9781857095449 Mazzotta Titian - A Fresh Look at Nature Yale University Press
Titian is acknowledged as the greatest of the sixteenth-century Venetian painters, best known for his portraits, mythological pictures and religious subjects. Yet his first great achievement as a painter, schooled in the workshop of Giovanni Bellini, was to refashion the portrayal of nature in his own distinctive style by studying the work of Albrecht Durer, whose naturalistic paintings of plants, animals and landscape - for which northern European artists were renowned - had caused a sensation in Venice in the first decade of the sixteenth century.
In this short, beautifully illustrated book, Antonio Mazzotta presents this experience, together with Titian's native landscape of Pievedi Cadore, as crucial influences in the artist's early representation of nature. The recently restored Flight into Egypt (now in the Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg) - probably painted when Titian was still a teenager - is vivid proof of his interest in the depiction of animals, plants and figures in the landscape. The author's carefully chosen comparisons of paintings, prints, drawings and details of works by the young Titian, Durer and their contemporaries (including Sebastiano del Piombo and Giorgione) suggest that Titian was as innovative and as influential in his unique view of nature as he was in portraiture.

Berthe Morisot (1841-1895) was a woman of extraordinary talent who carved for herself a career within the art world of nineteenth-century Paris. She was one of only a handful of women who exhibited with both the Paris Salon and the influential and innovative Impressionists. Her work, considered highly representative of the Impressionist movement, depicts the world of the bourgeoise: their clothes, their life-style, their surroundings and their relationships. Through her unusual talent, the everyday life of the nineteenth-century bourgeoisie becomes tangible. In this beautiful book, around one hundred paintings from museums and private collections around the world are reproduced full-page and in colour, accompanied by original commentaries, which follow the artist's career from her training with Corot to her final work. The book examines her subtle, refined artistry, focused on the theme of women and children, and her use of pastel colours that recalls Watteau, Boucher and Fragonard. Her life and personality are discussed in detail, and the originality of her art - through its themes and technique - is highlighted, revealing its influence and its links with that of such illustrious contemporaries as Monet and Renoir. The exhibition that this book accompanies is the first retrospective of Morisot's work to be held in Paris for nearly half a century.

Alessandro Mendini, born in Milan in 1931, is a major theorist and a driving force behind avant-garde design in Italy. Aside from his artistic career, he was also editor of the architecture magazines Casabella and Modo and publisher of the famous 'Domus' magazine. Considered to be one of the most important contemporary designers in Europe, Mendini's work places an emphasis on cultural diversity and radical expression. He has also produced many collective projects, such as the museum in Groningen, Netherlands, built with Philippe Starck, Frank Stella, and Michele de Lucchi. He has also worked with important Italian and foreign firms as Zanotta, Alessi, Swatch, Philips, Venini, Bisazza and Cartier. Published in the same style as the successful 'Minimum Architects' series, the 'Minimum Design' series includes books about the major figures in the field of design, creators of objects that have become a part of our daily lives. The lamp on our desk, the chair we are sitting on or the glasses we are wearing have a genius behind to be discovered. These volumes will introduce in a practical manner the personalities and the works of the world's major designers by way of an historical-critical introduction to the work and life of each individual designer. An accurate selection of the designer's most famous objects arranged in chronological order and a critique of his or her work summarsing the most significant reviews published in magazines and newspapers will complete the subject.

In Fashion Icons, Leen Demeester explores fashion trends throughout the centuries. She traces the origins of items of clothing such as the corset, the bra, the dress, the mini-skirt, trousers, accessories and high heels. These 'icons' show a distinct parallel between the history of women's appearance and the history of female emancipation. Top designers confirm that the image of a woman (and her place in society) still depends on her appearance and especially on the clothes she wears.

Eight French painters born after 1870 are brought together for the first time in
an exhibition that highlights their mutual affinities and charts their respective
influences and evolutions.
Aside from Gaston Balande (1880-1971), who is well known for his art deco wall
murals designed for transatlantic ships, and Paul Deltombe (1878-1971), who
benefited from a retrospective exhibition in 1970, the work of the other painters
collected here has remained uncelebrated for far too long. The present exhibition
and its catalogue aim to repair this oversight, as well as to reignite the study of this
generation of French painters who, without turning their back on the avant-gardists,
concentrated primarily on the traditional genre of landscape, and to a lesser degree
The 80 works of art, mainly painted between the wars, are at the crossroads of the
many influences of this creative period, where tradition and the avant-garde blended
together without restraint.
This syncretism is frequently illustrated by landscapes where the diversity reflects
the search for new effects and beautiful themes as well as an appetite for travel and
discoveries. This panorama of Douce France signals the last breath for this pictorial
style that was the inheritor and continuation of the Impressionist movement –a status that was bound to be lost forever after the Second World War.

Human alter-reality. The essential overview of Neo Rauch's art. Bursting with radiant and unsettling juxtapositions, Neo Rauch's paintings are wormholes into worlds of startling psychological power and cultural collisions. His scenes involve the viewer in a history that is at once mythic, intimate, and present. Through a deep consideration of philosophy, art history, literature, and his own dreamscape, Rauch's paintings depict the precipices of progress and the struggles of communication. Electrified by their rich palettes, Rauch's fragmented landscapes and timeless characters dance between pop and baroque, social and psychological, graphic and painterly. Born in Leipzig in 1960, Rauch learned his trade behind the Iron Curtain. His influences and interests were shaped by personal hardship and the tumultuous changes of East Germany after the Wall fell. In the late 1980s, having finished his studies at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig under Arno Rink and Bernhard Heisig, he explored diverse approaches to painting in dialogue with works he encountered by Francis Bacon, the New Wild painters, and the pre-Renaissance painters he saw during his travels in Italy. By 1993, he had arrived at the unique style of intertwining figuration and abstraction that characterizes his oeuvre and has brought him international attention and respect. This monograph is the most inclusive collection of Rauch's work to date. It offers a generous range of his writings that illuminate the personal, symbolic, and formal complexities of world. Wolfgang Buscher's open and sensitive account of a walk through Rauch's neighborhood reveals the painter's compassion and modesty. Harald Kunde tracks Rauch's stylistic development through its main semantic threads and historical influences. Gary Tinterow draws from his work on Rauch's exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum to offer the reader a guide to the symbols that form the painter's extensive mythology. These essays complement Rauch's work with nuanced insights while allowing the images room to speak on their own. Within this atlas, readers will discover the rich density and enigmatic openness of Rauch's paintings. This is the unlimited edition based on the limited first edition.

