9780847839339 Pons-Sorolla Blanca Sorolla: The Masterworks Rizzoli
A new survey of the best works by the elusive and spectacular Spanish Impressionist Joaquin Sorolla. Often compared to his contemporary, the American artist John Singer Sargent, Joaquin Sorolla (1863-1923) was a master draftsman and painter of landscapes, formal portraits, and monumental, historically themed canvases. Highly influenced by French Impressionism, the Valencian artist was a master plein-air painter known for his luminous seaside scenes of frolicking youths and for vivid depictions of Spanish rural life and its pleasures and customs. This beautifully designed and produced volume brings together one hundred of Sorolla's major paintings, selected by his great-granddaughter Blanca Pons-Sorolla, the foremost authority on the artist. Benefiting from close proximity to the artist and his personal archives, she presents an in-depth essay that explores Sorolla's life, work, and remarkable international legacy. With virtually all of the artist's previous publications now out of print, this much-anticipated volume is an important addition to the literature on this great Spanish master.

9781781310403 Banksy: The Man Behind the Wall Littlehampton
For someone who shuns the limelight so completely that he conceals his name, never shows his face and gives interviews only by email, Banksy is remarkably famous.
From his beginnings as a Bristol graffiti artist, his artwork is now sold at auction for six-figure sums and hangs on celebrities’ walls. The appearance of a new Banksy is national news, his documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop was Oscar-nominated and people queue for hours to see his latest exhibition. Now more National Treasure than edgy outsider, who is Banksy and how did he become what he is today?
In the first attempt to tell the full story of Banksy’s life and career, Will Ellsworth-Jones pieces together a picture of his world and unpicks its contradictions. Whether art or vandalism, anti-establishment or sell-out, Banksy and his work have become a cultural phenomenon and the question ‘Who is Banksy?’ is as much about his career as it is ‘the man behind the wall’.

Daniel Kahneman, recipient of the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for his seminal work in psychology that challenged the rational model of judgment and decision making, is one of our most important thinkers. His ideas have had a profound and widely regarded impact on many fields--including economics, medicine, and politics--but until now, he has never brought together his many years of research and thinking in one book.
In the highly anticipated "Thinking, Fast and Slow," Kahneman takes us on a groundbreaking tour of the mind and explains the two systems that drive the way we think. System 1 is fast, intuitive, and emotional; System 2 is slower, more deliberative, and more logical. Kahneman exposes the extraordinary capabilities--and also the faults and biases--of fast thinking, and reveals the pervasive influence of intuitive impressions on our thoughts and behavior. The impact of loss aversion and overconfidence on corporate strategies, the difficulties of predicting what will make us happy in the future, the challenges of properly framing risks at work and at home, the profound effect of cognitive biases on everything from playing the stock market to planning the next vacation--each of these can be understood only by knowing how the two systems work together to shape our judgments and decisions.
Engaging the reader in a lively conversation about how we think, Kahneman reveals where we can and cannot trust our intuitions and how we can tap into the benefits of slow thinking. He offers practical and enlightening insights into how choices are made in both our business and our personal lives--and how we can use different techniques to guard against the mental glitches that often get us into trouble. "Thinking, Fast and Slow" will transform the way you think about thinking.

9780988174528 Boza Ivanovic Out Of Wild Zoo Portraits ACC-distribution titles
Zoos work to preserve nature, protecting animals from the encroaching human presence in their native environments. Cages and glass - these barriers exist to protect both the animals and the visitors. Photographer Boza Ivanovic, however, artfully transforms this dynamic in his latest book, 'Out of the Wild: Zoo Portraits'. His photographs pull viewers past protective boundaries, reinstating a sensation of awe and even fear. Here, zoo animals appear as they do in nature - without the perceived safety of barriers. As a result of his careful presentation, Ivanovic inspires a tension in his viewers. These animals are at once as terrifying as they are hauntingly beautiful. They emerge from the darkness or swoop gracefully toward the lens. Ivanovic's carefully crafted images restore the majesty of these creatures, revealing that there is still a wild spirit in these animals' hearts - whether in the wild or out.

The delicate beauty of the cashmere shawl was first brought to Europe by the East India Companies and Napoleons campaigns. Woven in Kashmir, its fabric was so light that, according to legend, a whole shawl could be passed through a finger ring. Exquisite and expensive, by the 19th century these shawls were highly sought-after in France; enterprising French manufacturers soon saw that there was a market for more accessibly priced versions and started to create their own. This revised edition of Monique Levi-Strausss classic book on French cashmere shawls, originally published in 1987, features more than 250 illustrations of these beautiful garments, superbly photographed to showcase their splendid original designs, alongside a wealth of archive material and contemporary paintings that show them being worn by their elegant owners. This treasure trove of shawls will not only delight textile scholars and costume historians but appeal to anyone who loves beautiful accessories.

