dimensions of the war experience, urban space, individual memory, and public commemoration.

9780764321535 Tina Skinner Geisha: women in Japan Flower &Willow World Schiffer
This is the most comprehensive assembly of historic geisha images ever compiled in a book. Over 500 exquisite views - drawn from postcards produced primarily between 1900 and 1940 - illustrate the rarified world of Japans now-extinct licensed pleasure districts. Soon after the West pried open Japans doors in 1853, stories about Japan began to circulate wildly through Victorian societies. Geisha quickly attained folkloric status as both imagery, widely traveled stage productions, and titillating novels spread their fame, and postcards bearing their images circulated the globe. Enter a world dripping in symbolism, elevated by accomplishment. For the Westerner, it is a world of exotic misconceptions, characterized by a male fantasy of the submissive Asian beauty devoted to his pleasure. Equally exotic to the average Japanese, Geisha embody the highest level of a proud culture. Geisha are accomplished in music, letters, and the intricate art of the tea ceremony. Epitomizing feminine grace and beauty, geisha are always carefully adorned, every hair oiled into place, and every step and gesture perfectly executed. The comprehensive text introduces historical background about the talented geisha entertainers and other women who were indentured in virtual slavery within the famed and idealized "Flower and Willow World." High-class prostitutes, as well as lowly tea servers are pictured, and the life of early 20th century women in Japan is explored. The symbolic kimono, poses, and accouterments of the women photographed are explained in captioning that will help to open the eyes of many Westerners to Japanese culture, and help to debunk misconceptions regarding the status and nature of geisha. For the Japanese historian, this is the best source of original imagery ever assembled within two covers about Geisha. For anyone with even a casual interest in this utterly unique culture, this book will prove a captivating page turner. .

9780099286837 Maugham Somerset Theatre Random House
Julia Lambert is in her prime, the greatest actress in England. On stage she is a true professional, in full possession of her emotions. Off stage, however, she is bored with her husband, less disciplined about her behaviour. She is at first amused by the attentions of a shy but ambitious young fan, then thrilled by his persistence - and at last wildly but dangerously in love... Although Maugham is most celebrated as a novelist and shortstory writer, it was as a playwright that he first knew success. Theatre is both a tribute to a world from which he had retired and a persuasive testimony to his enthusiasm for drama and the stage.

9780099532538 Murakami Haruki What I Talk about When I Talk about Running Random House
In 1982, having sold his jazz bar to devote himself to writing, Murakami began running to keep fit. A year later, he'd completed a solo course from Athens to Marathon, and now, after dozens of such races, not to mention triathlons and a slew of critically acclaimed books, he reflects upon the influence the sport has had on his life and on his writing. Equal parts travelogue, training log, and reminiscence, this revealing memoir covers his four-month preparation for the 2005 New York City Marathon and settings ranging from Tokyo's Jingu Gaien gardens, where he once shared the course with an Olympian, to the Charles River in Boston among young women who outpace him. Through this marvellous lens of sport emerges a cornucopia of memories and insights: the eureka moment when he decided to become a writer, his greatest triumphs and disappointments, his passion for vintage LPs, and the experience, after fifty, of seeing his race times improve and then fall back. By turns funny and sobering, playful and philosophical.

9788864130019 Dal Pozzolo Giorgione ACC-distribution titles
The year 2010 marks the fifth centenary of Giorgione's death, which occurred in October 1510. This is one of the few certain facts relating to the painter: no signature attributable to him exists, nor have any autograph writings been found in archives. Were it not for two official documents regarding a painting of his dated 1507, formerly in the Palazzo Ducale in Venice and now lost, and the frescoes executed in 1508 for the Fondaco dei Tedeschi - all that remains of these is a fragment depicting a nude, now in the Ca' d'Oro - Giorgione might never have existed.

In 1550 Giorgio Vasari sought to write a biographical and artistic account of him, which, however, he considerably revised, and sometimes contradicted, in the second edition of his Lives, published in 1568. This monograph is intended to highlight what is known about Giorgione against the backdrop of an extraordinarily vibrant Venice, where the presence of artists like Giovanni Bellini, Lorenzo Lotto, Vittore Carpaccio and many others less well-known was contemporary with that of the most outstanding members of a dynamic and sophisticated society.

9789814217521 Cleave, John Istanbul Thames & Hudson
Istanbul: City of Two Continents showcases both the historical as well as the modern aspects of Istanbul a fascinating capital of two past empires and the largest city in modern Turkey. The illustrations, artistically rendered using digital techniques, feature famous landmarks together with the lesser known but equally evocative areas of modern Istanbul. The historic centre of Istanbul is an overwhelming record of Byzantine, Ottoman and republican history; of incomparable religious buildings, fine secular architecture, and bustling commerce. To the north, across the fabled Golden Horn, fashion centres, high-rise buildings and the latest in shopping malls cater to a thriving economy. To the east lies the Bosphorus. Lined with enchanting waterfront houses, palaces and castles, this bustling waterway joins the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara, and forms the boundary between Europe and Asia. On the Asian shore, which houses one-third of the citys population in ever-spreading suburbs, the historic co-mingles with fine stores, lively cafes and tranquil marinas.