9781107676985 Billig Learn to Write Badly Cambridge Academ
Modern academia is increasingly competitive yet the writing style of social scientists is routinely poor and continues to deteriorate. Are social science postgraduates being taught to write poorly? What conditions adversely affect the way they write? And which linguistic features contribute towards this bad writing? Michael Billig's witty and entertaining book analyses these questions in a quest to pinpoint exactly what is going wrong with the way social scientists write. Using examples from diverse fields such as linguistics, sociology and experimental social psychology, Billig shows how technical terminology is regularly less precise than simpler language. He demonstrates that there are linguistic problems with the noun-based terminology that social scientists habitually use - 'reification' or 'nominalization' rather than the corresponding verbs 'reify' or 'nominalize'. According to Billig, social scientists not only use their terminology to exaggerate and to conceal, but also to promote themselves and their work.

9783899554663 Rock the Shack: Architecture of Cabins, Cocoons and Hide-outs Gestalten
Rock the Shack takes us to the places we long for. For the first time in the history of humankind, more people live in cities than in the country. Yet, at the same time, more and more city dwellers are yearning for rural farms, mountain cabins, or seaside homes. These kinds of refuges offer modern men and women a promise of what urban centers usually cannot provide: quiet, relaxation, being out of reach, getting back to basics, feeling human again.
Rock the Shack is a survey of such contemporary refuges from around the world—from basic to luxury. The book features a compelling range of sparingly to intricately furnished cabins, cottages, second homes, tree houses, transformations, shelters, and cocoons. The look of the included structures from the outside is just as important as the view from inside. What these diverse projects have in common is an exceptional spirit that melds the uniqueness of a geographic location with the individual character of the building’s owner and architect.

Anyone who grew up holidaying on England's beaches is familiar with the distinctive features of these historic resorts - not the exclusive, paradisiacal haunts of the rich and famous, but the gritty, often rocky shores of the Atlantic and the Irish and North Seas, filled with amusement arcades, bathing huts, beach umbrellas and people of all ages and classes. Jon Nicholson's Polaroid SX70 is the perfect vehicle to capture the colour and character of summers at the sea. At once immediate and ephemeral, these delicately hued, slightly muted images taken with original, out-of-date film stock depict the faded glory of Yarmouth's giant piers, Brighton's pebbly shores, the Blackpool Pleasure Beach amusement park, the dunes of Hemsby, and many other resorts across Britain. Each of the 70 photographs is beautifully reproduced on its own page with descriptive captions. A foreword by Joseph Galliano provides a wry, contemporary perspective on these beloved, centuries-old locations.

Views of the Edwardian era have swung between seeing the period as a golden summer afternoon of imperial and elite complacency and the starkly conflicting depiction of the decade as one of intense political, economic, and artistic instability leading up to the chasm of the First World War. This magnificent book explores themes of power and a contrasting lightness of touch through the distinctive architecture, interiors, and decorative and fine arts of the time. Creation, consumption, and display are enlightened through portraits by Sargent and Boldoni, diamond tiaras and ostrich feather fans, and a spectacular embroidered gown belonging to Mary, the American-born wife of Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India. At the same time, the Lumiere brothers' invention of autochromes enabled informal colour portrait photography that fostered the cult of celebrity. Opulence and leisure were driving forces for the domestic and imperial British economic engine in the early years of the twentieth century.

Sanderson and Boyer invite you to imagine what Manhattan would have looked like to its early explorers; before the skyscrapers, before the crowded sidewalks and the busy intersections of avenues and streets. On the pages of Mannahatta, Sanderson and Boyer take readers on a journey of imagination by geographically matching, or georeferencing, a historical British Headquarts map with a map of modern Manhattan. In addition, Sanderson examined volumes of historical documents and journals and was able to visually reconstruct, down to the city block, what Manhattan looked like four hundred years ago; from the forests of Times Square, to the wetlands of downtown, the meadows of Harlem and the Upper West Side, and the nomadic tribe settlements of Chinatown and the Upper East Side. Although the lush forests, rolling hills, and flowing streams have long disappeared, Mannahatta: A Natural History of New York City brings this wild island of Henry Hudson's era to life through insightful text, maps, illustrations and computer visualisations. This book is not only a view of the past, but also an inspiration for a new vision of the future.

While A. Quincy Jones is most recognised as an architect of glamorous homes owned by Los Angeles' cultural elite, he was equally dedicated to less prosperous clients - middle-class families who were quickly populating the postwar Southern California landscape. As this fascinating book reveals, Jones and his collaborators were truly ahead of their time. Their vision of creating affordable, sophisticated and aesthetically pleasing structures prefigured the advent of several important architectural trends such as innovative and sustainable building designs, maximization of available space, careful detailing, and sensitive site planning. Filled with images from noted photographer Jason Schmidt, as well as with period photographs by Julius Shulman and others, this volume looks at every aspect of Jones' career. Original drawings, models, and furniture designs from the architect's personal archives illustrate a wide variety of projects featuring the hallmarks of Jones' style: soaring interior spaces, the blurring of indoor and outdoor spaces, laminated timber construction, angled walls, and innovate use of concrete, redwood, and glass. Essays explore Jones' quintessentially collaborative nature as he consulted with other noted architects, landscapers, interior designers, developers and city planners to create buildings of lasting beauty and importance.