9781419708527 The Art of Rube Goldberg: A) Inventive B) Cartoon C) Genius Abrams
Rube Goldberg was a cartoonist, humorist, sculptor, author, engineer and inventor, and in a 72-year career he illustrated a staggering, record number of cartoons--50,000. Rube Goldberg (1883-1970) was the most famous cartoonist and humorist of his time, possibly of all time. He worked in just about every medium, starting out as a vaudeville entertainer, hosting his own radio show, his own television program, created his own animated cartoons, wrote screenplays, short stories, poems and a novel.
Known primarily for his cartoon inventions which were syndicated in daily newspapers throughout the world, Rube described his machines as a "symbol of man's capacity for exerting maximum effort to achieve minimal results," and believed most people went about things the hard way rather than using a more simple and direct path to accomplish their goals. The Art of Rube Goldberg is being created with complete access to the vast archives held at the Library of Congress, the Bancroft Library in the University of California, Berkeley and the Estate, and includes an overview of his entire career, from his very first drawing at age twelve to his later sculptures, as well as his iconic inventions and Pulitzer Prize-winning political cartoons. Also included are rare photographs, letters, memorabilia and patents, many reproduced here for the first time.
Rube Goldberg also wrote multiple autobiographical essays throughout his career and was extensively interviewed in the press and on radio and television. The Art of Rube Goldberg will include copious extracts from these primary sources so we can read about Rube in his own words. Also included are essays by noted comic historians, each with a unique take on Rube Goldberg and each writing about a different aspect of his varied career.
Brilliantly designed and packaged to capture the inventiveness of Rube Goldberg's work, The Art of Rube Goldberg is a coffee table book for die-hard fans, casual fans and fans of all ages

Five linked families live out their destinies as the world is shaken by tyranny and war in the mid-twentieth century. Berlin in 1933 is in upheaval. Eleven-year-old Carla von Ulrich struggles to understand the tensions disrupting her family as Hitler strengthens his grip on Germany. Into this turmoil steps her mother's formidable friend and former British MP, Ethel Leckwith, and her student son, Lloyd, who soon learns for himself the brutal reality of Nazism. He also encounters a group of Germans resolved to oppose Hitler - but are they willing to go so far as to betray their country? Such people are closely watched by Volodya, a Russian with a bright future in Red Army Intelligence. The international clash of military power and personal beliefs that ensues will sweep over them all as it rages from Cable Street in London's East End to Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, from Spain to Stalingrad, from Dresden to Hiroshima. At Cambridge Lloyd is irresistibly drawn to dazzling American socialite Daisy Peshkov, who represents everything his left-wing family despise. But Daisy is more interested in aristocratic Boy Fitzherbert - amateur pilot, party lover and leading light of the British Union of Fascists. Back in Berlin, Carla worships golden boy Werner from afar. But nothing will work out the way they expect as their lives and the hopes of the world are smashed by the greatest and cruellest war in the history of the human race. "Winter of the World" is the second novel in Ken Follett's uniquely ambitious and deeply satisfying trilogy "The Century". On its own or read in sequence with "Fall of Giants", this is a magnificent, spellbinding epic of global conflict and personal drama.

9781618930040 People Remembering Whitney Houston: A Tribute Hachette Book Group
HER’S WAS A SKYROCKET OF A LIFE, a tale of beauty, soaring talent, and the risks of stardom.
Whitney Houston was born to sing: Her mom, Cissy Houston,
is a noted gospel singer; Dionne Warwick was her cousin, soul great Aretha Franklin her aunt. And she was beautiful: Before she ever had a big radio hit, a teenage Whitney was booking modeling gigs in major magazines. Legendary talent guru Clive Davis heard her sing in a club and signed her at at 19; her first album, Whitney Houston, spawned three No. 1 hits and made her a staple on MTV. Seven years later, The Bodyguard made her a movie star.
But at the height of an almost-unprecedented arc, something
went wrong. Marriage to singer Bobby Brown coincided with a slip from the pinnacle; soon Houston was missing shows, behaving erratically and, eventually, admitting to drug problems. A comeback had started to gain traction—until, the night before the 2012 Grammy Awards, the 48-year-old star was found dead, of unspecified causes, in her Beverly Hills hotel room.
Packed with photos and insight, People: Remembering Whitney looks back on wonder, and drama, of aremarkable life.