9783791343457 Jones Leslie et al John Baldessari: Pure Beauty Prestel Publishing Limited
A major figure in contemporary art, John Baldessari is widely considered one of the most influential artists to emerge since the mid-1960s. From his text-and-image paintings of the 1960s to his more recent photo collages and installations, Baldessari has continued to make art that addresses the social and cultural impact of mass culture, often playfully through strategies of appropriation and deconstruction. Baldessari's lifelong interest in language, written and visual, and the interaction between the two, raises questions about the nature of communication and perception. More than 150 of Baldessari's works are presented in full colour in this monograph published in conjunction with a major exhibition at Tate Modern and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Eleven essays by critics, curators, art historians and former students round off this volume. Few contemporary artists have achieved the range and relevance of Baldessari's oeuvre, which is finally given its due in this beautiful and elegant limited edition, including a fold-out poster designed specially for this hardback volume by John Baldessari.

Bruce Springsteen is a platinum-shifting, stadium-filling rock star, but he is also more nuanced than that. He is a man of the people, making conventional-and-proud-of-it rock music aimed at the American working class. A supreme songwriter, Springsteen is a rock 'n' roll legend, and this lavishly illustrated book is an examination of his life and music. A comprehensive overview of a fascinating and unique artist, Boss: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band - The Illustrated History is a tribute to Springsteen's body of work, from the rock anthem Born to Run to his sepia-toned analysis of working-class misery, The River. There's Springsteen's gnarly, Bonnie and Clyde-style tableaux Atlantic City, as well as his debunking of guys' yearnings for youthful Glory Days. Throughout it all, Springsteen has demonstrated that he knows how to create a classic track. Find out once and for all why his nickname is The Boss.
    9783836532716 Degas (Basic Art) Taschen
Dance class: The master of bodies in motionMost commonly associated with the birth of the Impressionist movement in mid-19th-century Paris, Edgar Degas (1834 1917) in fact defied easy categorization and instead developed a unique style, strongly influenced by Old Masters, the body in motion, and everyday urban life. The elder scion of a wealthy family, Degas cofounded a series of exhibitions of Impressionist art, but soon disassociated himself from the group in pursuit of a more realist approach. His subjects centered on the teeming, noisy streets of Paris, as well as its leisure entertainments, such as horse racing, cabarets, and, most particularly, ballet. With often ambitious, off-kilter vantage points, his images of ballerinas numbered approximately 1,500 works, all deeply invested in the physicality and the discipline of dance.Through illustrations of Foyer de la Danse (1872), Musicians in the Orchestra (1872) and many more, this book provides an essential overview of the artist who resisted categorization but created a category of his own, a world of classical resonance, bold compositions, and an endless fascination with movement, which together produced some of the most striking and influential works of the era.About the series: Each book in TASCHEN s Basic Art series features: a detailed chronological summary of the life and oeuvre of the artist, covering his or her cultural and historical importance a concise biography approximately 100 illustrations with explanatory captions"
    9783836535106 Manet (Basic Art) Taschen
A fresh look: Pivotal paintings of modernityLampooned during his lifetime for his style as much as his subject matter, French painterEdouard Manet (1832 1883) is now considered a crucial figure in the history of art, bridging the transition from Realism to Impressionism.Manet s work combined a painterly technique with strikingly modern images of contemporary life, centered on the urban Paris experience. He recorded the city s parks, bars, and cabarets, often delighting in the frisson of underground or provocative content. The Paris salon rejected his Dejeuner sur l herbe with its juxtaposition of fully dressed men and a nude woman, while the steady gaze and unabashed pose of the prostitute Olympia, a very modern reworking of Titian s Venus of Urbino, caused a society scandal. With rich illustration, this book introduces Manet s work and his uniquely influential combination of Realism, Impressionism, and reworked Old Masters that would become paradigms of a brave new world for generations of modernists to come.About the series: Each book in TASCHEN s Basic Art series features: a detailed chronological summary of the life and oeuvre of the artist, covering his or her cultural and historical importance a concise biography approximately 100 illustrations with explanatory captions"

Even though France is the birthplace of Impressionism, German artists also played a crucial role in shaping this style of painting. This book examines the work of the three great German painters of the late 19th and early 20th century: Max Liebermann, Lovis Corinth and Max Slevogt. Inspired by French artists such as Manet, Degas, Monet, Renoir and Cezanne as well as Van Gogh, Liebermann, Corinth and Slevogt, these German artists produced paintings that bore their own distinctive signatures, at once sensitive and forcefully expressive: Liebermann's paintings of his garden on Wannsee, Corinth's landscapes depicting the foothills of the Alps and the shores of Walchensee and the Neukastel county seat where Slevogt lived in the Rhenish Palatinate are world-famous. However, unfamiliar, even exotic and hitherto little known paintings as well as works by German contemporaries of the three painters are presented to provide interesting material for comparison and an intriguing new look at German Impressionist landscape painting.

400 years after the death of Caravaggio, some of the worlds most illustrious art historians comment on an extraordinary collection of 25 of his works. How is it possible that an artist who lived over four centuries ago is still seen today as an icon of modernity? The answer must be sought in his works; this is where we will grasp Caravaggios aesthetic pursuit. His is a simple, non ideal, art. He observed without prejudice, hewing close to the truth of things. In short, his was a revolutionary art, one which continues to fascinate laypeople and experts alike to this day. The curators of the exhibition, which will take place in Rome in the spring of 2010, asked some of the world's preeminent Caravaggio scholars to share their feeling and insights about their favorite works by the artist. The result is an original catalogue of great rigour yet expressed in deeply human and richly subjective tones.

A beautifully designed monograph surveying the works of the highly acclaimed contemporary photographer. Kennas photographs captivate viewers through their silent drama and magnetism: rather than being accurate descriptions of a place, the photographer seems interested in capturing the invisible lines which enclose space, and in so doing arousing a viewers imagination and reverie. Michael Kenna is an artist for whom the subject is above all the opportunity for a tremendous but constant variation in his view of the world.