No other graffiti crew from New York Citys graffiti heyday conjures up more images of angel dust-smoking, beer-drinking, "crazy white boys," than the Bronx-born-and-bred writing group Morris Park Crew (MPC). This official history of the crew tells the stories behind the group with never-before-published photos, oral histories from MPC members, and details on the 2009-2010 MPC revival. Starting in 1977, when founding members Slip, Wedge, and Speed started the crew, this account continues with details of how Cap 1 took over and led the crew down its unforgettable path in the 1980s. With a penchant for going to war with rival graffiti crews for train space and territory, which in turn led to the largest city-wide cross-out campaign, the MPC was known as a bunch of thugs who beat, hung, and shot perceived rivals and a group of talent-less "toys." Wrapped up in this raw tell-all about the bad boys of NYC graffiti, are not just accounts of the crews passion for graffiti, but the real-life challenges its young members faced in their urban environment.

Playgrounds are places where children can slide, swing, jump, skate, climb and do all those things which their motor control development requires. Furthermore, the social skills which children acquire on the playground develop into capabilities which they take with them into adulthood. Studies show that playgrounds are among the most important locations for young people outside the settings of home and school. This title is dedicated to the international kidscapes of today and presents the most innovative concepts and current trends of this demanding area of design. The projects lead to the knowledge that constructive collaboration on the part of architects and designers, landscape architects and municipal planners, artists and toy manufacturers is the key to the well-being of the children. Judith is suddenly all alone in the world. Her husband, Jack, has left her - why, she doesn't really know. Her two sons are in Australia, and both her mother and her best friend Naomi have recently died.
Embarking on a journey to Exmoor to meet the famous artist Robert Haussman, with an oddly assorted group of fellow-enthusiasts, Judith finds herself a prey to all sorts of irrational fears. Chief amongst them is the increasing conviction that Jack is dead. Why did he leave her? Where has he gone? And why does Robert Haussman exert such a strange influence on her?
Set in the Somerset countryside which Susan Sallis knows so well, this heartwarming novel shows how life, love and art cannot always meet happily together.

Quality of design has been an indispensable component of successful sales strategies since time immemorial, and has only gained in importance in the age of internet sales. Retail shopping must be fun and passionately celebrated as an emotional experience. Since one trend chases the next, design must display sustainability and flexibility or to precisely feature the current collection. Whether it be urban-casual, street-fashion, pret-a-porter or haute-couture, the task is to provide the perfect stage for each fashion and to address the right target group. After a short historical essay, Fashion World shows how goods are successfully displayed today. The spectrum ranges from strident designer shops to elegant boutiques, to prestigious flagship stores. Every design in this book is tailored to its task.

Considered one of the most important religious structures of the twentieth century, the Chapel of the Rosary in Vence was regarded by Matisse himself as his great masterpiece. He dedicated four years to the creation of this convent chapel on the French Riviera, and the result is one of the most remarkable and comprehensive ensemble pieces of twentieth-century art. Every element of the chapel bears the artists touch, from the vivid Mediterranean hues of the stained glass windows to the starkly powerful murals; even the vestments and altar were designed by Matisse. This beautifully illustrated volume captures the chapel in exquisite detail, allowing an unparalleled view of this iconic and sacred space. With stunning new photography that captures the dramatic effects of the changing light in the building throughout the day, this book is the first to present the experience of being within the chapel exactly as Matisse himself envisaged it, while Marie-Therese Pulvenis de Selignys authoritative and insightful text explores the extraordinary story of the chapels creation and the challenges faced by the 77-year-old artist in realising his great vision.

The delicate beauty of the cashmere shawl was first brought to Europe by the East India Companies and Napoleons campaigns. Woven in Kashmir, its fabric was so light that, according to legend, a whole shawl could be passed through a finger ring. Exquisite and expensive, by the 19th century these shawls were highly sought-after in France; enterprising French manufacturers soon saw that there was a market for more accessibly priced versions and started to create their own. This revised edition of Monique Levi-Strausss classic book on French cashmere shawls, originally published in 1987, features more than 250 illustrations of these beautiful garments, superbly photographed to showcase their splendid original designs, alongside a wealth of archive material and contemporary paintings that show them being worn by their elegant owners. This treasure trove of shawls will not only delight textile scholars and costume historians but appeal to anyone who loves beautiful accessories.

In the summer of 1937, Walter Gropius, founder of the Bauhaus and a professor at Harvards new Graduate School of Design, rented a house on Planting Island, near the base of Cape Cod. There, he and his wife, Ise, hosted a festive reunion of Bauhaus masters and students who had recently emigrated from Europe: Marcel Breuer, Herbert Bayer, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Xanti Schawinsky and others. Together they feasted, swam and planned their futures on a new continent, all sensing they were on the cusp of a momentous new phase in their lives. Yet even as they moved on, the group never lost its connection to the Cape Cod coast. Several members returned, when they had the means, to travel farther up the peninsula, rent cabins, buy land and design their ideal summer homes. Thus began a chapter in the history of modern architecture that has never been told--until now. The flow of talent onto the Outer Cape continued and, within a few years, the area was a hotbed of intellectual currents from New York, Boston, Cambridge and the countrys top schools of architecture and design. Avant-garde homes began to appear in the woods and on the dunes; by the 1970s, there were about 100 modern houses of interest here. In this story, we meet, among others, the Boston Brahmins Jack Phillips and Nathaniel Saltonstall; the self-taught architect, carpenter and painter Jack Hall; the Finn Olav Hammarstrom, who had worked for Alvar Aalto; and the prolific Charlie Zehnder, who brought the lessons of both Frank Lloyd Wright and Brutalism to the Cape. Initially, these designers had no clients; they built for themselves and their families, or for friends sympathetic to their ideals. Their homes were laboratories, places to work through ideas without spending much money. The result of this ferment is a body of work unlike any other, a regional modernism fusing the building traditions of Cape Cod fishing towns with Bauhaus concepts and postwar experimentation.
9788862083591 Ridgers, Derek 78/87 London Youth Thames & Hudson
Taken in the streets, clubs, basements and bars of London between 1978 and 1987, this new book brings together an incredible series of images from the British photographer Derek Ridgers. People dressing up and going out have always been central to Derek's work from the first days of punk through to the fetish and fringe scenes of present day. Since first picking up a camera in 1971, Ridgers has felt compelled to record the characters that made up the social scenes around him and early on his work attracted both the attention of cultural institutions, such as London's ICA and music and style publications, such as the NME and The Face. These photographs captured across the span of ten years bridge the extremities of youth-culture; from punk through to the birth of acid house. The pictures serve not only as a fascinating document of UK style and culture but as a testament to the spirit of youth, lauding the subjects and their individuality. This book offers us the chance to see the changing faces of fashion, music and culture through individuals and influential social scenes in a time of DIY attitudes.