Marc Riboud traveled the world recording the harmony of landscapes and the beauty in faces from Angkor to Istanbul, India to Bangladesh, and New York to China. From a painter poised like a dancer on the metal girders of the Eiffel Tower to a young woman bravely facing down a rank of riflemen in protest against the Vietnam War, Ribouds photographs reveal his deep insight into humanity, his compassion for the human struggle, and an insatiable desire to understand the plights, triumphs, and daily life of others. While many of his photographs depict the anguish of war, others catch the evanescent delight of a swim in a sun-dappled river or children learning to whistle in a Shanghai street. An exhibition of Ribouds photography will open at New Yorks Rubin Museum on October 17, 2014.

Presented here with an introduction to the topic and individual texts on each piece, these diverse works are organized chronologically and by stylistic movements to highlight the hidden histories of these works.

9780500252130 Boardman, John The Greeks in Asia Thames & Hudson
This book, by Britains most distinguished historian of ancient Greek art, recounts the influence of Greek communities and their culture through Central Asia, India and Western China, from the Bronze Age through to the rise of Islam. Boardman examines a wealth of art and artifacts as well as literary sources to reveal the remarkable influence of Greek culture upon peoples Anatolians, Levantines, Persians, Asiatics, Indians, Chinese whose settled civilizations were far older, with their own strong traditions in life, government and the arts. The Greeks were not empire-builders. They did not seek to conquer or rule. However, they were highly literate and adept at trade; they spread a monetary economy through Eurasia; their religion was easily adapted to that of others; their art developed a form of narrative that was to be dominant for centuries to come; and their poets and philosophers were widely respected outside their homeland. As Boardman notes, They are an odd phenomenon in world history. Through their travels they came to leave a very distinctive imprint on the lives and arts of many distant peoples, and over centuries, some to the present day'.

9781118469798 Franklin B. Saksena Patient Studies in Valvular, Congenital and Rarer Forms of Cardiovascular Disease: An Integrative Approach Wiley
A number of cardiology training programs emphasize coronary artery disease whilst neglecting other aspects of cardiology such as valvular, congenital heart or vascular disease. This book attempts to redress this imbalance by reiterating the importance of history and physical findings in detecting valvular, congenital or vascular disease and to correlate the clinical findings to invasive and non–invasive studies. This approach will be useful to cardiologists in training particularly those sitting the Cardiology Board examinations, where recognition of auscultatory findings is now a requirement, and those with an interest in problem solving. Each of the 90+ patient studies follows a templated design and consists of: history, physical examination, phonocardiography (whenever possible), ECG, Chest X–ray, echocardiography, hemodynamics, and, sometimes, angiography. These sections may or may not be randomized and readers are challenged to write an interpretation on each section as well as answering self–test questions posed in the legends. Patient studies have been arranged in approximately chronological order from 1966–2013 with emphasis on establishing a likely diagnosis based on the available tools then in existence. Test your problem solving skills, improve your knowledge, and prepare for Boards, with this collection of unusual and challenging patient studies focused on the physical diagnosis of cardiovascular disease. This book: Contains over 90 case histories with self–test questions designed to test the reader s knowledge and also reinforce clinical best practices Focuses on diseases of valvular, vascular or congenital origin, and on comparatively rare disorders/diseases, rather than coronary artery disease, to help readers improve their skills at interpreting and making decisions based on physical examination and basic, non–invasive imaging modalities Pairs each with original materials – e.g. x–rays, echocardiograms, lab reports, charts so that readers can work through their diagnosis using the same information as the physician who treated the patient originally

9783836560009 Dali (Basic Art) Taschen
Painter, sculptor, writer, film-maker, and all-round showman Salvador Dali (1904 1989)was one of the twentieth century s greatest exhibitionists and eccentrics. One of the first artists to apply the insights of Freudian psychoanalysis to art, he is celebrated in particular for his surrealist practice, with such conceits as the soft watches or the lobster telephone, now hallmarks of the surrealist enterprise, and of modernism in general.
Dali frequently described his paintings as hand-painted dream photographs. Their tantalizing tension and interest resides in the precise rendering of bizarre elements and incongruous arrangements. As Dali himself explained, he painted with the most imperialist fury of precision, but only to systematize confusion and thus to help discredit completely the world of reality.
Revolutionizing the role of the artist, the mustache-twirling Dali also had the intuition to parade a controversial persona in the public arena and, through printmaking, fashion, advertising, writing, and film, to create work that could be consumed and not just contemplated on a gallery wall.
This book explores both the painting and the personality of Dali, introducing his technical skill as well as his provocative compositions and challenging themes of death, decay, and eroticism.
9783836560283 Gaudi (Basic Arch) Taschen
From the towering Sagrada Familia to the shimmering, textured facade of Casa Batllo and the enchanting landscape of Park Guell, it s easy to see why Antoni Gaudi (1852 1926) gained the epithet God s architect . With fluid forms and mathematical precision, his work extols the wonder of natural creation: columns soar like tree trunks, window frames curve like flowering branches, and ceramic tiling shimmers like scaly, reptilian skin.
With this outstanding attention to natural detail, his inspirations from both neo-Gothic and Orientalist aesthetics, and a lifelong commitment to Catalan identity, Gaudi created a unique brand of the Modernista movement which transformed, and defines, Barcelona s cityscape.
With seven of Gaudi s projects listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, this book introduces the architect s extraordinary vision and unique legacy, exploring the influences and the details which allow his buildings to impress, inspire, and amaze, one century after their construction.
9783836500852 Kahlo (Basic Art) Taschen
The arresting pictures of Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) were in many ways expressions of trauma. Through a near-fatal road accident at the age of 18, failing health, a turbulent marriage, miscarriage and childlessness, she transformed the afflictions into revolutionary art.
In literal or metaphorical self-portraiture, Kahlo looks out at the viewer with an audacious glare, rejecting her destiny as a passive victim and rather intertwining expressions of her experience into a hybrid surreal-real language of living: hair, roots, veins, vines, tendrils and fallopian tubes. Many of her works also explore the Communist political ideals which Kahlo shared with her husband Diego Rivera. The artist described her paintings as the most sincere and real thing that I could do in order to express what I felt inside and outside of myself.
This book introduces a rich body of Kahlo s work to explore her unremitting determination as an artist, and her significance as a painter, feminist icon, and a pioneer of Latin American culture.

A mystifying group of carpets and tapestries created along the Silk Route over five hundred years ago is the topic of this richly illustrated book. The carpets and tapestries with riveting yet puzzling designs have been preserved in closed treasure houses in the former Japanese capital since the fourteenth to fifteenth centuries. They are brought out only one day a year for a Shinto-Buddhist festival procession and quickly returned to storage. This book is about their shrouded origin in China, the pariahs who wove them, the meaning of their obscure motifs, and the reasons for the secrecy continuing to surround their exhibition.
Early Carpets and Tapestries on the Eastern Silk Road is written by Gloria Granz Gonick, Art Historian and Research Associate at The Fowler Museum at UCLA, former Guest Curator for Matsuri Japanese Festival Arts, and former Museum Curator for the Los Angeles Craft and Folk Art Museum. She has studied the collections and their intriguing past over the past two decades during multiple research visits to China and Japan. The sites in Asia where the carpets and tapestries were created centuries ago, and over two hundred exemplary artworks have been photographed in color, and documented for this fascinating volume.

The items in this thematically structured book demonstrate Deco style at its most alluring. They were then the height of fashion, and are highly prized collectibles today. They demonstrate an era of close cooperation between designers and manufacturers, who aimed to produce goods that were not only fit for purpose, but also well made and beautiful. This informative showcase of portable classics of avant-garde modern design from Britain, Europe (particularly France) and the United States will appeal both to collectors and to anyone with an interest in Deco style and the history of fashion, taste and design. |9781628920697 Ellis Cashmore Elizabeth Taylor: A Private Life for Public Consumption Bloomsbury Academic |
The first volume to examine the iconic Elizabeth Taylor in this light, Elizabeth Taylor: A Private Life for Public Consumption paints Taylor as the seminal representation of “celebrity.” A figure of enormous charisma and cultural sway, she intrigued a global audience with her marriages and extra-marital improprieties, as well as her extravagant jewelry, her never-ending illnesses, her dependency on alcohol, and her perplexing friendship with Michael Jackson. Despite her continued world-renown, however, most people would be hard-pressed to name even three of her films, though she made over seventy. Ellis Cashmore traces our modern, hyperactive celebrity culture back to a single instant in Taylor’s life: the publicizing of her scandalous affair with Richard Burton by photographer Marcelo Geppetti in 1962, which announced the arrival of a new generation of predatory photojournalists and, along with them, a strange conflation between the public and private lives of celebrities. Taylor’s life and public reception, Cashmore reveals, epitomizes the modern phenomenon of “celebrity.”