After working on one of the worst mass killings in US history, Chief Medical Examiner Kay Scarpetta returns home to recover, but an unsettling call drives her straight back to work.
The body of a young woman has been discovered inside the sheltered gates of MIT, draped in an unusual cloth and posed in a way that is too deliberate to be the killer's first strike. A preliminary examination reveals that the body is covered in a fine dust that under ultra-violet light fluoresces blood-red, emerald-green and sapphire-blue, and physical evidence links this to another series of disturbing homicides in Washington, DC.
As she pieces together the fragments of evidence, Scarpetta discovers that the cases connect, yet also seem to conflict, drawing herself and her team deeper into the dark world of designer drugs, drone technology, organised crime, and shocking corruption at the highest level.

9781419708527 The Art of Rube Goldberg: A) Inventive B) Cartoon C) Genius Abrams
Rube Goldberg was a cartoonist, humorist, sculptor, author, engineer and inventor, and in a 72-year career he illustrated a staggering, record number of cartoons--50,000. Rube Goldberg (1883-1970) was the most famous cartoonist and humorist of his time, possibly of all time. He worked in just about every medium, starting out as a vaudeville entertainer, hosting his own radio show, his own television program, created his own animated cartoons, wrote screenplays, short stories, poems and a novel.
Known primarily for his cartoon inventions which were syndicated in daily newspapers throughout the world, Rube described his machines as a "symbol of man's capacity for exerting maximum effort to achieve minimal results," and believed most people went about things the hard way rather than using a more simple and direct path to accomplish their goals. The Art of Rube Goldberg is being created with complete access to the vast archives held at the Library of Congress, the Bancroft Library in the University of California, Berkeley and the Estate, and includes an overview of his entire career, from his very first drawing at age twelve to his later sculptures, as well as his iconic inventions and Pulitzer Prize-winning political cartoons. Also included are rare photographs, letters, memorabilia and patents, many reproduced here for the first time.
Rube Goldberg also wrote multiple autobiographical essays throughout his career and was extensively interviewed in the press and on radio and television. The Art of Rube Goldberg will include copious extracts from these primary sources so we can read about Rube in his own words. Also included are essays by noted comic historians, each with a unique take on Rube Goldberg and each writing about a different aspect of his varied career.
Brilliantly designed and packaged to capture the inventiveness of Rube Goldberg's work, The Art of Rube Goldberg is a coffee table book for die-hard fans, casual fans and fans of all ages

9780300208351 Foa Michelle Georges Seurat: The Art of Vision Yale University Press
This revelatory study of Georges Seurat (1859-1891) explores the artist's profound interest in theories of visual perception and analyzes how they influenced his celebrated seascape, urban, and suburban scenes. While Seurat is known for his innovative use of color theory to develop his pointillist technique, this book is the first to underscore the centrality of diverse ideas about vision to his seascapes, figural paintings, and drawings. Michelle Foa highlights the importance of the scientist Hermann von Helmholtz, whose work on the physiology of vision directly shaped the artist's approach. Foa contends that Seurat's body of work constitutes a far-reaching investigation into various modes of visual engagement with the world and into the different states of mind that visual experiences can produce. Foa's analysis also brings to light Seurat's sustained exploration of long-standing and new forms of illusionism in art. Beautifully illustrated with more than 140 paintings and drawings, this book serves as an essential reference on Seurat.

9780847843602 Cummings Kevin New Order Rizzoli
A definitive collection of photographs of the legendary and influential band New Order. New Order remains one of the most popular bands of the last half century. Founded in the dying years of punk and disco, and combining elements of post-punk, new wave, and electronic dance music, New Order was responsible for some of the biggest hits of the era and is one of few bands to have achieved mainstream success while retaining cult status. Having been the most trusted photographer of Joy Division in the 1970s, Kevin Cummins was uniquely placed to document the rise and fall of New Order, from their formation in 1980 to their split in 1993. From underground beginnings as the flagship group of Factory Records in Manchester to grandstand tours around Europe and America, Cummins captured the band in every light, from the intimacy of the studio to the frenetic energy of live performance. Collected here for the first time are more than a hundred photographs reflecting over a decade of New Order. Prefaced by a selection of rarely seen ephemera, conversations with the band members, and an introduction from Douglas Coupland, this is a stunning celebration of a band whose influence on music and fashion is still palpable today.