James Ensor (1860–1949) produced one of the most unusual bodies of work at the turn of the twentieth century. Marked by psychological complexity, contradictions and sheer eccentricity, his works – featuring such bizarre subject-matter as dressed-up skeletons and macabre carnival masks – have continued to baffle and intrigue in equal measure. Ensor was born in Ostend and barely left his home town during his lifetime; his family, however, ran a curio shop filled with an array of exotic objects including parrots, a monkey and masks from around the world, which perhaps in part influenced the imagery of his mature work. In this volume, essays explore Ensor’s life and legacy, while Luc Tuymans’s comments on his selection provide a dictinctive picture of James Ensor, who has been such a major influence on Expressionism and Surrealism.
9780500252185 Morbid Anatomy Museum The Anatomical Venus Thames & Hudson
Beneath the original Venetian glass and rosewood case at La Specola in Florence lies Clemente Susini’s Anatomical Venus (c. 1790), a perfect object whose luxuriously bizarre existence challenges belief. It – or, better, she – was conceived of as a means to teach human anatomy without need for constant dissection, which was messy, ethically fraught and subject to quick decay. This life-sized wax woman is adorned with glass eyes and human hair and can be dismembered into dozens of parts revealing, at the final remove, a beatific foetus curled in her womb. Sister models soon appeared throughout Europe, where they not only instructed the specialist students, but also delighted the general public. Deftly crafted dissectable female wax models and slashed beauties of the world’s anatomy museums and fairgrounds of the 18th and 19th centuries take centre stage in this disquieting volume. Since their creation in late 18th-century Florence, these wax women have seduced, intrigued and amazed. Today, they also confound, troubling the edges of our neat categorical divides: life and death, science and art, body and soul, effigy and pedagogy, spectacle and education, kitsch and art. Incisive commentary and captivating imagery reveal the evolution of these enigmatic sculptures from wax effigy to fetish figure and the embodiment of the uncanny.
9783836522304 Taschen Eugene Atget: Paris 1857-1927 (Bibliotheka Universalis) Taschen
Eugene Atget s unique city portrait
A flaneur and photographer at once, Eugene Atget (1857 1927) was obsessed with walking the streets. After trying his hand at painting and acting, the native of Libourne turned to photography and moved to Paris. He supplied studies for painters, architects, and stage designers, but became enraptured by what he called documents of the city and its environs. His scenes rarely included people, but rather the architecture, landscape, and artifacts that made up the societal and cultural stage.
Atget was not particularly renowned during his lifetime but in the 1920s came to the attention of the Dada and Surrealist avant-garde through Man Ray. Four of his images, with their particular fusion of mimesis and mystery, appeared in the surrealist journal, La Revolution Surrealiste, while Ray and much of his artistic circle purchased Atget prints. His fame grew after his death, with several articles and a monograph by Berenice Abbott. Several leading photographers, including Walker Evans and Bill Brandt, have since acknowledged their debt to Atget.
This fresh TASCHEN edition gathers some 500 photographs from the Atget archives to celebrate his oustanding eye for the urban environment and evocation of a Paris gone by. Down main streets and side streets, past shops and churches, through courtyards and arcades and the 20 arrondissements, we find a unique portrait of a beloved city and the making of a modern photographic master.
9783836552912 Kothenschulte Daniel The Walt Disney Film Archives: The Animated Movies 1921-1968 Taschen
The Master Magician
A fantastic voyage through Walt Disney s animation works
It s kind of fun to do the impossible.
One of the most creative minds of the 20th century, Walt Disney created a unique and unrivalled imaginative universe. Like scarcely any other classics of cinema, his astonishing collection of animated cartoons revolutionized storytelling on screen and enchant to this day across geographies and generations.
In TASCHEN s first volume of one of the most expansive illustrated publications on Disney animation, some 1,500 images and essays by eminent Disney experts take us to the beating heart of the studio s Golden Age of Animation . This landmark book traces Disney s complete animation journey from the silent film era, through his first full-length feature Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) and the pioneering artistic experiment Fantasia (1940), right up to his last masterpieces Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree (1966) and The Jungle Book (1967).
With extensive research conducted through the historical collections of The Walt Disney Company, as well as private collections, editor Daniel Kothenschulte curates some of the most precious concept paintings and storyboards to reveal just how these animation masterpieces came to life. Masterful cel setups provide highly detailed illustrations of famous film scenes while rare pictures taken by Disney photographers and excerpts from story conferences between Walt and his staff bring a privileged insider s view to the studio s creative process.
Each of the major animated features that were made during Walt s lifetime including Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo, Bambi, Cinderella, Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp, and One Hundred and One Dalmatians are given their own focus chapter, without forgetting less familiar gems such as the experimental short films of the Silly Symphonies series and underappreciated episodic musical films such as Make Mine Music and Melody Time, all of which receive the same meticulous research and attention. Many unfinished projects, among them the proposed sequels to the legendary musical Fantasia or a homage to Davy Crockett by painter Thomas Hart Benton, are also highlighted with rarely seen artworks, many of them previously unpublished. Throughout, the contributions from such leading Disney specialists as Leonard Maltin, Dave Smith, Charles Solomon, J. B. Kaufman, Russell Merritt, and Brian Sibley detail the evolution of each respective film.
Realizing the Disney style was a collective project and as much as the master himself, The Walt Disney Film Archives acknowledges the outstanding animators and designers who influenced the style of the studio, among them Albert Hurter, Gustaf Tenggren, Kay Nielsen, Carl Barks, Mary Blair, Sylvia Holland, Tyrus Wong, Ken Anderson, Eyvind Earle, and Walt Peregoy.