9780878468225 Michie, Thomas European Decorative Arts Thames & Hudson
The world-renowned collection of European decorative arts from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston is full of sumptuous surprises. Some delicate and some divine, the objects range from an opulent automaton to a richly wrought crozier, and vary in scale from a salt cellar in the form of a crustacean to the fine wood panelling of an entire dining room. Their dates of manufacture span more than a thousand years the earliest made shortly after the fall of the Roman Empire and the most recent in the computer age. They reach across space as well as time, bearing evidence not only of cultural exchange among European countries, such as England and France, but also of the revival of ancient motifs and of contemporary trade with India and China. Presented here with an introduction to the topic and individual texts on each piece, these diverse works are organized chronologically and by stylistic movements to highlight the hidden histories of these works.

9788857224282 Quinto, Enrico Italian Glamour Thames & Hudson
The fashion archive of Enrico Quinto and Paolo Tinarelli has been painstakingly assembled over the last twenty years and traces the international evolution of costume from the mid-19th century to the present day. This quintessential volume on Italian Style narrates the development of fashion through around three hundred dresses, chronologically ordered and selected from an international collection of over six thousand pieces, enriched by commentary by historians, journalists and fashion designers, but also by photography, film and personal testimony: a concrete resource for historians of costume, students and passionates. The idea of departing from a purely chronological sequence springs from a desire to demonstrate the vitality and ongoing relevance of historical pieces through their juxtaposition with contemporary examples. Most of the displayed dresses were documented by photographers when they first appeared worn by famous actresses, models and jet set personalities of the time: from the Duchess of Windsor to Queen Paola of Belgium, from Princess Grace of Monaco to Ava Gardner, Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren, Audrey Hepburn, Veruschka, Marisa Berenson, Grace Jones amongst many others.

As synthetic materials, mutant and hybrid concoctions attain prominence in our daily lives - in our handheld devices, cooking utensils, vehicles, even things as simple as our shopping bags - the design and construction industries have instead reembraced the familiar, the conventional - wood, which has regained prominence through innovations in engineering and construction methodologies. Technology is now commonly used and often (though not always) affordably used - to cut, perforate, assemble, erect, and even fabricate materials in a manner not previously possible. Wood is one such material, and Timber in the City documents both the imaginings of those in the nascence of their education and practice and the executed work of design professionals at the leading edge of architecture. These designers, regardless of the duration of their immersion in the field, have imaginatively rethought the means by which we build and the methods by which we define space merely through differing deployments of a familiar building material.

This first book by famous textile artist Mister Finch is a gorgeous collection of the artist's fantastical, one-of-a-kind creatures. Drawing inspiration from the natural world, as well as British folklore, Finch mingles fairytales and reality to create a magical world all his own. Peek inside Finch's Yorkshire studio, a place brimming with buttons and scraps of fabric, where spindly-legged spiders keep watch over mischievous hares and carpet-winged moths perch majestically atop bookshelves. Finch's critters have been called 'wonderfully peculiar and completely charming', 'a joy for the eye and the soul'. Many of these pieces were born of treasures lost and forgotten: velvet curtains from an old hotel, a threadbare wedding dress and a vintage apron become birds and beasts, looking for new owners and adventures. The pages of this book are strewn with creatures who prove that anything is possible in the

9780500093962 van Beneden, Ben Rubens in Private Thames & Hudson
Michelangelo regarded portraiture as a trivial genre, and Peter Paul Rubens did not instantly develop a preference for it either. Yet Rubens succeeded, as none other, in endowing his portraits with an almost palpable sense of immediacy, and was to become one of the greatest portraitists of all time. His most beautiful and surprising portraits are those of his immediate family. These intimate pictures were not intended for public display and are therefore considerably freer and more experimental than the likenesses he painted of influential patrons. Nothing about these private images seems idealized. They are uncommonly honest and veracious and at the same time expressive of great tenderness. While the hundreds of letters he wrote reveal very little about his emotional life, Rubens s portraits of family members testify in a special way to the affection he felt for his first and second wives, his brother and his children.

'The V&A is an invaluable resource for costume designers. I was fortunate to be able to look at some of the clothes in the Heather Firbank collection when I was researching for the first series of Downton Abbey - these were fine examples and particularly relevant.' Susannah Buxton, EMMY award-winning costume designer for Downton Abbey (Series 1 & 2) Over 80 years ago, Heather Firbank packed away her extensive collection of fine clothes, bought from London's very best dressmakers and tailors. These treasures lay undiscovered for the next 30 years, until after her death, they were given to the V&A, laying the foundations for the Museum's world-famous collection. Firbank was an enthusiastic shopper and bought her clothes from the world's leading couture houses, including Lucile, Redfern and Mascotte, as well as private dressmakers and department stores. Her collection forms an invaluable record of fashionable Edwardian taste over a period of some 15 years. Beautifully illustrated with new photography of finely crafted evening gowns, tailored suits and glamorous hats, the book also features contemporary photographs and pages from Heather's own albums of fashion cuttings. It vividly maps out the London couture scene of Edwardian Britain, and charts changes in fashion through the tumultuous first decades of the twentieth century. Through the story of Heather's own life, both joyous and troubled, this book celebrates the central role of clothing in creating a single woman's identity.

9780297608127 Beatles Lyrics Orion Publishers
Never before has anyone attempted to track down and publish the original versions of the classic songs, many of which have never yet been published. These documents have ended up in the hands of collectors and friends of the Beatles, scattered across the world at museums and universities.
Hunter Davies knew and worked with the Beatles during their heyday, and wrote their first and only authorized biography. In this collection, he has tracked down and reproduced over 100 original handwritten manuscripts of their songs, reproduced here - and, in almost every case, for the very first time.
For the Beatles, writing songs was a process that could happen anytime and anywhere - songs might begin as a scribble on the back of an envelope, a napkin or on hotel stationery. From them we gain a unique insight into the remarkable creative process of the greatest songwriters of all time; what they were thinking, how they changed their minds, and then came up with the words which are now known the world over - complete with all the scribbles and crossings out.
Each song is given its context: what the Beatles were doing at the time, how and when they came to write and record it, how the original version differs from the final one. Almost every Beatles song has a great story behind it, whether it is 'Yesterday', 'Eleanor Rigby' or 'Yellow Submarine'.
Many books have appeared about the Beatles, but in the end what really matters - and will always matter most - is their music. Their music comes out of their lives, just as their lives and emotions are reflected in their music. The Beatles Lyrics is the definitive story of their lives, as uniquely told through their music.

Founded in 1928 as a "living diary" by the great Milanese architect and designer Gio Ponti, domus has been hailed as the world's most influential architecture and design journal. With both style and rigor, it has offered consistent coverage of major themes and stylistic movements in product, structure, interior, and industrial design. In this fresh reprint of all 1960s issues, the magazine documents the daring, practical, and beautiful projects of a decade of futuristic thrill and booming pop culture. Synthetics and plastics hit the stage, leading to radical new design, while conventional notions of elegance give way to fresh, exploratory forms. For work to be featured in the magazine it had to offer function, spatial clarity, intellectual persuasion, relevant originality, and / or grace. Those projects and practitioners that made the grade include the Anti and Radical Design movements, Ray and Charles Eames, Gae Aulenti, Kenzo Tange, Verner Panton, Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, Ettore Sottsass, Carlo Scarpa, Angelo Mangiarotti, James Stirling, and Eero Saarinen.

9783777424293 Kopplin, Monika Russian Lacquer Thames & Hudson
Monika Kopplin highlights the extraordinary variety of decorative techniques as well as the many stylistic features. The history and art history of Russia are reflected in the small format of the lacquer miniatures, painting a lively picture of the various eras. A comprehensive index of seals expands the catalogue into a reference book.
Russian lacquer art can be traced back to Peter the Great, who had come to know this flourishing art and craft during his study trips in Western Europe. The first important work in this genre in the tsar's empire was completed in 1722 in the form of the Lacquer Study in his palace of Monplaisir. A second significant event followed when the Korobov workshop, which was modelled on the Braunschweig-based Stobwasser workshop, was established in 1793 near Moscow.
It is better known by the name of a later owner, Lukutin. A technical and artistic alignment with the German model was followed by an increasingly independent Russian development from the 1820s onwards. At first this found expression in specific decorative techniques, and later also in specifically Russian motifs.
9781476763804 Dionne E. J. Why the Right Went Wrong: Conservatism--From Goldwater to the Tea Party and Beyond Simon & Schuster
From the author of "Why Americans Hate Politics," the "New York Times" bestselling and notably fair-minded ("The New York Times Book Review"), story of the GOP s fracturing from the 1964 Goldwater takeover to the Trump spectacle.
"Why the Right Went Wrong" offers an up to the moment ("The Christian Science Monitor") historical view of the right since the 1960s. Its core contention is that American conservatism and the Republican Party took a wrong turn when they adopted Barry Goldwater s worldview during and after the 1964 campaign. The radicalism of today s conservatism is not the product of the Tea Party, "Washington Post" columnist E.J. Dionne writes. The Tea Partiers are the true heirs to Goldwater ideology. The purity movement did more than drive moderates out of the Republican Party it beat back alternative definitions of conservatism.
Since 1968, no conservative administration not Nixon not Reagan not two Bushes could live up to the rhetoric rooted in the Goldwater movement that began to reshape American politics fifty years ago. The collapse of the Nixon presidency led to the rise of Ronald Reagan, the defeat of George H.W. Bush, to Newt Gingrich s revolution. Bush initially undertook a partial modernization, preaching compassionate conservatism and a Fourth Way to Clinton s Third Way. Conservatives quickly defined him as an advocate of big government and not conservative enough on spending, immigration, education, and Medicare. A return to the true faith was the only prescription on order. The result was the Tea Party, which Dionne says, was as much a reaction to Bush as to Obama.
The state of the Republican party, controlled by the strictest base, is diminished, Dionne writes. It has become white and older in a country that is no longer that. It needs to come back to life for its own health and that of the country s, and in "Why the Right Went Wrong," Dionne expertly delineates where we are and how we got there ("Chicago Tribune") and how to return."

This stirring book of photographs introduces the many wolves that have been given sanctuary at Wolf Haven International near Mount Rainer in southeast Washington State. Annie Marie Musselman was given the rare opportunity to photograph the wolves at the Wolf Haven sanctuary near Mount Rainier. Some wolves here were injured and captured from the wild, while others were (illegally) raised in confinement. Some of the pups will be raised with the intention of releasing them into the wild. Human contact is very limited, so the images captured by Musselman express a wild spirit that is very different from anything seen in domesticated animals. Brenda Peterson s text puts the stories of these wolves, and of wolves in North America, into context as she describes their behavior patterns and social structure. "Wolf Haven" uncovers new truths about wolves and the ways humans are finding to coexist with these wild animals."