9780878468430 McBreen, Ellen Matisse in the Studio Thames & Hudson
This book is the first in English to explore the essential role that Henri Matisse’s personal collection of objects played in his studio practice. The artist traveled with his collection even to temporary residences, and letters to family members often included requests for objects to be moved to where he was working, revealing them to be critical creative stimulants. Featured frequently in the modern master’s bold paintings, drawings and cutouts, and influencing the development of his work in sculpture, Matisse’s objects formed a secret history hiding in plain sight.
Works that span Matisse’s entire career are presented here alongside the objects that inspired them, from Asian vases and African masks to intricate textiles from the Islamic world. An introduction and five chapters take readers through studies of the object as actor and the studio as theater, the importance of African art in Matisse’s renderings of the human form and his sitters’ inner selves, and the invention and transformation of his own language of signs. With lush illustrations and archival images, Matisse in the Studio provides exceptional insights into the artist at work.

9781408880722 Rowling J.K. Tales of Beedle the Bard Bloomsbury
Brand new edition of this collection of classic fairy tales from the wizarding world – an irresistible read for all Harry Potter fans. J.K. Rowling’s original text, with gorgeous jacket art by Jonny Duddle and line illustrations throughout by Tomislav Tomic. The Tales of Beedle the Bard have been favourite bedtime reading in wizarding households for centuries. Full of magic and trickery, these classic tales both entertain and instruct, and remain as captivating to young wizards today as they were when Beedle first put quill to parchment in the fifteenth century. There are five tales in all: 'The Tale of the Three Brothers' Harry Potter fans will know from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows; 'The Fountain of Fair Fortune', 'The Warlock's Hairy Heart', 'The Wizard and the Hopping Pot' and 'Babbitty Rabbitty and her Cackling Stump’ complete the collection. These narrative gems are accompanied by explanatory notes by Professor Albus Dumbledore (included by kind permission of the Hogwarts Headmaster’s archive). His illuminating thoughts reveal the stories to be much more than just simple moral tales, and are sure to make Babbitty Rabbitty and the slug-belching Hopping Pot as familiar to Muggles as Snow White and Cinderella.
The Tales of Beedle the Bard is published in aid of Lumos (wearelumos.org), an international children's charity (registered charity number 1112575) founded in 2005 by J.K Rowling. Lumos is dedicated ending the institutionalisation of children, a harmful practice that affects the lives of up to eight million disadvantaged children around the world who live in institutions and orphanages, many placed there as a result of poverty, disability, disease, discrimination and conflict; very few are orphans. Lumos works to reunite children with their families, promote family-based care alternatives and help authorities to reform their systems and close down institutions and orphanages.

9780500420577 Heller, Steven Type Tells Tales Thames & Hudson
An extensive collection of typographic compositions that celebrate the ability of letterforms to express narratives and voice.
Type Tells Tales focuses on typography that is integral to the message or story it is expressing. This is type that speaks - that is literally the voice of the narrator. And the narrator is the typographer. This can be quite literal, for example when letters come from the mouth of a person or thing, as in a comics balloon. It can be hand lettering, drawn with its own distinctive peculiarities that convey personality and mood. Precedents for contemporary work might be in Apollinaire's calligram 'Il pleut' or Kurt Schwitters' children's picture book 'The Scarecrow', or in Concrete Poetry, Futurist 'Words in Freedom' or Dadaist collage. Seeking out examples in the furthest reaches of graphic design, Steven Heller and Gail Anderson uncover work that reveals how type can be used to render a particular voice or multiple conversations, how letters can be used in various shapes and sizes to create a kind of typographic pantomime, and how type can become both content and illustration as in, for example Paul Rand's 'ROARRRRR'. Letters take the shape and form of other things, such as people, faces, animals, cars or planes. There are examples of how typographic blocks, paragraphs, sentences and blurbs can be used to guide the eye through dense information. This exciting, fresh take on typography goes far beyond the letter and word, exploding the boundaries of typographic expression. It will enthral designers and illustrators, wordsmiths and literati: anyone, in short, who loves the medium of the message.
9780500519332 Baty, Patrick The Anatomy of Colour: The Story of Heritage Paints & Pigments Thames & Hudson
A comprehensive and beautifully illustrated history of the paints and colours used over three centuries of interior decoration.
Why were primary colors popular in postwar kitchens? Why did the Art Deco era prefer clean lines and pastel shades? This comprehensive illustrated history of the use of color and paint in interior decoration answers these questions and many more.
Drawing on his huge specialist archive, historian and paint expert Patrick Baty traces the evolution of pigments and paint colors together with color systems and standards, and he examines their impact on the color palettes used in interiors from the 1650s to the 1960s. He charts the creation in paint of the common and expensive colors made from traditional earth pigments between 1650 and 1799. He then explores the emergence of color systems and standards and their influence on paint colors together with the effect of industrialized production on the texture and durability of paints. Finally, Baty turns his attention to twentieth-century color standards. Woven throughout the authoritative and revealing text are specially commissioned photographs of pages from rare color reference books.
Reproductions of interiors from home decor books, dating from every era, are included throughout, highlighting the distinctive color trends and styles of painting particular to each period.
1100 illustrations, 1000 in color

9788876246456 Beppe Finessi Fabio Novembre: Architecture Design Thames & Hudson
This artist book is the most comprehensive survey of Novembres interior architecture and product design. In little over a decade Fabio Novembre has made a name for himself with eye-candy interiors, spectacular installations, and lush yet functional product designs. Novembre is a solo voice in todays chorus of minimalism, creating interiors, furniture, designs, and installations by mixing old and new materials, setting the time zone between Byzantium and Blade Runner. Strong and eloquent, in no way humble or soft-spoken, his architecture is radically explicit and manifest. He interweaves the pleasures of living with high design seemingly with perfect ease to create environments as he himself experiences them: intensely, and on a vibrantly personal level. This book is a comprehensive survey of Novembres designs to date, including the Blumarine store in London, the S.O.S. chair, and his chaise lounge for Cappellinipoetic creations that stir the often-lazy territories of communication and contemporary design and set new markers to future courses for international design style.

9780486419251 Wilde Oscar The Canterville Ghost and Other Stories Dover
Renowned for his poetry, plays, essays, and conversational skills, Oscar Wilde also wrote delightfully entertaining works of short fiction. This volume contains four of his finest. Most celebrated is The Canterville Ghost, a delightfully comical tale centering around the ghost of Sir Simon de Canterville, who for some 300 years has terrorized the residents and employees of Canterville Chase. When the house is bought by the Otises, an American family that refuses to believe in such "supernatural" nonsense, hilarious results ensue. Also included here are "The Sphinx Without a Secret," about an enigmatic woman who carries the key to a mystery with her to the grave; "The Model Millionaire," the charming story of aelightful, ineffectual young man with a perfect profile and no profession"; as well as "Lord Arthur Savile's Crime." Rounding out the volume are Wilde's lyrical "Poems in Prose," including "The Artist," "The Doer of Good," "The Disciple," and 3 more. These diverting stories offer the wit, whimsy, and imaginative gusto of one of the 19th century's most scintillating masters of the English language.

9780099532538 Murakami Haruki What I Talk about When I Talk about Running Random House
In 1982, having sold his jazz bar to devote himself to writing, Murakami began running to keep fit. A year later, he'd completed a solo course from Athens to Marathon, and now, after dozens of such races, not to mention triathlons and a slew of critically acclaimed books, he reflects upon the influence the sport has had on his life and on his writing. Equal parts travelogue, training log, and reminiscence, this revealing memoir covers his four-month preparation for the 2005 New York City Marathon and settings ranging from Tokyo's Jingu Gaien gardens, where he once shared the course with an Olympian, to the Charles River in Boston among young women who outpace him. Through this marvellous lens of sport emerges a cornucopia of memories and insights: the eureka moment when he decided to become a writer, his greatest triumphs and disappointments, his passion for vintage LPs, and the experience, after fifty, of seeing his race times improve and then fall back. By turns funny and sobering, playful and philosophical.

9780486418131 Ashdown Mrs. Charles H. British Costume from Earliest Times to 1820 Dover
Unlike many more recent costume histories, this hard-to-find classic drew on primary sources - actual costumes, illuminated manuscripts, missals, brasses, effigies, etc. - for absolute authenticity in providing a detailed, comprehensive account of what people wore in Britain from the early Saxon period (ca. 460 A.D.) through the reign of George III (1820). Here is meticulous, detailed coverage of tunics, cloaks, gowns, robes, mantles, dresses, and many other garments, as well as headgear, footwear, and accessories, worn during the fifth century, the early medieval period and Plantagenet reign, the time of the Tudors, the Elizabethan era, and through the early years of the house of Hanover. Over 470 illustrations chronicle the evolution of clothing styles - from the simple robes, boots, and mittens worn by the lower classes, to the sartorial splendor of royalty and the specialized clothing and accoutrements of ecclesiastics. Among a host of charming illustrations are portrayals of revelers attending a medieval dance, strolling minstrels, a royal picnic during the late 15th century, and numerous other vignettes. Artists, students of fashion and design, cultural historians, and anyone interested in the history of fashion will find this rare volume an invaluable resource.