9783836535045 Wolf Norbert Kirchner (Basic Art) Taschen
Expressionist pioneer Ernst Ludwig Kirchner heralded a new perspective in 20th-century painting
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880 1938) is regarded as one of the key figures in 20th-century European art. A Modernist to his bones, he sent seismic waves through the art world with his hard-edged, intensely colored paintings and disseminated his ideas through Die Brucke art movement and the MUIM-Institut school of modernist painting, both of which he cofounded.
Kirchner s work reconciled past and present through an Expressionist prism, reflecting the latest avant-garde ideas in art, while exploring traditional academic approaches and subjects. His works tackled social, moral, and emotional questions with a fierce intensity. Distorted perspectives, rough lines, and unusual colors were mainstays of his practice, as well as a recurring interest in capturing the human form, whether in frenetic city vistas such as Berlin Street Scene (1913) or in his famously decadent studio.
In this introductory book, we explore the stretch of Kirchner s career through Germany and Switzerland, including his founding of Die Brucke, and his inclusion in the Nazis infamous degenerate art exhibition in 1937. |9781250082961 Golembesky Michael Dagger 22: U.S. Marine Corps Special Operations in Bala Murghab, Afghanistan Holtzbrink(MPS)/MPS |
"Level Zero Heroes," Michael Golembesky's bestselling account of Marine Special Operations Team 8222 in Bala Murghab, Afghanistan, was just the beginning for these now battle-hardened special operations warriors.
The unforgiving Afghan winter has settled upon the 22 men of Marine Special Operations Team 8222, callsign Dagger 22, in the remote and hostile river valley of Bala Murghab, Afghanistan. The Taliban fighters in the region would have liked nothing more than to once again go dormant and rest until the new spring fighting season began. No chance of that this winter would be different.
Along with Afghan and International Security Forces (NATO), the Marines of Dagger 22 continued their fight throughout the harsh winter to shape the battlefield before the Afghan ground began to thaw. From one firefight to the next, the noose began to tighten around the village of Daneh Pasab and the Taliban command cell operating there. On April 6, 2010, a ground force consisting of U.S. Army Special Forces, Afghan Commandos and Marine Corps special operations conducted a night assault to destroy the heavily entrenched Taliban force, breaking their grip on the valley and stopping the spring offensive before it even began.
But nothing in Bala Murghab comes easily as combat operations wear on the operators of Dagger 22 as they lean on each other once again in order to complete their mission in one of the most brutal environments on earth."
9783662498866 Langtangen Hans Petter A Primer on Scientific Programming with Python Springer
The book serves as a first introduction to computer programming of scientific applications, using the high-level Python language. The exposition is example and problem-oriented, where the applications are taken from mathematics, numerical calculus, statistics, physics, biology and finance. The book teaches 'Matlab-style' and procedural programming as well as object-oriented programming. High school mathematics is a required background and it is advantageous to study classical and numerical one-variable calculus in parallel with reading this book. Besides learning how to program computers, the reader will also learn how to solve mathematical problems, arising in various branches of science and engineering, with the aid of numerical methods and programming. By blending programming, mathematics and scientific applications, the book lays a solid foundation for practicing computational science. From the reviews: Langtangen … does an excellent job of introducing programming as a set of skills in problem solving. He guides the reader into thinking properly about producing program logic and data structures for modeling real-world problems using objects and functions and embracing the object-oriented paradigm. … Summing Up: Highly recommended. F. H. Wild III, Choice, Vol. 47 (8), April 2010Those of us who have learned scientific programming in Python ‘on the streets’ could be a little jealous of students who have the opportunity to take a course out of Langtangen’s Primer.” John D. Cook, The Mathematical Association of America, September 2011This book goes through Python in particular, and programming in general, via tasks that scientists will likely perform. It contains valuable information for students new to scientific computing and would be the perfect bridge between an introduction to programming and an advanced course on numerical methods or computational science.Alex Small, IEEE, CiSE Vol. 14 (2), March?/April 2012 “This fourth edition is awonderful, inclusive textbook that covers pretty much everything one needs toknow to go from zero to fairly sophisticated scientific programming in Python…”Joan Horvath, Computing Reviews, March2015

9780500094037 Baatsch, Henri-Alexis Hokusai Thames & Hudson
A beautifully illustrated introduction to this master artist, who combined great technical prowess with remarkable imagination and a passion for vivid detail
Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) was the most prolific and diverse artist of Japan’s Edo period, with a body of work reputed to include more than 30,000 drawings, paintings and prints.
In an era when Japan had isolated itself from the outside world, its urban centres enjoyed increasing wealth and stability, leading to a flourishing culture of art and pleasure-seeking. Woodblock prints of the genre known as ukiyo-e – ‘images of the floating world’ – became defining images of the age, and from humble beginnings in a working-class district of Tokyo, Hokusai rose to become a master of this style of printmaking.
Driven and endlessly inventive, he used many names over the course of his long career, but perhaps the most telling was Gakyojin – ‘the madman of art’. His works range from portraits of popular actors and courtesans to landscapes and seascapes, including his celebrated Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, and from cleverly observed scenes of everyday life to the erotic prints known as shunga.
While his prints had a huge influence on the course of Western art, it is equally true that he himself was influenced by European painting, embracing techniques such as perspective and adapting them to suit Japanese tastes.

Wood has unique qualities, yet is undervalued or ignored in histories of architecture. However, leading designers around the world are increasingly drawn to it to satisfy social and environmental needs. Will Pryce, the most admired architectural photographer in Britain, has travelled the world seeking both famous and obscure buildings in wood. Intensely dramatic but not over-dramatized, technically flawless, but not merely documentary, his photographs convey all the excitement of encountering these amazing structures first hand. In the substantial text he shows how the wooden heritage of Japan grew from its Buddhist history; how Russia’s carpenters determined its iconic domes; how Norway’s stave churches contain clues to her pagan past; how Turkic tribes brought the yali from Asia; how the settlers of New England would use a provincial English tradition on the new continent; and how, today, sophisticated architects such as Peter Zumthor and Renzo Piano are inventing an eloquent new wooden architecture.

At the beginning of a new century, Alma Whittaker is born into a perfect Philadelphia winter. Her father, Henry Whittaker, is a bold and charismatic botanical explorer whose vast fortune belies his lowly beginnings as a vagrant in Sir Joseph Banks's Kew Gardens and as a deck hand on Captain Cook's HMS Resolution. Alma's mother, a strict woman from an esteemed Dutch family, has a knowledge of botany equal to any man's.
It is not long before Alma, an independent girl with a thirst for knowledge, comes into her own within the world of plants and science. But as her careful studies of moss take her deeper into the mysteries of evolution, the man she comes to love draws her in the opposite direction.
The Signature of All Things is a big novel, about a big century. It soars across the globe from London, to Peru, to Philadelphia, to Tahiti, to Amsterdam. Peopled with extraordinary characters - missionaries, abolitionists, adventurers, astronomers, sea captains, geniuses and the quite mad -above all it has an unforgettable heroine in Alma Whittaker, a woman of the Enlightened Age who stands defiantly on the cusp of the modern.