9789040084461 Painting Family: The De Brays ACC-distribution titles
Jan De Bray and his father Salomon are the greatest history painters that Haarlem ever produced. The two artists also determined the face of Harleem
Classicism. Both Salomon and Jan were universally gifted, not only as painters but also as architects, poets and art theorists.
It is small wonder that Salomon - just like the
slightly younger Pieter de Grebber - was commsissioned to decorate Paleis Huis ten Bosch that Amalia van Solms had built in honor of her recently deceased husband Frederik
Hendrik.Jan carried out many commissions for Haarlem's governing nobility, including three mantel paintings for the town hall and several regent portraits for various Haarlem institutions.
The artist was an eminent portrait painter and following Frans Hals' death became the favored portraitist of Haarlem's elite. Many of his clients had themselves portrayed in the guise of a
biblical or mythological figure for a so called portrait historie,
a genre in which Jan excelled.
His brothers Dirck and Joseph were active as still-life painters.

Cassie is nothing if not organised. A successful journalist, she's ticked almost all the boxes: attentive boyfriend, own flat, good job, great friends...it's all fallen into place. In theory, at least. There's one part of Cassie's life, however, which is anything but organised, and that's her love for the Darling family. As the only child of ambitious parents, Cassie spent her childhood abandoned to the somewhat peremptory care of a series of nannies until one day, peeping over the garden wall, she met her nextdoor neighbours: Fritz and Ben, the boys who became her inseparable childhood friends, Gudrun, their father, and Phoebe Darling, the woman who took Cassie in and transformed her life. But now Phoebe is ill, and when she summons Cassie to ask of her the only favour she's ever requested, Cassie knows she can't say no. But what Phoebe asks is an impossibility: concerned about what will happen to Fritz and Ben after her death, she wants to see them safely married off. Yet entertaining as they were as children, they're terrible as adults. They're utterly charming, ridiculously sexy and completely irresistible, but they're also totally unemployable, hopelessly messy and irretrieva

9780847834174 Krakoff Reed Mattia Bonetti. Reed Krakoff Rizzoli USA
The first comprehensive monograph on the limited-edition creations by Mattia Bonetti, a trailblazer bridging the gap between art and design. Highly beloved and collected by forward-looking tastemakers—Christian Lacroix, Philip Johnson, David Whitney, and Reed Krakoff, among others—Mattia Bonetti’s seductive designs have been accessible only to the privileged few, until now. Quirky, poetic, colorful, and exquisitely crafted, Bonetti’s works hover between function and quixotic form, evocative of history but not tied to any school of art or design. This volume collects Bonetti’s limited-edition furniture designs throughout his thirty-year career, through photography by Krakoff in residential interiors, galleries, and Bonetti’s workshop; revealing color sketches; and dramatic black-and-white portraits of Bonetti and his team of craftsmen. Comprehensive in scope, Mattia Bonetti shows for the first time the whimsical world of this highly acclaimed Swiss-born, Paris-based designer. Essays by Gloria von Thurn und Taxis, Marie-Laure Jousset, and Jacques Grange, as well as a provocative conversation with Adrian Dannatt, further illuminate Bonetti’s playful synthesis of opposites and insightful use of naturalism and modernism across art and design.

9783836563109 Publishing Little Nemo by Winsor McCay: A Life of Imaginative Genius Taschen
Little Nemo may be a diminutive hero of comic narrative but he sure stands tall as one of the greatest voyagers of the 20th century. The master creation of Winsor McCay (1869–1934), this small and restless sleeper inspired generations of artists with his weekly adventures from bed to Slumberland, a dream realm of colorful companions, elaborate architecture, psychedelic scenery, and thrilling adventures.
Winsor McCay’s Little Nemo 1905–1909 collects, in glorious full color, all 220 of Nemo’s nocturnal escapades from the period 1905 to 1909. Through them, we delight not only in the splendor of Slumberland, a surreal benchmark for Robert Crumb and Federico Fellini, but also McCay’s pioneering panel layout and storytelling techniques, his timing and pacing, and extraordinary architectural detail.
In the accompanying 150-page illustrated essay, art historian and comics expert Alexander Braun places Winsor McCay’s life and work within the cultural history of the U.S. media and entertainment industry, and explores the immense art historical significance of McCay’s dream narrative. At once an adventure story, visual delight, and piece of cultural history, this publication is a tremendous monument to one of the most innovative pioneers—and one of the most intrepid explorers—of comic history.

Newly married protagonists, Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam Darcy, defends their village from an army of flesh-eating unmentionables. But the honeymoon has barely begun when poor Mr Darcy is nipped by a raging dreadful. Elizabeth knows the only acceptable course of action is to promptly behead her husband (and then burn the corpse, just to be safe).