Following the success of Style Book: Fashionable Inspirations , this new volume offers a fresh take on the iconic patterns and prints that are renewed and recycled year after year, from the runways to street wear. Fashion editor Elizabeth Walker draws on eclectic influences from around the world: embroidered kimonos from Japan, batiks from Indonesia, paisley from India and France, animal prints, bold op-art geometrics in black and white, bright kangas from Kenya, Hawaiian print hibiscus, or bold splashes of color combining Schiaparelli pink with tangerine and turquoise. From Grace Jones in a zebra print jumpsuit to a flappers scalloped swimsuit, or from Marc Jacobs in a Mickey Mouse t-shirt to Nicolas Cage in a snakeskin jacket, you can take your cue to liven up the gray workday commute in a jewel-toned ikat print or a jaunty African tribal fabric. The striped mariners pullover that looked great on Picasso is still in style, and hounds-tooth checkered trousers will turn heads and add bounce to your stride. The images selected herefeaturing both celebrities and more proletariat fashionistas spotlight the striking prints and patterns that add panache to any look.

9780789210593 John Spike Caravaggio + CD Abbeville Press
Every extant work by Caravaggio is reproduced in color in this lavish newly updated volume, the long-awaited result of more than 20 years of research by a leading authority on the artist. In an engaging and informed text, John T. Spike explores in detail Caravaggio's scandalous life and provocative work. Placing Caravaggio within the broad panorama of society and ideas at the turn of the 17th century, the author sets a richly detailed stage for an artist who has been called "the first modern painter." Caravaggio (1571-1610) reflected in his canvases his own desires and spiritual crises to an extent no one ever had imagined possible, and he shocked his contemporaries by portraying the saints and virgins of Christianity with the faces and bodies of his companions and lovers in Rome's demimonde. Accompanying the book is a critical catalog on CD-ROM in which all of Caravaggio's extant paintings, as well as lost and rejected works, are thoroughly described. Each entry specifies the work's medium, dimensions, location, and provenance, and provides an annotated bibliography of sources. Most of the entries conclude with a brief technical analysis. Much of this scientific data, of prime importance for attribution and dating, has not previously been published. With its fresh insights, as well as judicious readings of the documents and the physical evidence of the paintings themselves, Caravaggio is the most thorough study on the artist to date, and it will no doubt remain a definitive monograph for many years to come. This revised edition includes a new preface and updated bibliography.

9780847834174 Krakoff Reed Mattia Bonetti. Reed Krakoff Rizzoli USA
The first comprehensive monograph on the limited-edition creations by Mattia Bonetti, a trailblazer bridging the gap between art and design. Highly beloved and collected by forward-looking tastemakers—Christian Lacroix, Philip Johnson, David Whitney, and Reed Krakoff, among others—Mattia Bonetti’s seductive designs have been accessible only to the privileged few, until now. Quirky, poetic, colorful, and exquisitely crafted, Bonetti’s works hover between function and quixotic form, evocative of history but not tied to any school of art or design. This volume collects Bonetti’s limited-edition furniture designs throughout his thirty-year career, through photography by Krakoff in residential interiors, galleries, and Bonetti’s workshop; revealing color sketches; and dramatic black-and-white portraits of Bonetti and his team of craftsmen. Comprehensive in scope, Mattia Bonetti shows for the first time the whimsical world of this highly acclaimed Swiss-born, Paris-based designer. Essays by Gloria von Thurn und Taxis, Marie-Laure Jousset, and Jacques Grange, as well as a provocative conversation with Adrian Dannatt, further illuminate Bonetti’s playful synthesis of opposites and insightful use of naturalism and modernism across art and design.

Building a green home or redesigning an existing home to be green is more than energy efficiency and preservation of natural resources. It is about integrating cost-effective design and materials to better the well being of inhabitants. Explore the many ways architects have achieved sustainability, incorporating commonsense strategies of solar orientation, natural ventilation, recycling of household water, and making use of cutting-edge materials and building technologies such as earth sheltering, thermal mass, super insulation, geothermal heating and cooling, and photovoltaic electrical generation all without compromising their aesthetic goals. Here are more than 50 green homes in North America, shown in 400 color photographs. Many have won major awards; others have been the subject of media attention and tours. This book will help the homeowner, builder, and architect design homes that are more energy efficient, reduce consumption and emissions, and incorporate sustainable materials. The residences presented here demonstrate the range of potential solutions and ideas for building a sustainable house.

9780252077906 Badley Linda Lars von Trier Íåèçâåñòíî
Scandinavia's foremost living auteur and the catalyst of the Dogme95 movement, Lars von Trier is arguably world cinema's most confrontational and polarizing figure. Willfully devastating audiences, he takes risks few filmmakers would conceive, mounting projects that somehow transcend the grand follies they narrowly miss becoming. Challenging conventional limitations and imposing his own rules, he restlessly reinvents the film language. The Danish director has therefore cultivated an insistently transnational cinema, taking inspiration from sources that range from the European avant-garde to American genre films. This volume provides a stimulating overview of Trier's career while focusing on the more recent work, including his controversial Gold Heart Trilogy ("Breaking the Waves, The Idiots, " and "Dancer in the Dark"), the as-yet unfinished USA Trilogy ("Dogville" and "Manderlay"), and individual projects such as the comedy "The Boss of It All" and the incendiary horror psychodrama "Antichrist." Closely analyzing the films and their contexts, Linda Badley draws on a range of cultural references and critical approaches, including genre, gender, and cultural studies, performance theory, and trauma culture. Two revealing interviews that Trier granted during crucial stages of "Antichrist"'s development are also included.
